Frequently Asked Questions: Convertible Laptops
What are the advantages and disadvantages compared to a laptop?
A big advantage is certainly that most convertibles have a touchscreen. This can be used both with your finger and with a special pen.
Another advantage is the low weight and the mostly somewhat smaller dimensions. This makes the convertible much easier to transport. With 2-in-1 convertibles, you can even separate the tablet and keyboard if, for example, you only need the tablet.
- Touch screen
- Small and light
- Some devices have a separate keyboard
- Lower performance
- Higher purchase price
- Key layout not uniform
One disadvantage is the lower performance. Notebooks have much more space to be able to install more powerful hardware. There are already very powerful convertibles out there, but they don’t come close to notebooks.
Most of the time, these convertibles are outrageously expensive. Laptops also have better keyboards. This is particularly important for longer texts. It is also possible that the key layout on convertibles is different.
How important is the convertible's performance?
The performance usually also determines the price. The better the hardware components, the more powerful the convertible, but also the more expensive. You should think carefully about the area of application for your convertible.
If you mainly want to watch films and use various office programs, then you can do without powerful hardware. This also allows you to choose a cheaper model and save a lot of money.
However, if you want to edit pictures and cut videos, then you need more computing power. You then have to dig deeper into your pocket. In most cases you will also need a touch pen in order to work better and more precisely with the convertible.
A touch pen can be used in a variety of ways, especially in drawing programs. But it also offers many advantages for everyday use.
Do I need a silent convertible?
Annoying fan noises could be a thing of the past in the future. Because the hardware is becoming more and more energy-efficient and often only an SSD is used, fans can increasingly be dispensed with in notebooks.
If the volume is very important to you, you should inform yourself very carefully in advance and read through test reports if necessary. If you want a very powerful convertible, you can’t do without the fans in most cases.
Do I need a keyboard or is the touch keyboard on the display sufficient?
If you want to write longer texts and don’t just search for a post on Google quickly, we recommend using a docking keyboard. Or you can buy a 360 ° convertible right away.
Can I write and draw on a convertible?
On the display of most convertibles, you can write or draw with a pen like you would on a piece of paper. This allows handwritten notes, sketches, graphics and, depending on the talent, complete illustrations to be created directly on the display. That too can be very exciting depending on the target group.
This function is also very interesting for taking notes at university or at school.
Types of 2-in1 Convertible Laptops
Basically, one can differentiate between two different types of convertibles:
- Convertible with docking keyboard (2-in-1 notebook)
- Convertible with 360° hinge
Depending on the type, there are of course convertibles that have touchscreens or other additional features. The most striking difference, however, is whether the keyboard can be removed and the convertible can be used like a tablet, or whether the keyboard is permanently attached to the screen.
It is also very important to know for which main purpose you want to use your convertible. If you have to type a lot, the keyboard should be very good quality. If you use your convertible for drawing, possibly with a pen and a touchscreen, then the main focus is on the screen.
Other important points are weight, size, volume and workmanship. These factors will be discussed in more detail later.
In the following section we would like to help you to find the perfect convertible for your individual application. For this purpose, the individual areas of responsibility will be discussed in more detail and we will give you tips on what you should pay particular attention to.
Convertible with Docking Keyboard: Advantages & Disadvantages
If you want to use your convertible without a keyboard, you should use a 2in1 notebook. Thanks to the docking keyboard, you can use the convertible as both a notebook and a tablet. The terms detachable or hybrid notebook are also often used.
With 2in1 notebooks, you also have to choose between operating systems such as Windows, Android or iOS. Windows offers the largest choice in this regard. With Windows 10, the 2-in-1 device can be operated very conveniently using a touchscreen and digital pen as well as a keyboard. Several programs can be open and this enables multi-tasking.
There are different ways to bring tablet and notebook together. With detachables, the hardware components such as processor, RAM and memory are located in the tablet. It can be connected to a suitable keyboard via Bluetooth or a docking mechanism.
This is how the tablet becomes a notebook. Some 2in1 notebooks have an additional battery or hard drive in the keyboard that can only be used in notebook mode. As well as other connections, such as USB or a memory card reader.
- Can be used both as a tablet and as a laptop
- Very flat and light in weight
- Very quiet during operation
- Usually a little underperforming
- Not that stable
- Keyboard takes getting used to
You should resort to a detachable if you particularly value the advantages of a tablet: low weight, a flat housing even with the keyboard attached, and usually completely silent operation, because in many cases these devices have an SSD and no fan.
A disadvantage, especially with cheap devices, is that the tablet is usually heavier than the docking keyboard. This is why the convertibles are unstable in notebook mode when you touch the touchscreen. This can be avoided with a built-in stand.
This construction is also difficult to use on an uneven surface, such as the thighs. In addition, only a few 2-in-1 notebooks have a docking keyboard that can keep up with a good notebook keyboard. Most of them are annoyed by small keys, a greatly changed key layout or a small touchpad, if there is one at all.
Convertible with 360° Hinge: Advantages & Disadvantages
If you mainly use your convertible with a keyboard and you don’t need a tablet, then you should use a 360 ° convertible. These usually also offer a slightly better keyboard and more performance.
