Frequently Asked Questions: All-In-One Computer
What is an All-In-One Computer?
All-in-one PCs are all those computers with a PC, monitor, loudspeaker and computer in one and the same housing.
The term is limited to desktop computers. Notebooks, tablets and other portables that also meet this requirement are not included.
According to technical experts, the IBM 5100 from 1975 is considered the forefather of today’s all-in-one computers.
Who should use an All-In-One Computer?
An all-in-one PC is suitable for everyone who is looking for a work device that is as wireless and uncomplicated as possible.
Since all components are already inside the case of the computer, there is no need for a large number of cables that would be necessary to connect the individual components. Usually only one cable is left for the power supply of the device.
This avoids cable clutter at the desk. In addition, the use of a computer is significantly less stressful, as it is no longer necessary to ensure that the individual components of the PC are correctly connected.
What alternatives are there to an All-In-One Computer?
Depending on the type of user, classic desktop PCs, laptops or tablets are a suitable alternative to the all-in-one computer.
A classic desktop computer is recommended if your computer is to be used mainly stationary.
The initial installation of a desktop PC is somewhat more difficult due to the numerous cabling, but upgrading the computer is much easier.
Laptops and tablets, like the all-in-one computer, impress with their simplicity, as they almost completely dispense with any cabling.
Especially if you want to be mobile with your device, these two device types represent a suitable alternative for you.
You should use a laptop if you want to run more demanding applications on your computer.
For simpler tasks, a tablet is sufficient, which can be converted into a laptop with a suitable dock if necessary.
Overall, all three alternatives impress with their lower price compared to the all-in-one PCs.
Types of All-In-One Computers
If you have already decided to buy an all-in-one PC, you can choose from the following device types:
- Entry-level device
- Middle class device
- High-end device
Choosing a suitable type of device depends not only on your budget but also on what you primarily want to use your all-in-one computer for.
Entry-level All-In-One Computer: Advantages & Disadvantages
Entry-level devices from All-in-One PCs impress with their low price. You can purchase one of these complete PCs for as little as US$250.
Entry-level devices are more than sufficient for simple office applications such as word processing. In this case, you don’t have to spend more money than necessary.
In addition, working with the beginner devices is very pleasant due to their quiet operation.
- Cheap price
- Ideal for office
- Outdated technology
However, if you are regularly entrusted with somewhat more demanding Office applications such as database management or computing processes in Excel, the performance of an entry-level device may not be enough.
In order to offer the devices as cheaply as possible, manufacturers usually use older technology. This means that the inexpensive devices often only meet minimum requirements.
This can have a negative effect on the user experience with the complete PC.
Therefore, you should consider carefully whether you would prefer to opt for a mid-range device.
Middle Class All-In-One Computer: Advantages & Disadvantages
Mid-range PCs are a good alternative to entry-level devices.
They offer significantly better technology than the various entry-level models and mostly at a price that is still quite affordable beyond 800 dollars.
This makes them a reliable tool for various areas of application in everyday life.
- Price-performance ratio
- Ideal for everyday use
- More expensive than comparable computers
- Not suitable for gaming
Even if mid-range computers impress with their good price-performance ratio, they clearly lag behind in terms of price when compared to comparable laptops.
The all-in-one computer of this class also often reaches its limits in the area of gaming.
Games with simple to medium graphics requirements are usually no problem for the all-in-one PC in the mid-range. However, if you want to play newer games on the highest graphics level, the device may not meet your requirements.
In this case, you should take a closer look at the all-in-one devices of the high-end class.
High-End All-In-One Computer: Advantages & Disadvantages
In a direct performance comparison, the computers in the high-end device class clearly outperform the computers in the entry-level and mid-range.
Due to the better technology, these devices work significantly faster and meet even the most extreme demands.
These computers are also technically best equipped and sometimes have the best choice of materials.
- Best equipment
- High price
- Not the very latest technology
- High power consumption
However, the best equipment also has a financial impact, so that high-end devices have the highest prices.
Even if computers in this category boast the best technology, it is not always guaranteed that they also have the latest technology.
Comparable desktop PCs are usually more advanced in this area.
When using a high-end PC, you should also be prepared for very high power consumption. In addition, they often work at a very high volume level.
All-In-One Computer: Purchase Criteria
In the following, we will show you the central criteria by which you should choose the all-in-one PC that is best for you.
The following points are decisive:
- Operating System
As with classic desktop PCs, the all-in-one devices have computers with Windows and Apple’s MacOS operating systems.
There are also a handful of PCs that are delivered without an operating system as standard.
Here, however, the acquisition only makes sense if you have some basic technical knowledge and know how to install an operating system on a device from scratch.
While Windows is considered to be the most widely used operating system and thus offers a high level of compatibility for a wide variety of computer programs, MacOS impresses with its easy-to-understand user guidance.
Windows runs on complete computers from various manufacturers, while MacOS officially only runs on computers from Apple.
However, if necessary, Windows can also be used alternatively on Apple devices. The reverse is also true for installing MacOS on Windows computers, but this requires a high degree of technical expertise and is hardly recommended.
Regarding the screen, there are two things you should examine the device for:
- Screen size
- Screen resolution
The screen size is usually given in inches. Sometimes the seller also refers to the corresponding length of the screen diagonal in cm.
