Frequently Asked Questions: 17 Inch Laptop
What are the alternatives to a 17 inch laptop?
Laptops are available in various formats. The most popular are 13 and 15 inches. But there are also various laptops with a screen size of only 11 inches.
13 and 15 inch notebooks usually have a big weight advantage over 17 inch laptops. They are therefore a lot more practical to transport. A 17 inch screen diagonal, on the other hand, is better for watching films and offers a better overview when editing images.
Microsoft offers some of its laptops in an unusual format. The Surface Book’s screen is in 3: 2 format. This is especially good for image processing as it is pretty close to the ratio of the DIN format.
Who should use a 17 inch laptop?
However, there are individual situations in which you can be happy to see the larger screen. Especially when it comes to video editing, you are often grateful for the additional space because a lot of windows have to be open next to each other. The same goes for image editing and other graphic work.
17 inch notebooks can also be advantageous for people with below-average visibility. The content can be displayed in a larger format without having to scroll a lot.
A 17 inch laptop is not for everyone. For most users, a 15 inch screen diagonal is sufficient.
If you have high demands on the loudspeakers of your laptop, you should also look at laptops with 17 inch screens. Since the entire laptop is larger than, for example, a 13 inch laptop, there is more space to accommodate the speakers. This usually results in a noticeably higher sound quality and volume than smaller laptops.
With 13 and 15 inch laptops, the speakers are usually hidden on the underside or in the joint. With 17 inch notebooks, however, there is often space to place the speakers next to the keyboard, which in turn ensures better sound.
Types of 17 Inch Laptops
When buying a 17 inch notebook, you have to choose between various types. The following categories can be distinguished:
- Gaming laptop
- Business laptop
- Multimedia laptop
The decision mainly depends on what you want your notebook for. Each category basically offers laptops in all price ranges.
17 Inch Gaming Laptops: Advantages & Disadvantages
The 17 inch models are particularly popular with gaming notebooks. The large screen with mostly high resolution helps not to get tired even with long games. The screens each have a very high refresh rate in order to guarantee fun without slowing down images. Most screens are matt, also to make long playing more pleasant. However, this matte screen does not allow particularly precise color reproduction. You should know that if you only want to use the laptop for image processing.
Notebooks in this category are characterized by a particularly good graphics card. Usually a model from the well-known manufacturer Nvidia is used. They usually have large RAM and a modern, fast processor.
- Good screen
- Fast processor
- Large RAM
- Often difficult
- More expensive
These notebooks have connections that are otherwise, if at all, only found on business notebooks. An HDMI connection is standard. Ethernet connections and all types of USB connections are often still available. These have long been banned from other laptops.
The speakers are generally good, although a headset is usually used with them. But if you misplace the headset, gaming is still fun.
The design of the gaming notebooks is very striking. Typical features are keyboards with RGB lighting and an angular industrial design. Most are in matte black, some are also available in color.
All of these technical qualities are of course not free. So if you want a good gaming laptop you have to dig deep into your pocket. Of course, if you make some compromises, you can also find a laptop for the smaller wallet. A strong back is also recommended if you want to be on the road a lot with the laptop. The cheaper gaming notebooks in particular often weigh more than 2kg.
17 Inch Business Laptops: Advantages & Disadvantages
If you want a notebook for work, you will find it in this category. Here, high demands are made on the security of the laptop, whereby the performance often plays less of a role.
These laptops are more intended for simpler tasks such as writing text or the like. Many of them have an excellent webcam built in to make video conferencing more convenient. The processor, the RAM and the graphics card are often secondary.
Most laptops in this category offer a wide range of security measures. Various systems are available for unlocking. From a simple password to an authentication card to a palm scan, everything is available. Different mechanisms are often used simultaneously. For example, you have to insert the correct card and enter the correct password in order to log in.
- Very convenient
- Available cheaply
- Bad sound quality
- Often not suitable for demanding tasks
Not much emphasis is placed on the speakers. Good speakers need space, and these laptops should be as practical as possible.
The design of business laptops varies widely. In general, form follows function. So the design is secondary. It is important that there is space for all the required connections and that handling is practical. Therefore, there are often more connections available than would be optimal for the design. These are very practical if you have to connect the laptop to a projector for a presentation or something similar.
