All You Need to Know: Monitors
Millions of people use monitors every day. This is a special device for the visual representation of the programs played by the computer. This enables your computer to display text, images, videos and games in high quality. A 24-inch monitor is characterized above all by the fact that it has a screen diagonal of 61 centimeters.
There are many alternatives such as notebooks, smartphones or tablets that have an integrated display, but the conventional monitor is still used most often both privately and professionally.
The gaming community only considers high-performance gaming monitors. The market offers monitors in many different sizes and resolutions. Almost all models have a relatively fast response time and a color and detailed reproduction. The differences between individual 24-inch monitors are therefore limited.
Monitors have probably been an integral part of your everyday life for many years. Still, most people have some questions when looking for a new monitor. What does the aspect ratio stand for? For example, do you know what TFT or IPS means? In the following section we would like to explain the various terms that you will come across when buying a 24-inch monitor and tell you what you should pay particular attention to when buying.
The panel types of monitors
Current computer monitors usually have a flat LCD panel. An LCD panel consists of two different modules: the backlight and the individual LCD cells. The abbreviation LCD stands for Liquid Crystal Display. Depending on the polarization, the liquid crystals change their orientation and their transparency. This is why stand-alone LCD cells are also called light valves.
The biggest disadvantage of the common LCD panel is its relatively narrow viewing angle and the slightly lower image quality in direct comparison to IPS or VA panels.
On a computer screen with full HD resolution and almost 2 million pixels, every single pixel is equipped with a red, green and blue filter. An LCD monitor is therefore able to display the entire color spectrum.
The approximately 6 million subpixels of the Full HD screen are individually controlled by your computer’s graphics card. With this selective control it is possible, with the help of the rendering of the subpixels, to round off sloping displays and to make writing legible on your monitor. The most common types of panels are:
- LCD and IPS panel
- VA panel
- QLED panel
LCD-Panel and IPS-Panel
The crystals in an LCD cell align themselves with the structure of the plastic layer in the monitor. Since the structure of the plastic layers is at right angles to each other, the upper crystals twist to the lower crystals in a ratio of 90 degrees. This creates a spiral structure through which the background lighting can shine.
A single LCD crystal is supplied with the required voltage by narrow, transparent transistors or “Thin Film Transistors” (TFT). Depending on how great the tension is, the liquid crystals position themselves so that they are again parallel to each other. This then results in their transparency or opacity.
In order for this process to work at all, an LCD monitor has so-called polarizing films, which only allow the incoming light to pass in one direction. The IPS panel was developed so that you as the viewer are not too dependent on the viewing angle and experience a stronger contrast. A different arrangement of the liquid crystals made it possible to achieve higher quality with this technology.
Due to the fact that the spiral of crystals in an IPS panel requires more space, the advantage of better image quality goes hand in hand with a deeper design of the panel. Monitors with IPS panels are a bit thicker than they were originally.
This means that an IPS panel requires a stronger background lighting, which in turn is noticeable with higher energy consumption than is the case with a TN panel.
We also refer to panels with vertical alignment technology as VA panels. Monitors with this screen technology are equipped with rods that are aligned perpendicular to the image plane and allow the light from the backlight to pass through.
As soon as voltage is applied to the panel, the rods tilt. The higher the voltage, the more the rods align themselves horizontally to the image plane and the more light is blocked. The VA panel is therefore able to completely darken individual pixels.
In contrast to the LCD panel, however, there is the disadvantage that they have very slow response times and thus tend to form streaks. So this technology is less interesting for gamers.
The most modern technology in the field of screen panels are OLEDs, which stands for “Organic Light Emitting Diode”. This technology has been used for some time in smartphones or televisions and has recently also been used in computer screens. Displays with OLEDs do not require backlighting and their design is particularly flat. This is because the organic light-emitting diodes on an OLED screen, as the name suggests, light up on their own.
OLEDs score with strong contrasts and reliable performance. However, compared to the other panel types, they have a fairly short life expectancy. In addition, the prices are still comparatively high.
The bottom line is that OLED panels are particularly suitable if you want to use tomorrow’s technology today and are ready to dig a little deeper into your pocket.

The characteristics of PC monitors
The resolution of the monitors
The resolution of the screen describes the number of pixels available. The more image points or pixels an image has, the more detailed and sharper it appears. The first number mentioned is the horizontal lines, while the second number indicates the individual columns. To calculate the number of pixels on your monitor, all you have to do is multiply the number of horizontal lines by the number of columns.
If a computer screen has a resolution of 1,920 x 1,080, it has exactly 2,073,600 pixels. The following resolutions are still often represented in stores today:
- 1,280 x 1,024 pixels
- 1,366 x 768 pixels
- 1,600 x 900 pixels
- 1,920 x 1,080 pixels (full HD)
- 1,920 x 1,200 pixels
- 2,560 x 1,440 pixels
- 3,840 x 2,160 pixels (Ultra HD or 4K)
Monitors with a full HD resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels have by far the largest market share. You can also find this resolution on Blu-ray discs, for example. The devices in our 24-inch monitor comparison also have a full HD resolution, which guarantees you high-resolution images.
A monitor with an Ultra HD resolution of 3,840 x 2,160 pixels is particularly interesting for graphic designers, PC gamers or film enthusiasts due to its almost perfect reproduction of details and contrasts. However, this modern resolution is not exactly cheap and is usually only found on very large devices.
