FAQ's: DECT Phones
What is a DECT Phone?
A DECT telephone is what comes closest to a normal house telephone. DECT actually means something like, Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications, i.e. a cordless in-house telephone.
The DECT standard was first introduced in 1993 and defines how radio signals are transmitted, namely wirelessly. Frequencies in the range 1870 to 1900 MHz are the norm in Europe.
An important feature of the DECT telephone is that it can only work within the range of its base station. Otherwise the wireless transmission cannot be completed and no telephone contact can be established.
The DECT telephone only works as long as it is within range of its base station.
The DECT telephones are therefore often referred to as “cordless but fixed” telephones, as you should never move away from the base station over a long distance.
What is the range and use of a DECT telephone?
As already mentioned, you should always stay close to your base station with your DECT phone so as not to lose phone contact. The distances between the base stations often vary.
In the open air, distances of over 250 meters are typical, whereas in buildings it can be over at 50 meters. This depends entirely on the different manufacturers and should be asked before buying.
DECT telephones are often used in companies and businesses. The reason for this is that the respective employees are always available. For this purpose, the associated employees are provided with a trouser DECT telephone as long as they work in the respective company.
What security concerns are there with a DECT telephone?
Of course, as with many digital products of our time, there are certain security concerns. This is also the case with DECT telephones, where radiation in particular seems to be an acute issue.
However, this is not a straightforward matter. Many researchers and scientists disagree as to whether the rays from a DECT telephone pose a health risk or not.
The Federal Office for Radiation Protection in Germany classifies the DECT telephone as “not harmful to health”. Nevertheless, you have to make a decision for yourself and find out whether and how this type of radiation can affect your body.
Another way to avoid this risk is to use a low-radiation DECT phone.
Advantages & Disadvantages of DECT Phones
Now that we have already given you some interesting and important information about a DECT telephone, in this section we would like to summarize the advantages and disadvantages of a DECT telephone.
After that, you should be well informed about what to expect when buying a DECT telephone.
- easily replaceable
- not the latest evolutionary stage
- not a futuristic design
Of course, it depends again on your personal preferences, how important the various aspects of the DECT telephone are to you. Should you nevertheless decide against buying a DECT telephone, we have selected some alternatives to the DECT telephone for you in the next section.
DECT Phones Alternatives
Although the DECT telephone has its raison d’être, there are of course also useful and usable alternatives that can replace it if necessary. One possible alternative is, for example, its predecessor, the wired phone.
Although this device may have an older origin, there are still many households that still use wired telephones.
It would primarily address the issue of radiation since, as mentioned, it is connected to the base station by a cord. If you are not sure about this, you can use this alternative.
The smartphone is an alternative to the DECT telephone, but it also costs many times as much.
Another alternative that will surely spring to mind is the smartphone. This device is also not on the same level as the DECT telephone in the evolution of telephones. Unlike the wired phone, the smartphone is one evolutionary step further.
It has numerous advantages over the DECT telephone. The problem with radiation reappears here, however.
When buying a smartphone, you also have to reckon with significant price surcharges, which often exceed the price of a DECT phone by four to ten times. So it all depends on what you would like to use your DECT phone for.
In our next section, we will show you which purchase criteria can still be decisive.
DECT Phones: Purchase Criteria
In the following we will show you which aspects you can use to decide between the multitude of possible DECT phones.
The criteria you can use to make your purchase decision are as follows:
- Call quality
In the following paragraphs we explain to you what the individual criteria mean and what is important when making a purchase.
As already mentioned above, these cordless DECT telephones work with radio radiation technology. You can only make calls with your cordless phone within a certain radius around the base station.
If the distance to your base station becomes too great, the current telephone connection will be interrupted or a new telephone connection cannot be established.
As you can probably guess, depending on the different model, there are different distances to how far you can go from your base station without losing the connection.
The high-quality devices often even bring it to a distance of over 50 meters inside a building and outside of a distance of over 300 meters. Cheaper devices cannot do this by a long way and you have to reckon with significant losses.
With the use of an amplifier, also known as a repeater, the distance can be expanded and lengthened in a certain way.
So you can see that the range is a decisive factor when it comes to product selection and the purchase decision. It is therefore best to ask directly in the store and get all the important information there. Of course, you should also be clear about the purposes for which you want to use your DECT telephone.
As with most technical devices, the DECT telephone does not come with the packaging alone but also brings other supporting products with it.
These products vary from manufacturer to manufacturer and are therefore an important and decisive purchase criterion.
Many of the newer DECT telephones have a wide variety of options and functions. We have listed some of them for you in the list below.
- Calendar function
- Answering System
- Call forwarding
- Phone book
- Internet access
- Speed dial
These functions increase the feeling of satisfaction significantly and you should therefore find out which additional functions your DECT phone has that you would like to buy. To do this, you can of course just look on the Internet, but you can also ask the retailer in the electronics store about it.
The battery of your DECT phone is of course another important factor.
With a better battery, you will be able to talk to your conversation partner for longer, although the average battery life will rarely be completely used up with just one phone call.
Still, it’s a crucial factor that you shouldn’t neglect under any circumstances.
Typically, you can make calls with a DECT phone for nine hours at a time.
Another interesting fact in this regard is that cheaper devices often have a better battery life than more expensive DECT phones.
The average battery life of a DECT phone is around nine hours of talk and 90-300 hours of standby. In any case, enough time for a detailed discussion.
Since the product to be considered is a telephone, the quality of the call is of course a decisive factor.
This topic has been brought forward strongly by the private sector in recent years and has developed enormously.
The problem with this purchase criterion is that you often only notice after the purchase whether the quality of the conversation corresponds to what you imagine.
So maybe just ask whether you can test the call quality yourself in the shop, or whether the seller can guarantee that if you are dissatisfied, you have the right to return the device for a certain period of time.
Since a DECT telephone is connected to the base unit without a physical connection, a connection between the telephone and the base station must of course still be established in some way.
This is done via a radio link that emits high-frequency electromagnetic radiation as a side effect.
There is great disagreement on this point among leading researchers in the field. Some of them say that this radiation can be dangerous to health, others, however, vehemently deny it.
In the end it is a question of faith on your part and you have to know whether and what radiation you want to expose yourself to.