The special thing about this type of convertible is that the display can be folded 360 degrees onto the underside of the keyboard. So you can also use it as a tablet, even if the fixed keyboard makes it a bit clunkier and heavier than a 2-in-1 notebook. If the convertible stands in front of you like an upside-down “V”, you can comfortably watch films, give presentations, view collections of images.
- More space for hardware components
- Better keyboard and more powerful hardware
- Usually a little more difficult
- Tablet cannot be used individually
Processing of the hinges (for cheap models)
In addition, 360 ° convertibles are also a bit more powerful because hardware components can also be accommodated in the keyboard. The fixed keyboard is usually more comfortable to use, especially when you have to write longer texts.
2-in-1 Convertible Laptops: Purchase Criteria
In the following we would like to show you the factors you can use to compare and rate convertibles. This will make it easier for you to decide which one is right for you.
In summary, these are:
- Dimensions / Weight / Casing
- Hard Disk
- Connections / Camera
- Battery life
The following paragraphs go into more detail about the individual criteria and how you can classify them.
Dimensions / Weight / Casing
Depending on whether you are often on the move or whether you mainly use your convertible in your own four walls, weight and dimensions are more or less important. High-quality convertibles, which consist of an aluminum housing, tend to be a little heavier than cheap ones made of plastic.
The built-in hardware does not affect the weight quite as significantly. Just because the convertible has very powerful hardware doesn’t mean that it has to be very heavy.
The housing and its stand are very important for a secure stand. Since the display is heavier than the keyboard in most cases, it can happen that the convertible slips. With high-quality convertibles, the stand is usually better and the convertible is more stable.
Convertibles with a 360 ° hinge do not have the negative point of slipping because the display is fixed to the keyboard anyway.
Very important if you want or have to use your device a lot on the go. Aluminum housings, which can withstand more on the go, are unfortunately heavier than plastic
Depends more on the material than on the hardware
Affects weight and stance. High-quality devices usually have more stable stands
The processor is the heart of the convertible. It is also known as the CPU (Central Processing Unit). It performs arithmetic operations and also controls other parts of the convertible. Data is entered, processed and then output again at the end. The processor only understands data in binary code (zero and one). Therefore all information has to be converted into binary code.
The most important properties of a CPU are the number of cores and the clock frequency. The more cores a processor has, the more instructions can be processed simultaneously. The clock frequency indicates how fast the commands can be executed. It is usually given in GHz (gigahertz).
A processor also includes a control unit. This control unit stores and reads data from the working memory. Therefore the type and the maximum clock frequency of the RAM are influenced by the processor.
Most processors already have an integrated graphics unit. This is completely sufficient for normal Windows operation.
The main memory is the link between the CPU and the hard disk. The main memory is also known as RAM (Random Access Memory).
The connection between CPU and main memory is much faster than that between CPU and hard disk. The main memory has the task of storing data that have just been processed by the processor, or it loads data from the hard disk that will be processed shortly.
This makes the system much faster. Basically, a distinction can be made between different types of RAM. There are so-called DDR3 and DDR4 memory. The speed difference is not decisive, however.
Nowadays you should make sure that there is no less than 4 GB of RAM in your convertible. We’d even recommend using 8GB. This does not make the convertible slower, even if several applications are running at the same time.
What should be considered, in most cases you can no longer upgrade RAM, or it is very time-consuming. Therefore, you should make sure that the desired amount of RAM is already installed when you buy it.
You can save files, music and films on the hard drive. But the operating system is also stored on it. For most convertibles, the manufacturers use a fast SSD hard drive.
In addition to speed, this also has an advantage in terms of volume. We would recommend that you buy a convertible that has an SSD with at least 250 GB. This not only speeds up the system start, but also everyday work with the convertible.
There are also HDD hard drives. These are cheaper, but also a lot slower.
Connections / Camera
The connections that your convertible offers you shouldn’t be neglected either. The most important ones are certainly a (mini) DisplayPort, various USB connections, a card reader and a connection for headphones and a microphone.
The camera is also very important for many users. The quality depends on the type and megapixels of the camera. Some manufacturers advertise with particularly beautiful and realistic photos and videos. Our opinion is that the integrated camera is certainly sufficient for “spontaneous” photos or video calls. Most convertibles are not designed for professional photos.
The display is one of the most important points to keep in mind. The best convertible won’t do you much good if the screen is of very poor quality.
First you have to decide on a certain display diagonal. This is usually given in inches. Of course, this also determines the size of the case. There are also different display resolutions. The more pixels the display has, the clearer and better the representation.
There are also different display types. There is a matt display on the one hand and a high-gloss one on the other. There is no general answer to the question of which is the better. It’s mainly a matter of taste.
Still, there are some objective facts. The picture on the glossy screen is particularly brilliant because the surface is very smooth. The viewing angle is usually much better than with conventional displays.
This is particularly noticeable in games and videos. The big disadvantage, however, is that the display can be very reflective in unfavorable sunlight.
The matte display looks rather milky and pale. You can also work outdoors without any problems. But that’s the only advantage. The colors are a lot better on the glossy display.
The battery life determines how long you can use your convertible on the go. Of course, it makes a huge difference whether you play games, for example, or just quickly read through a newspaper. Depending on the use, the battery life can of course shrink.
Some convertibles also have an extra battery in the docking keyboard. If you connect the tablet to the keyboard, you have even more battery power.
