What is a chest freezer?

Chest freezers are available up to a size of 600 l net useful capacity. The largest freezers hold about 360 l. Mini freezers provide from 30 l of usable space for freezing.
The purpose of freezing food is to slow down or stop biochemical processes. The temperatures reached by a refrigerator are not sufficient for this purpose. Bacteria and microorganisms can only stop multiplying or multiply extremely slowly at temperatures far below zero degrees Celsius – the natural decay of the food is therefore suspended.
With a freezer, meat, fish, fruit and vegetables can be preserved over a long period of time. Storage times of up to one year are possible, although sensitive foods will then suffer a loss of taste.
Packaged foods should have as little residual air as possible inside the package, otherwise there is a risk of freezer burn. This causes the food to dry out, which is detrimental to taste but not to health. Freezer burn can be avoided by using vacuum packaging.
Large freezers can hold considerable amounts of food – so it’s important to keep track of what’s inside. Before freezing, the food should be labeled with the freezing date. Special adhesive labels can be used for this purpose. Freshly purchased food from the supermarket freezer should be placed in the home freezer as soon as possible so as not to interrupt the cold chain. How does a chest freezer work?
Every freezer and chest freezer uses a refrigeration unit for cooling, which works on the principle of gas compression and gas conversion. Even a refrigerator-freezer combination – although consisting of two units – often uses only one refrigeration unit. The unit of a refrigerator-freezer is designed to be more powerful than a pure refrigerator, since a refrigerator without a freezer compartment only requires a temperature level of just above zero degrees Celsius.
The advantage of pure freezers or chest freezers, however, is that the cooling units can be specifically tailored to the performance requirements of these devices. This results in greater effectiveness and guarantees extremely smooth operation of the appliance.
All freezers used for freezing food in the home use a compressor refrigeration system to achieve low temperatures. The only exceptions are freezer modules available for mobile purposes, which operate on the principle of absorption refrigeration. However, for stationary purposes, freezers working on the absorption principle are not widely used because of their poor efficiency.
In a freezer, a refrigerant is highly compressed by a compressor. This compression causes the gas to heat up. As it passes through an arrangement of cooling coils called a condenser, the gas radiates the absorbed heat back into the environment, whereupon the refrigerant condenses. The remaining excess pressure is discharged via an expansion valve. In the evaporator of the freezer, the refrigerant absorbs the heat of evaporation and the gas is again fed to the compressor. The operating principle of a freezer is thus similar to that of a heat pump, with the signs reversed.
Ultimately, then, it is the compression of a gas that generates the power of freezers. The cooling function is generated by a fast-moving gas stream that constantly changes its state of aggregation. The processes in a freezer can be well illustrated by a comparison.
The liquid and low-density coolant resembles a wide river that winds its way down from the mountains through the countryside to the ocean. At the mouth of the river, all the transported river water is released into the ocean. The sea water is warmed by the sun, evaporates and rises. Clouds form, from which precipitation falls, which also replenishes the river’s headwaters.
This natural cycle finds its technical mirror image in the refrigeration cycle that takes place in freezers and chest freezers. The coolant in a freezer changes its state in quite a similar way as soon as the refrigeration cycle is put into operation. The energy resulting from the change between the gaseous and liquid states is used to produce cold.
The coolant begins the cooling process as a low-compression gas. In the compressor, usually located at the rear of the unit, the gas molecules are packed more densely and the pressure is increased. As a direct reaction, the gas heats up. The heated, compressed refrigerant is forced from the compressor through cooling coils into an evaporator. The cooling coils, located behind or below the freezer, release the absorbed heat into the ambient air.
As the refrigerant passes through the cooling coils, its temperature drops, but the high pressure is maintained. The refrigerant releases some of its pressure as it passes through the next unit. In the expansion valve, the pressure is regulated and the now liquid coolant is transferred to the next stage. As it enters the large-surface evaporator, the pressure still present drops abruptly, so that the coolant returns to the state of a low-compression gas. The evaporator completely removes the remaining heat from the gas. The gas, thus strongly cooled, causes the temperature of the unit to drop to the level required to keep the food fresh. Finally, the refrigerant is again fed to the compressor, closing the refrigeration cycle.
Today, refrigeration units are no longer allowed to contain chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), which are harmful to the climate. When buying a new appliance, customers can therefore be sure that they are only being offered appliances with environmentally compatible coolants.
What is the power consumption of a chest freezer?
Freezers are among those household appliances that are operated around the clock. Their power consumption is therefore clearly noticeable on the annual bill of the electricity provider. Anyone interested in a chest freezer or a freezer should therefore find out about the power consumption when buying an appliance. The deviations can be considerable from device to device and also depend on the type of construction. Freezers consume less electricity the less often they are filled. Removing food also causes freezers to temporarily increase their power, provided the door is left open for a longer period of time.
