What is a binding machine?
Having your own binding machine saves you having to go to the bookbinding shop or the copy shop, where binding is also often possible. In the office or at home, several pages of paper are joined using the binding machine. This is done using processes such as thermal bonding or eyelets or punching.
The various methods of binding often require additional material and can generally be carried out in a few simple steps. With the help of the binding machine, work documents or private documents are bound together. Not only important business documents can be neatly sorted in this way, such a binding is also an option for manuscripts, for applications or for a wedding newspaper you have created yourself.

The binding machines themselves are solidly built and are mostly based on a simple construction. This always depends on the type of binding system. In an external test of the binding devices, ring, wire, thermal and plastic binding devices were presented, which, depending on the model, are suitable for private use or for extensive business use.
With the help of these devices it is easy to keep an overview, be it in the office or in the home office. Even though digital documents and presentations are being used more and more frequently, the bound printouts are still used for better visualization and enable users to leaf through the documents without a PC or other electronic device.
How does a binding machine work?
The different types of binding machines can also be used by laypeople without a lengthy introduction. The main functions are similar at first glance, but closer inspection reveals the differences.
With die-cut binding, the devices are equipped with a punch at the front that enables users to set the paper size with the slide switch. In most cases it is Din A 4 paper, but binding machines for Din A 5 or Din A 3 are also available. Special formats can also be bound on many devices. The paper to be punched is neatly stacked on top of each other so that the edge is absolutely straight.
Then it is inserted into the corresponding opening and punched with a lever movement. Here, the punching knives push their way through the paper layers, with resistance usually being felt.
Following this punching, the binding takes place: For this purpose, the wire or plastic binding is inserted into the device, whereby the rings must open upwards. The binding teeth are clamped by a corresponding device in order to receive the punched papers. When you put the lever back or when you turn the switch back, this binding closes again.
A bound portfolio was created from the loose sheets of paper. This looks particularly professional if a cover sheet and a stable backing have been added before binding.
A thermal binding machine is almost easier to use, but the binding process itself is a bit more complex. The sheets are placed in the corresponding binding folders, which have a prepared adhesive band.
The bow of this adhesive folder with the pages in it then goes into the device, which first liquefies the adhesive during heating and then creates a permanent connection between the folder and the sheets. This method is similar to bookbinding, even if the outer folder is not as stable as the hardcover of books.
Advantages of binding machines

Types of binding machines
A suitably reliable binding machine should be selected for binding a longer master’s thesis or scientific documentation. Many of these devices can bind 100 sheets, some even up to 200 or 300 sheets. Since the punching is done in stages, the maximum number of sheets to be punched says little about the capacity. However, a look at the appropriate spine provides information about the maximum number of sheets that can be bound together.

A doctoral or master’s thesis often consists of 300 to 400 pages, which is why the binding machine must have the appropriate capacity. For smaller booklets, for example manuals or detailed product descriptions, a binding machine with a capacity of 100 or a maximum of 200 sheets is generally sufficient.

