Frequently Asked Questions: DVD Players

What is a DVD Player?

A DVD player is an electronic playback device that can play back commercially available DVDs. First and foremost, a DVD player is used to play movie DVDs. For this reason, these players are usually connected directly to a television. However, they can play more than just DVDs. These devices are downward compatible and also support normal audio CDs. In this case, however, there is no video output, only audio.

Current DVD players are not limited to original CDs or DVDs. Rewritable data carriers can also be used. This can expand the field of application enormously. This has also been proven in a test by test institutes. Depending on the model and manufacturer, VCDs and SVCDs are also supported. In addition, compressed film content in the formats

  • DivX,
  • Xvid,
  • MP4,
  • Nero Digital and
  • WMV9

can be played back. But also for music playback, DVD players can play files in MP3 and WMA format according to a test and comparison. In addition, you can also display digital photos in JPEG or JPG format in many cases.

Visually, a DVD player is reminiscent of a traditional hi-fi component. Meanwhile, these devices are built very compact and therefore find their place mainly under the TV. These devices are connected either via

  • a SCART cable,
  • RCA jacks for composite video and a left and right audio signal,
  • an S-Video cable and
  • an HDMI cable.

The connections are usually found on the back of the device.

The front of a DVD player consists of an LED or TFT display and the most important function keys. As a rule, a DVD player is controlled by remote control. In addition, the most common front loaders still have a drawer for holding a DVD.

How does a DVD Player work?

For a test and comparison, it is important to know how a DVD player works. Please note that we have not performed a test ourselves. However, we are guided by the information provided by well-known test institutes that have put these devices through their paces.

A DVD player can manage optical storage media. These are circular plastic discs with a reflective layer. A laser is used to read and process the data on a DVD or CD. DVD players require a laser with a short wavelength to read DVDs.

The data rate of a player is decisive for sufficient data transmission. If a DVD is read at single speed, the player achieves a data transfer rate of 11.08 Mbit/s here. Incidentally, this corresponds to nine times the CD reading speed. During data decoding, error correction takes place via an elaborate mathematical process.

The processed picture and sound data are ultimately made available to the connected devices via the available outputs.

Advantages of DVD Players

The DVD player represents the actual successor of the video recorder. DVDs can be archived in a particularly space-saving way. You can set up a complete video library in a very small space. In addition, DVDs convince with a very good picture and sound quality. However, this also depends on the connected end devices.

You can watch movies in HD quality and Dolby Digital or Dolby Sourround quality. Very popular is the playback via a surround system, which conjures up a real cinema feeling. If you want high-quality home theater playback, then a DVD player can be the right solution.

Advantages:

  • good picture and sound quality,
  • compact dimensions,
  • DVDs can be archived in a space-saving way,
  • support surround technologies,
  • many connection possibilities,
  • already quite inexpensive available.

Types of DVD Players

For a test and comparison or a comparison, you should also inform yourself about the different DVD players. Numerous independent testers have compared these devices and presented the special features in a study.

Classic DVD Player

Independent testers have put simple DVD players under the microscope in a product test and comparison. These are very compact devices with which you can play conventional DVDs, but also music CDs. They are pure stand-alone devices with different equipment standards.

However, the models located in the lower price segment cannot play all formats and also show weaknesses in the playback of rewritable data carriers.

Advantages:

  • Good picture and sound quality,
  • compact dimensions,
  • reasonably priced.

Disadvantages:

  • no HDMI port,
  • few supported formats,
  • rarely read rewritable media,
  • no HD or Full HD.

Professional DVD Player

For a practical test and comparison, the higher-quality devices will also be used for analysis. These devices support a variety of formats and offer practical special features, such as a resume memory. For example, if you interrupt a movie in between, the DVD player remembers the spot so that you can continue watching the movie seamlessly later.

Likewise, these devices have numerous connection options, and the latest HDMI port is not to be missed.

Advantages:

  • good picture and sound quality,
  • many formats,
  • Special features,
  • HD-capable,
  • current connection possibilities .

Disadvantages:

  • not quite as inexpensive,
  • no Full HD.