Business notebooks are available in all price ranges. The prices vary greatly depending on the security requirements and technical specifications. The notebooks are often very light because you have to travel a lot with them and work on the go.
17 Inch Multimedia Laptops: Advantages & Disadvantages
Those who like to work creatively should deal with this category further. They often meet the very specific requirements of creative work. As a result, they are also very suitable for watching movies.
In order to be able to design reliably visually, a screen with good resolution and precise color representation is required. So you can be sure that the pictures will look just as great when printed out as on the screen.
Graphic work places high demands on the performance of the notebook. A graphics card with a large dedicated graphics memory becomes more important the longer. A fast processor is at least as important. Multimedia notebooks, like gaming notebooks, often have Nvidia graphics cards and i7 or at least i5 processors.
- Versatile in use
- High computing power
- Great design
- Rather expensive
- Often more power than necessary
The required RAM depends very much on the way you work. You can almost always choose this yourself. They can be configured in such a way that working in the 3D area is also no problem.
The speakers are usually above average because video editing also includes sound design and external speakers are not always available.
These notebooks usually have very few connections. Function follows form is the motto here. The laptops are intended for people who create digital work themselves. These customers often have high demands on design and are prepared to compromise on practicality, which the providers have recognized and are implementing accordingly.
Multimedia notebooks are also available in various price ranges. But they tend to settle in the upper classes because they have to be very well equipped technically.
17 Inch Laptops: Purchase Criteria
In the following we will show you which aspects you can use to decide between the multitude of 17 inch laptops. Criteria with which you can distinguish 17 inch notebooks are:
- Operating System
- Graphics Performance
In the following paragraphs we will explain to you what is important for the individual criteria.
Although there are still a few competitors like Linux, there is no getting around Windows and IOS. However, various companies such as Huawei are developing their own operating systems not only for cell phones, but also for laptops and PCs.
Whether you buy a laptop with IOS or Windows is above all personal preference. It is even easily possible to have both systems installed on the same laptop and to switch between the two depending on the use.
When it comes to the operating system, Windows and IOS set the tone.
In general, IOS can be said to be a little more user-friendly. It’s easier to use and tends to be clearer. For the sake of simplicity, however, certain functions are also lost. Windows allows the user to personalize the computer more, but it is also a bit more complicated. Both can be learned very quickly.
With a few exceptions, there are now versions of all programs for both Windows and Mac.
With regard to storage space, a distinction must first be made between SSD (Solid State Drive), HDD (Hard Disk Drive) and hybrid hard drives.
All older and some newer notebooks are equipped with HDD. The disc from which the information is read is still turning. Hard drives of this type are relatively slow and very prone to data loss if your laptop should be dropped or otherwise hit. This is particularly important with gaming notebooks;).
Newer notebooks are usually already equipped with an SSD. Nothing moves in an SSD anymore. Hence the name Solid State. As a result, they are much more stable and faster in data processing than HDDs.
SSD hard drives are still quite expensive. Many manufacturers therefore opt for a hybrid solution. A small SSD is installed and connected to a larger HDD. Now the computer automatically stores the data that you often need on the SSD so that you have them quickly available at any time.
On the other hand, it places data that you need less often on the HDD and only fetches it from there when you open the file. As a user, you don’t notice anything and it can save you a lot of costs compared to a large SSD.
The second criterion is the storage space. The files are getting bigger and bigger and more and more space is needed. But what is the right place to keep them?
That also depends a lot on what you need the laptop for. Most of the time, you need less storage space than you think. The longer the majority of the files are stored in the cloud and do not need any more space on your own hard drive.
If you want to have large amounts of data on your computer, we suggest an external hard drive, as this is usually much cheaper than increasing the storage space of the laptop accordingly. For the average user, 256 gigabytes are enough by far.
The main memory is responsible for storing data that you need in the running programs. It is also called RAM (Random Access Memory) and is directly connected to the processor.
How much RAM you need depends mainly on how and which many programs you want to run at the same time. Programs like Word or PowerPoint require very little memory. Photoshop, InDesign or Lightroom need a lot more.