Possibly. special spines or foils can also be used to make the document look even more professional.
Thermal binding is usually used where papers are often bound. Such a device can also be used in the private sector, for example to bind club magazines or similar documents. Since the thermal binding machine heats up during the binding process, it must not be moved aside immediately afterwards. The corresponding thermal binding folders, which are equipped with a cover sheet and a back cover, are required as accessories.
Which of these two main variants is more suitable for personal use depends above all on what you expect from the bound documents and how you want to handle them. Documents with thermal binding are ideal for leafing through and for carrying in a briefcase. But if you like to flip the pages completely and don’t mind the slightly protruding spiral binding, the click binding is the better decision.
Binding machine alternatives
There are a few alternatives to the conventional binding machines presented in many tests, which are listed below. This includes, for example, an eyelet binding. This form of binding is used, for example, for legal documents such as contracts or for certificates. Some devices for eyelet binding do the punching and binding in a single operation. An eyelet binding can be filed in a normal folder and is characterized by the stabilizing rings around the holes.
The eyelets or holes for the corresponding documents can, however, also be produced manually with a punch, in which case the stabilizing eyelets are generally dispensed with. In private use, such a binding is suitable, for example, for a wedding or school newspaper. A band is pulled through the holes, which fixes the sides and also provides a personal touch. The less attractive alternative of the filing strips is sufficient for grouping work materials. These have the advantage that they have their own holes to prepare the connected papers for filing in a folder.
If only a few papers are to be connected to one another, a clamping bar can also replace the spiral binding. This is simply pushed onto the long side of the paper stack and its clamping function ensures a secure fit. If necessary, the sheets can simply be pulled out and pushed back in later.
How does the operation of the thermal binding machine work?
The thermal binding machine needs a short period to warm up before it is ready for use. The pages that are exactly on top of each other are placed in the binding folder and inserted with the back into the device.
The heat in the thermal binding machine melts the adhesive in the special folders and activates its binding properties. After removing the folder, it cools down quickly, then a strong and resilient binding is ensured.
How do you straighten the pages before binding?
Before the stacked pages can be bound, they must be straightened as neatly as possible. This is usually done by gently hitting the stack on the edge. After tapping it several times both vertically and horizontally, the pages should lie precisely on top of each other so that nothing protrudes.

The front and back of the bound folders are also important accessories. This is often a cardboard back that serves as reinforcement and a transparent film as the front. These additional reinforcements are punched together with the sides.
How is a manual binding machine operated?
The mechanical, manually operated devices require a little more preparation. First, the sheets are aligned exactly on top of each other, then they are first punched in the spiral binding machine.
This is done by inserting the sides and operating the corresponding lever. If there are many pages, then these are punched in several stacks one after the other. The punch capacity shows how many sheets can be processed at once.
After punching, the spiral binding or plastic binding is placed with the opening facing up in the system provided for it. The binding can be opened by turning a knob or moving a lever so that the paper with the punched holes can be hung in it. The return of the button or lever closes the binding, and the loose sheets of paper have turned into a handy folder.
Does the binding machine need cleaning?
A complete cleaning of the device is usually not necessary. However, the container for the punched-out pieces of paper should be emptied regularly. This is usually done by removing the entire container or by opening a lid. To remove coarse soiling or scraps of paper, it is sufficient to wipe the binding machine with a soft, dry cloth from time to time. Stubborn dirt can be washed off with a damp cloth, but you should make sure that the rust-sensitive parts remain dry.
For what purpose are thermal bindings the right choice?
The nature of the bond indicates the purpose for which it is primarily suitable. Documents that have been combined with a perfect binding can be stacked particularly well without anything protruding. In addition, they can easily be sent by post and do not need an extra large envelope.
What are the main advantages of spiral binding?
The plastic or metal spiral bindings protrude slightly beyond the size of the paper, which is seen as a disadvantage in some uses. However, they have the great advantage that they are significantly more flexible than thermal binding. If necessary, a spiral binding can be opened again to remove, exchange or add a sheet.
What should I do if the edges were punched crookedly or at the wrong height?
Depending on how strong the shift is during punching, the entire process including printing must be repeated. Since mostly only a few pages are punched at a time, this does not affect the entire document, but only the incorrectly punched sheets. In an emergency, the punched edge can also be cut off, but then the sides are a little narrower.
This solution is therefore only suitable for a printout of ten or 15 pages that should not be combined with additional sheets. If the edges of the cutting knives have only been touched very lightly, the cutting can simply be carried out again. A new printout does not necessarily have to be made even if the punch is placed at an angle, depending on where the punch is located.
If more than half of the document can be fixed to the spiral binding, at least the necessary stability is provided. This is sufficient for an internal meeting in an emergency. For a professional and tidy impression, however, the document should definitely be recreated and precisely bound.