During longer absences and if the house or apartment is empty for weeks or even months, it may be advisable to switch off the freezer. Before doing so, remove all food. What is the NoFrost function?
Many freezers offer a NoFrost function, which is supposed to make defrosting unnecessary. This advertising message is not entirely true, because defrosting the freezer can only be delayed, but not completely avoided. However, the times at which the annoying defrosting is necessary can be considerably stretched.
Freezers with NoFrost technology were first developed and marketed by Bosch. This feature also distinguishes the freezer comparison test winner. They use an electronic control system that helps to reduce humidity. The NoFrost technology consumes electricity, but this disadvantage is made up for by the fact that due to the reduced ice formation, the device has to provide a lower cooling capacity and does not ramp up again after a short period of time.
In NoFrost appliances, the cooling fins no longer radiate the cold directly into the interior. The cold air is radiated in a separate section of the appliance and blown into the appliance by a fan. Even those who don’t yet have a freezer or chest freezer know the benefits that frozen foods offer. Almost every refrigerator has at least one freezer compartment, no matter how small and inefficient it may be, especially in old refrigerators. The practical advantages of a freezer compartment start with the preparation of ice cubes and water ice.
If you have children in the household, you’ll have to cool the odd bump or ice a finger held carelessly over a candle from time to time. It’s good when the ice cube tray in the freezer always has the cooling ice cubes ready. Ice cubes fulfill their actual purpose in summer, when cocktails cooled with ice provide refreshment during a heat wave. With good planning, a well-stocked freezer can conjure up every conceivable meal without having to make a trip to the supermarket in advance.
Whether it’s a quick ready meal, a delicious pizza or a juicy steak – everything is in the house and just waiting to be prepared on the stove. And don’t forget the many vitamin-rich salads that can be made by stocking up on suitable fruit and fresh vegetables. The freezer thus becomes a device that promotes health and fitness of the whole family.
Types of Chest Freezers
Before buying a freezer, every prospective buyer faces a fundamental decision: freezer or chest freezer? To make the right choice, it is necessary to consider some test criteria, which depend on the priorities of the user and the given space.
A freezer offers the user better accessibility to the food. Items can be sorted and arranged by refrigeration levels, just like in a refrigerator. Because cold air sinks to the bottom, the ambient temperature in a freezer is a few degrees lower on the lowest level than on the highest levels. Frozen goods that are to be kept for a particularly long time can therefore be specifically placed on the lowest levels.
On the other hand, foods that are to be removed soon can be stored on the upper shelves. Lighting is also usually better in a freezer than in large chest freezers, which either have no lighting or often only a central lighting unit.
However, chest freezers also have their advantages. They consume less electricity, because in freezers, due to the vertical arrangement, the refrigeration cycle devours more energy. Chest freezers are usually cheaper to buy than the technically more complex freezers for the same usable capacity. Even when food is removed frequently, there is hardly any temperature rise in freezers, as the cold air sinks to the bottom and hardly mixes with the warm outside air.
This results in another advantage: in the event of a power failure, the cold is preserved for longer, since a chest freezer is less dependent on circulation of the interior air than an upright freezer. A good freezer also freezes food reliably for long periods of time, but high-performance units have higher power consumption because, unlike chest freezers, the upper levels would not be adequately cooled without supporting air circulation.
The maximum space the appliance can occupy at the installation site is usually fixed. Those looking for a freezer for the kitchen area often opt for a chest freezer for space reasons. While freezers achieve a larger volume through a greater appliance depth, freezers grow in height to achieve a high net usable content. Large appliances are over 190 cm high. If there are children in the household, it should be borne in mind that the upper compartments can no longer be reached without help. To avoid accidents that can occur, for example, by putting a stool, all food that should be accessible to the little ones should be placed on the lower levels.
The need of the usable volume depends, on the one hand, on the number of people and, on the other hand, on their living habits. If the household members are often away from home and use the freezer mainly on weekends, a smaller model may be sufficient even if there are several people in the house. How far away the nearest shopping source is is also decisive. In rural areas, many people tend to freeze food over a longer period of time to save unnecessary trips to the supermarket.
The benefit of energy-efficient freezers should not be underestimated. Freezers and chest freezers, which convince with great economy, should always be given preference. Since the devices remain in use for years and not infrequently even for decades, great importance should be attached to future-proofing.

Ideally, switches and buttons should be so intuitive that the functions are obvious even without intensive study of the operating instructions. However, before using a new freezer for the first time, the user manual should definitely be consulted, as it often contains important instructions on how to prepare for operation.

Freezer bags are available with or without zipper. They are ideal for freezing prepared vegetables, meat and fruit. Many of the freezer bags offered are also suitable for vacuumizers. Vacuuming is recommended to avoid the occurrence of freezer burn on the food.