Programs like PremierePro, Cinema 4D or all CAD programs need a good amount of RAM. It also depends on the other components how much RAM is actually required. For example, if you have a graphics card with a lot of dedicated memory, it can do a good part of the work and you need less regular memory.
RAM is usually available in 4, 8, 16, 32 or 64 gigabytes. If you want to do more with your laptop than just write texts and send emails, we advise you to pack at least 8 GB of RAM in your notebook. Anyone who wants to cut films or even create 3D graphics and special effects needs at least 16, if not 32 Gb RAM.
A computer’s graphics performance depends on its graphics card. These are different in speed and have different sized dedicated memory.
Although modern notebooks are dustproof, you should clean them on the outside every now and then.
The dedicated main memory has the same task as the normal main memory, it is simply used primarily for graphic work such as image processing. For such work it is almost more important than normal working memory. So if you do a lot of graphic work, you should get a laptop with a good graphics card.
The graphics card is also crucial in gaming because it is responsible for converting the content of the game into images. In order to guarantee a smooth game, you have to invest in a good graphics card.
There are three different criteria here. The first is the resolution of the screen. The second is the color representation. The second is whether the notebook should have a touchscreen or not.
The resolution is important for every user. A high resolution is more comfortable for long reading and working. If you want to edit videos, it also makes sense if your screen can at least display the quality in which you want to edit the video.
If your GoPro can film in 4K and you want to use that too, it makes sense that your 17 inch laptop has a 4K screen. If you don’t need that, something between HD and 4K is by far enough. However, less than HD quality is not recommended if you want to work with it for longer.
The screen is one of the most important criteria when buying a laptop.
A precise color representation is only important for very specific customers. If you want to edit images or even create proof files, you should look around for a laptop with good color representation.
The clearest and most precise colors are achieved with an OLED screen. However, these are only available in very few laptops and unfortunately not yet in 17 inches. Perhaps it would be worthwhile for you to wait until the first laptop that is equipped with it is on the market.
Touchscreen notebooks are becoming increasingly popular. However, only very few are available with a touchscreen in the 17 inch format. So if you want a convertible you should look around at the 13 and 15 inch laptops. In general, laptops with touch screens are particularly suitable for those who work creatively and for students.
Facts about 17 Inch Laptop
How do I clean my 17 inch laptop?
An expensive device like a notebook also requires a little maintenance. The best way to do this is as follows.
- Clean the screen. Most of the time, this is possible with the microfiber cloth provided. If that is not enough, wet cleaning wipes are ideal. Never use a cleaning sponge or the like! This could scratch the screen. And keep your fingers off wet rags as otherwise water could penetrate the housing.
- Clean the keyboard. This is very important because certain keyboard models in particular can break if you don’t clean them. You can also wipe the keyboard with a damp cloth. But make sure that you have expressed it well beforehand. A Post-It is ideal for cleaning between the keys. Just run the sticky strip through between the keys, you’ll be amazed at how much dust you’ll find.
- Cleaning the case is less important and less delicate. A dirty case just doesn’t look so good. It would be a shame if your great notebook couldn’t be seen in its full glory. You can clean the housing well with a slightly damp cloth.
Can I expand the RAM of my 17 inch laptop?
If you are not familiar with it, especially with new laptops, it is not advisable to expand the RAM yourself. First, you will lose your guarantee with all manufacturers. Second, most manufacturers glue the RAM stick into its slot.
As a result, you hardly ever take them away yourself. Find out before you buy whether it is even possible to expand the RAM later. Even professionals can usually not help with newer laptops. Then it is worth investing a little more from the beginning, otherwise you might get angry later.
How do I create a backup of my 17 inch laptop?
Creating a backup is always recommended. With most laptops, it’s very easy.
If you are using IOS, Time Machine will automatically make a backup when you attach your external hard drive. The first time you have to make a few settings, after that it should work automatically.
A backup program is also available if you have a Windows laptop. You can find it under “Control Panel” and then “Backing Up Your Computer”.
What do I have to pay attention to when setting up my 17 inch laptop?
The manufacturer generally guides you very well through the process of setting up. You should just make sure that you always have enough battery. We would recommend charging the laptop either before or while you set it up. If you then follow the manufacturer’s instructions, nothing can go wrong.
