  • Finding a monitor in the right size is essential for pleasant work. 21 inch monitors are particularly suitable for workplaces with limited space.
  • A distinction is usually made between IPS, TN and VA panels, each of which has its right to exist. An IPS panel is suitable for image and video editing. A TN panel is sufficient for pure office work. For gaming, it depends on what is being played.
  • When purchasing a monitor, special attention must be paid to the connections, whereby at least one DVI, HDMI or DisplayPort connection should be available.

FAQ’s: 21 Inch Monitors

Should You Get A 21 Inch Or A 24 Inch Monitor?

On the one hand, it is simply more pleasant to work with small screens with small work surfaces – especially with narrow tables.

On the other hand, monitors in this format are usually more cost-effective than monitors with a larger diagonal, which is particularly profitable when purchasing multiple monitors for the purpose of a dual-monitor or even multi-monitor setup.

As a guideline for the seat distance from the monitor, 1.2 times the diagonal of the monitor apply.

With a 21 inch monitor, this means a distance of around 65.5 cm. At 24 inches it is 73 cm.

At first glance this may not sound like much, but at the latest when you are working with the same seat spacing, you will be able to quickly notice the difference.

What Are The Differences Among 21 Inch Monitors?

Basically, 21 inch monitors can be classified into two categories.

On the one hand 21 inch monitors, which mostly have a native resolution of 1680 × 1050, i.e. an aspect ratio of 16:10.

On the other hand, 21.5 inch monitors, which usually have a native resolution of 1920 × 1080 and an aspect ratio of 16:9.

When considering a purchase, you should definitely opt for a monitor with a resolution of at least 1920 × 1080.

A resolution of 1680 × 1050 does not offer more screen space either horizontally or vertically.

In addition, 1920 × 1080 is the standard definition for watching movies. This is because most televisions use this resolution and films are optimized for it.

When watching movies, for example, at 16:10 you would have black bars above and below.

Is A 21 Inch Monitor Suitable For Office Work, Image/Video Editing & Gaming?

As already noted, 21 inch monitors are ideal for the workplace. Especially if you are subject to a spatial restriction.

Even when working with common software such as Word and Excel, a 21-inch monitor with a resolution of 1920 × 1080 is completely sufficient.

For image and video editing, 21 inch monitors are sufficient for the occasional user of software such as Photoshop or Adobe Premiere.

For professional use, however, it is worth considering switching to larger monitors with higher resolutions.

The panel technology and the color space should also be taken into account here.

In the gaming sector, the 1920 × 1080 resolution still dominates. Mostly with monitor sizes from 22 to 24 inches.

Which Connections Do I Need For A 21 Inch Monitor?

It all depends on which connections your graphics card supports.

The best way to check this is to search the internet for the exact name of your card.

Modern graphics cards usually support DVI, HDMI and DisplayPort connections, but no longer VGA.

Older graphics cards often support VGA, DVI and HDMI, but not DisplayPort. The most modern connection is DisplayPort and should be used if available.

However, DVI and HDMI are the most common connections and are completely sufficient for 21 inch monitors with Full HD resolution.

VGA connections are now obsolete and should be avoided.

21 Inch Monitor Alternatives

The only alternatives in terms of size are monitors with or over 21.5 inches, as long as there is enough space between seats or desk space.

A smaller display is not advisable, as the resolution usually falls below 1920 × 1080.

For example, if you have a 21 inch television standing around at home, this can also be used as a monitor replacement. Provided the necessary connections are not missing.

A third alternative might be a laptop, although this usually goes beyond the budget and makes less sense for stationary use with an existing computer.

Types of 21 Inch Monitors

Basically we differentiate between these types of 21 inch monitor screens:

  • IPS
  • TN
  • VA

In the following we explain the different types and the respective advantages and disadvantages. We want to help you to find the most suitable 21 inch monitor for you.

21 Inch Monitors with IPS: Advantages & Disadvantages

If you are looking for a monitor for image and video editing, an IPS panel is the right choice.

It scores with a very good color rendering and with a viewing angle independent rendering of the picture.

This means that no matter from which angle you look at the monitor, the image is always displayed the same. Thus there is no falsification of the colors.

If you need the monitor for office work or occasional gaming, an IPS panel is preferable to the other panels.

  • Colour reproduction
  • Point of view
  • contrast

  • price
  • Power consumption
  • reaction time

A 21-inch screen with an IPS panel is often more expensive than one with a TN panel, but is preferable for the applications already mentioned, given the same or a similar price.