If you are looking for a monitor for your home office and need as much space as possible for various programs, you should choose a screen with a resolution of 2,560 x 1,440 pixels. In direct comparison to a screen with Ultra HD resolution, the text and symbols here are in an eye-friendly size.
The size of the PC monitor
If you are looking for an inexpensive monitor for occasional office work, a device with a screen diagonal of 49 centimeters or 19 inches is perfectly adequate. Most users, however, opt for a monitor that is 22 or 24 inches. Such devices already have high image quality, but are available at quite affordable prices.
Screens with a screen diagonal of 26 or 27 inches or 66 or 69 centimeters are also gaining popularity. The extremely large 34- or 43-inch monitors are much rarer. These screens often come in very handy. With a diagonal of 86 centimeters, they are an ideal alternative to using two monitors at the same time.
The aspect ratio of 24-inch monitors
The aspect ratio of the outdated CRT monitors was always 4:3. However, most of the current flat screen monitors have a wide aspect ratio of 16:9. The aspect ratio of 5:4 is also very popular for special monitors for office work because it enables greater convenience when editing and reading documents. There is also the super widescreen ratio of 21:9, which is particularly interesting for watching films or playing games.
Most of the 24-inch monitors in our comparison have an aspect ratio of 16:9. However, devices with an aspect ratio of 4:3 are also included.
The different connections of a 24-inch monitor
Most monitors available on the market offer you several connections. DVI and HDMI connections are particularly common. Both ports allow you to connect your monitor to a computer. The somewhat older DVI connection, however, is not able to play back high-resolution content. This only works via HDMI.
An additional DVI connection on the monitor can still be very useful. Because many graphics cards also only have a single HDMI input. If you now want to connect a second monitor to your computer, you can use the DVI slot.
Even the tube monitor was already connected to the computer with the analog VGA plug. In addition to the digital connection options, many flat-screen monitors also have an analog VGA connection. With the cheapest models, the VGA connection is often the only connection option.
You can easily recognize the VGA connection by the bright blue D-Sub connector. Since this cable forwards analog signals to a digital monitor and these first have to be converted, so-called conversion losses can occur. This can be noticeable, for example, by a lower image quality, which only has a negative effect at very high resolutions.
Many monitors with low resolutions (e.g. 1,366 x 766 pixels) use the VGA connection as a connection option, because this has proven to be particularly inexpensive.
DVI and HDMI
After a while, the VGA connection was followed by the DVI connection (Digital Visual Interface). This is the first digital connection that is still used today to connect many screens.
Then came the HDMI connection (High Definition Multimedia Interface), which allowed us to enjoy films, pictures and games in HD quality for the first time. This connection is also distinguished by the fact that it can transmit audio and video signals as well. Nowadays, the HDMI connector is the most common connection option.
Display port and USB connection
The display port connection was created as a powerful alternative to the HDMI connection. With this connection, very high transfer rates of up to 30 gigabits per second can be achieved. This in turn enables resolutions of up to 7,680 x 4,320 pixels or 33,177,600 pixels. The display port is also compatible with HDCP copy protection and DPCP content protection. However, this type of connection has not really caught on and has only been used in a relatively small number of models so far.
The USB port is another way of connecting a monitor to your computer. This is even able to transmit images and supply the monitor with power at the same time. This makes this connection option ideal for mobile use. Because the graphics card on a USB monitor is only emulated via software, there may be a drop in performance depending on the resolution of the monitor.
The USB port is also often used to connect a second monitor.
Pay attention to this when buying a 24-Inch Monitor
If you are looking for a new monitor, you should first consider the purposes for which you will actually need the device. You can then base your purchase decision on this. So that you can find a device that can meet your requirements, in the following section we provide you with the most important factors that you should look out for when buying a 24-inch monitor.
A 24-inch monitor offers you a solid screen diagonal of 61 centimeters, which is also convenient for watching films or series. You also benefit from the advantage of the mostly significantly lower price than is the case with larger monitors.
It is important that you observe the optimal seat spacing. This results from 1.6 times the existing screen diagonal.
Example: 24 inches x 1.6 = 38.4 inches or around 97 centimeters. With a 24-inch monitor, the seat pitch should be around 97 centimeters. If you cannot keep this distance at your workplace, it is better to use a smaller device.
If you only want to use your monitor for office work and do not value the playback of media in 16:9 format, you are best advised to choose a device with an aspect ratio of 5:4.
Screens with this aspect ratio display most office applications in an optimal size. Research on the Internet is also very convenient on the almost square screen because you get a lot of information at a glance.
If you use your computer far away from office applications, a screen with an aspect ratio of 16:9 is an option. These monitors are not only ideal for PC gamers or film enthusiasts, but can also convince in significantly more complex applications. The formats 21:9 or 21:10 are hardly represented on 24-inch monitors.
If you want to watch series and films in FULL HD, your new screen should have at least 1,920 x 1,080 pixels. This resolution has been the unspoken standard for some time and is also available for all devices in our comparison. Screens with an Ultra HD resolution of 3,840 x 2,160 pixels offer a higher picture quality, but are much more expensive.
Is high image quality important to you or do you use programs for image or video editing on a regular basis? Then you should opt for an IPS panel that guarantees you an impressive picture quality with strong colors and strong contrasts.