To avoid any confusion with the information about the screen size, we have prepared the following conversion table for you:
- 19″ – 48 cm
- 21″ – 53.3 cm
- 22″ – 55.9 cm
- 24″ – 61.0 cm
- 26″ – 66.0 cm
- 32″ – 81.3 cm
- 34″ – 86.36 cm
As you can see from the table, you can choose between a screen size of at least 19 to a maximum of 34 inches.
However, less than 20 inches are no longer up to date. These devices are recommended for surfing the Internet.
The most common all-in-one computer sizes range from 21.5 to 27 inches. These sizes are ideal for various everyday computer applications.
Size ratios that go beyond 27 inches are particularly popular with gamers and graphic designers.
The respective resolution of the screen is closely related to this.
Basically, smaller screens offer comparatively lower resolutions than larger screens. The different resolutions are labeled with different abbreviations.
For a better understanding you should look at the following table:
- VGA – 640 x 480 pixels
- Standard HD – 1,280 x 720 pixels
- Full HD – 1,920 x 1,080 pixels
- QHD – 2,560 x 1,440 pixels
- UHD / 4K – 4,096 x 2,160 pixels
The higher the displayed resolution, the better the picture you will get.
When it comes to the memory of All-in-One PCs, it is important to note that there are basically two types of memory:
- Hard disk space
Hard drive space is the part of the computer that you can store your data and documents on.
The main memory, on the other hand, describes a type of intermediate memory that is required for processes and programs running on the computer.
For the hard drive, you can choose between the following two technologies:
The abbreviation HDD stands for “Hard Drive Disc” and describes a physical storage medium that stores your data magnetically.
In contrast, the SSD, also known as a “solid state disk”, corresponds to a flash memory, similar to a USB stick.
The two storage media differ in terms of their price and have an enormous impact on the speed of your computer.
If you use an SSD, you enable your computer to work much faster and more efficiently.
For the same price, you only get half the storage space of an HDD with an SSD.
Older models in particular mostly use an HDD, while newer models have a combination of SSD and HDD.
The computers each offer different memory combinations, as you can see here:
- SSD only – 512 GB
- HDD only – 1 TB
- SSD + HDD – 128 GB + 1 TB
- SSD + HDD – 256 GB + 1 TB
The second memory, the main memory, also has an impact on the performance of your PC depending on its size. The larger the memory, the more efficient and powerful your computer is.
All-in-one PCs usually have a memory of at least 4 GB, which can also assume values of 8 to a maximum of 16 GB.
Depending on the main application you are pursuing, you have to pay attention to the respective graphics performance when choosing your all-in-one computer.
Two things are decisive for the graphics performance:
- Graphic Card
You can think of a processor as a kind of arithmetic unit that processes various commands on the computer.
The graphics card, in turn, converts the data processed by the processor so that you can see it on a screen.
The tasks of the processor include computing, efficient control of the individual components of the system and data transmission. The processor is therefore often referred to as the heart of the computer.
For the processor, the performance is specified in the clock frequency Hertz, which refers to how fast the processor can perform work steps. In short, the higher this Hertz number, the more powerful a processor is.
With all-in-one PCs, this Hertz number ranges from a minimum of around 1.5 GHz to a maximum of 3.6 GHz. In addition, a processor can have individual sub-units, the so-called cores. The more cores, the more powerful your device is.
In addition, you have to make sure that there are different generations of processors that provide different levels of performance. The same applies to graphics cards, which you should pay attention to when buying a complete computer depending on the area of application.
If you mainly want to perform simpler tasks on your computer, such as word processing or watching videos, a combination of a weaker graphics card and processor is definitely sufficient. As a gamer or designer, however, you should opt for significantly more powerful processors and graphics cards.
Since all-in-one devices should be as space-saving as possible, they do without unnecessary cabling and instead offer wireless connection technologies.
You can connect to the Internet via a WiFi signal, and devices such as keyboard and mouse are connected via Bluetooth.
In addition, all All-in-One PCs offer an HDMI connection, although an additional adapter is sometimes necessary.
An HDMI port is useful because you can easily connect an additional display to your computer.
The all-in-one devices from Apple, the iMacs, also offer a so-called Thunderbolt connection. This port can be useful depending on the screen you want to use with your computer.
In addition to the MacOS operating system, the Thunderbolt connection is another peculiarity of Apple’s all-in-one computers.
It is also the same with all devices that they have a USB connection.
However, you have to note that USB ports differ from one another in terms of their number and type. It is important to differentiate between the following types of USB:
- USB 2.0
- USB 3.0
Basically, USB 3.0 is considered to be significantly faster than USB 2.0, USB-C describes another form of connection that makes connecting devices much easier.
Depending on the device you want to connect, you should pay attention to the correct USB port.
Choosing the right USB port can be relevant for you if you regularly exchange large amounts of data between your computer and an external hard drive.
Facts about All-In-One Computers
How do I connect a monitor to my All-In-One Computer?
As already mentioned, all-in-one computers offer an HDMI connection, or in the case of Apple devices, a Thunderbolt connection.
You can use these ports to easily connect a screen with a cable, as long as it has a suitable HDMI or Thunderbolt port.
However, if your screen does not have either of these two connections, you will have to use a suitable adapter.
The screen is usually recognized immediately. If this is not the case, you may have to install a driver on your device or simply select the correct image source.