The power consumption is also higher than with TN panels, which you should not ignore. The response time is also usually higher than with TN panels.

21 Inch Monitors with TN: Advantages & Disadvantages

21 inch screens with TN panels can be cheaper to buy than the IPS counterpart.

A TN panel is therefore only recommended if the price difference is significant and you only do image or video editing as a hobby.

Are you a “serious” gamer and love the competition? Then a 21 inch monitor with TN panel is the right thing for you due to its short response times and high refresh rates.

“Fast” games such as first-person shooters particularly benefit from these two features.

For single player games on PC or console, however, you are better off with an IPS panel.

  • price
  • reaction time
  • Refresh rate

  • Colour reproduction
  • Point of view
  • contrast

The viewing angles, color rendering and contrast are not as good as with IPS panels.

IPS panels are therefore generally recommended for photo and video work, but also for watching films.

21 Inch Monitors with VA: Advantages & Disadvantages

VA panels are often referred to as a compromise solution. They were designed with the intention of combining the advantages of IPS and TN technology. Most of it succeeded.

VA panels have certain advantages over TN panels in particular. Thus they usually offer better color rendering, higher brightness levels and better viewing angles.

They are usually cheaper to buy than IPS panels and often have a higher contrast ratio of 3000: 1, although the sensibility must be questioned here.

  • contrast
  • Point of view
  • price

  • reaction time
  • poorer color rendering than IPS

Particularly disadvantageous compared to TN panels or modern IPS panels are the high response times, which do not make gaming impossible, but are also not designed for it.

21 Inch Monitors: Purchase Criteria

In the following we will show you the criteria you can use to compare and evaluate 21 inch monitors.

This makes it easier for you to get an overview and to decide on a suitable and effective device.

In summary, these are the following criteria:

  • Brightness
  • Contrast
  • Height adjustability
  • Screen
  • Connections
  • Integrated speakers

Below you can read what the respective criteria are all about and find out why it makes sense for you to purchase a device based on the criteria or not.

The brightness or luminance of a display is given in candela per square meter (cd / m²). The higher this value, the brighter the display can be set.

When working with documents and browsing the Internet, you should make sure that the monitor has at least a brightness of 200-250 cd / m².

At least 250-300 cd / m² are desirable for gaming and watching movies.

The brightness is not that important for image and video processing, as it is often reduced to 80-120 cd / m².

However, the need for certain values always depends on whether you are working in a dark or light room.

In a dark work room, the brightness is usually always turned down so as not to unnecessarily strain the eyes.

For bright rooms exposed to sunlight, a higher brightness value is necessary in order to be able to see anything at all.

The contrast ratio for screens describes the difference between the brightest white and the deepest black. That means the higher the contrast ratio, the better.

A static contrast ratio of 1000: 1 is considered the standard today and means that white tones can potentially be displayed 1000 times brighter than black tones.

So when purchasing a monitor, you should make sure that the monitor at least meets this value.

You can consider a lower ratio such as 700: 1 if the monitor is to serve as a pure office monitor.

Height adjustability

Is it important to you whether your 21 inch monitor is height adjustable? Even if not, we would recommend a monitor with this function.

You cannot know in advance whether you will change the table or chair in the future.

If this table then has a different height or the armchair is not adjustable in height, you may be looking down from an uncomfortable or even unhealthy angle and the only option left is to slide books under the monitor.

However, if you plan to buy a monitor bracket anyway, you can safely ignore this criterion.

A distinction is made between matt and glossy screens. Matte displays are often more popular here, as there are no unpleasant reflections when exposed to light rays.

If you work in a darkened room, glossy displays are a good choice. The advantage here lies in the colors and contrast that are usually stronger.

In contrast, matt displays are recommended for bright workspaces. Although the colors don’t seem quite as vivid here, you’ll have a more comfortable time working.

As mentioned at the beginning, it is advisable to connect the monitor to the PC either via DVI, HDMI or DisplayPort.

Thus at least one of these three connections should be available.

If you plan to connect a modern console to the monitor, an HDMI connection is definitely a must.

Integrated speakers

The majority of the monitors on offer have no built-in speakers, and if they do, they usually do not have as good sound quality as external ones.

Integrated speakers are only really recommended if there is no more space at the table or if there is no budget for external speakers.

Alternatively, you can still use headphones. However, you should make sure that the desired monitor has an audio output.