Portable DVD Player

For a test and comparison, after a juxtaposition, the portable DVD player must not be forgotten. These are relatively simple models that do not support all formats. Nevertheless, you can play DVDs and CDs on them without any problems. It is interesting that these players are equipped with an integrated screen.

Therefore, they are mainly suitable for mobile use. These players can be powered by AC power, but also by battery.

Advantages:

  • sufficient picture and sound quality,
  • with integrated monitor,
  • mobile use,
  • partly inexpensive.

Disadvantages:

  • few connection options,
  • if the screen is defective, the player often cannot be used further,
  • no Full HD.

How are DVD Players tested?

The so-called test criteria also play an important role for a test and comparison. We did not test any device. Nevertheless, we would like to briefly present the most important criteria.

Supported Formats

The DVD players listed in our comparison table support the most diverse formats after inspection and control. These include at least

  • DVD,
  • CD,
  • Xvid,
  • MP3,
  • WMA and
  • JPEG.

I/O

According to an investigation, the current DVD players are connected to a modern flat-screen TV via HDMI cable. However, there are still inexpensive devices that only have the traditional SCART connection as well as RCA connection.

For a test and comparison, it is important that a modern device has at least one HDMI port in any case. The test winners meet these requirements.

Upscaling

If you have a good DVD player, it can also display low-resolution videos in high quality. In this case, video upscaling ensures that the low video resolution is upscaled. You then turn a normal video into an HD video, for example.

What should I look for when buying a DVD player?

For a test and comparison of DVD players, you should also know the most important purchase criteria. Even though we have not conducted such a test ourselves, we would like to present the following criteria to you.

Type of DVD Player

If you only rarely want to watch movie DVDs after a suitability test, then a simple DVD player is perfectly sufficient. Ambitious movie freaks who don’t want to do without a home theater feeling should already reach for professional devices.

However, if you want to watch a movie on the go, then perhaps the portable devices are the right choice.

Top or Front Loader

Most DVD players today are offered as front loaders. Here, a small drawer opens in the front of the panel and waits for the DVD or CD. There are only a few top loaders on the market. The disadvantage is that you can’t use these devices in a rack, a sideboard or in a stack with other hifi devices. Due to the upward opening drawer, top loaders always require a bit more space.

Audio Formats

You may also want to use rewritable DVDs or CDs in your personal evaluation. In this case, your new DVD player should also support these formats. The more formats the device provides, the more flexible you can use it later.

USB

Some DVD players have an integrated USB port. You can use it to connect a memory stick with photos or video material and watch or listen to the content. As a test result from independent testers has shown, most devices today have a USB port.

Price-Performance Ratio

Even though most DVD players have a certain visual similarity and congruence, not only the technology is different, but also the price. After a personal consideration, you should test beforehand which functions are particularly important to you. Even a simple DVD player, for example, can convince with a solid build quality and high durability. Look at what you get based on the price-performance ratio.

DVD Player Accessories

If you have decided on a DVD player after a test and comparison, you should also find out about the accessories you need.

SCART cable
Some DVD players are equipped with a SCART connector. Through it, you can also use an older TV with SCART socket. In this case, you will need a solid SCART cable as an accessory.

HDMI cable
As already explained, modern DVD players and flat-screen TVs are nowadays only connected via an HDMI cable. If this is not in the scope of delivery, then you should get such a cable.

Wireless HDMI
A clever alternative is also the connection via Wireless HDMI Adapter: This allows the DVD player to be set up and operated at another location. This is interesting, for example, if the TV is mounted on the ceiling and hanging down connection cables would disturb the look in the room.

DVD Player Alternatives

For a test and comparison, we would also like to briefly introduce you to the possible alternatives to a DVD player. We did not test these devices ourselves, but relied on information from independent testers.

Blu-ray player
Of course, the successor to the DVD player should not be forgotten here. A Blu-ray player is backwards compatible, so you can also play conventional DVDs with it. However, most high-quality Blu-ray players are still quite expensive.

Streaming services
Streaming services represent a strong competition for DVD players. These online platforms are virtual video libraries where you can watch the blockbusters you want at any time. The only prerequisite is, of course, fast Internet access and a TV or decoder that supports the desired service.
