All You Need To Know About Gaming Monitors
What makes a gaming monitor so special?
The modern world of video games has changed a lot in recent years. We are now enjoying breathtaking graphics, some of which look amazingly real. In order to reproduce this, a corresponding monitor is required in addition to a powerful computer. This is exactly what gaming monitors are designed for – designed for the playback of high-resolution content.
The screens of gaming monitors consist of so-called liquid crystals, which display the individual pixels. Each monitor has a certain number of these pixels – the more, the higher the resolution. The combination of a powerful graphics card and a high-resolution gaming monitor forms the basis for enjoying modern games in all their glory. Nowadays every gaming monitor has a Full HD resolution of at least 1920 x 1080 pixels. If you take a little more money in your hand, you can now get so-called 4K gaming monitors with a resolution of at least 3840 x 2160 pixels.
Another feature that sets gaming monitors apart is their fast response time. In the case of conventional PC monitors, the fast-paced nature of video games often appear a bit rough because the pixels simply cannot react so quickly. This is exactly the problem that gaming monitors can counteract by adjusting their pixels within milliseconds.
The bottom line with a gaming monitor in the year is always the reproduction of a high quality image. Various properties interact, such as the resolution and the refresh rate, which we will discuss later. Only if your monitor works optimally with your graphics card can you dive into the world of modern computer games and really enjoy it.
The advantages of a gaming monitor
Most computer games have long been more than just having fun, but more about competing with other players. In order to survive in the competition, the technical prerequisites are crucial in addition to your own skills. If you use a conventional PC monitor with a slow response time and a low refresh rate, you are clearly at a disadvantage compared to players with a powerful gaming monitor. It is the combination of a strong graphics card and a fast gaming monitor that forms the basis for the quick reactions in computer games, which often decide whether to win or lose.
For this purpose, many modern gaming monitors are equipped with special boards that are manufactured by graphics card manufacturers such as AMD or NVIDIA. This allows your monitor to synchronize with your graphics card and generate the most precise refresh rate possible. Your monitor can automatically switch to the corresponding mode, which is required for optimal performance of the respective game.
Special technologies that are often installed in modern gaming monitors are also advantageous. They protect your eyes, for example, on long sessions in front of the monitor, which has a positive influence on your ability to concentrate. Other functions allow you to brighten certain areas of the screen, which is especially helpful to identify opponents in dark corners more quickly. In some situations, this can be your decisive advantage.
In order to make a sensible purchase decision, we would like to inform you about the disadvantages of a gaming monitor. We have therefore clearly listed the individual advantages and disadvantages for you:
The main features of gaming monitors
The variety of gaming monitors on the market makes it understandable if you have lost the overview. Whether it should be a 144 hz monitor, a 4K gaming monitor, a curved gaming monitor or a gaming monitor with 27-inches depends not only on your own taste, but of course also on your wallet – more expensive is always possible.
This section is designed to help you figure out which gaming monitor is right for you. We explain which properties you should pay particular attention to.
1. How much does a "good" gaming monitor cost?
The upper limit is open for gaming monitors. If you choose a device from the upper price ranges, your account can be quickly relieved by several thousand euros. Therefore, you should set a fixed limit when choosing a monitor, otherwise it will be more difficult from the start. However, do not save in the wrong place. The monitor is usually the hardware of a gaming setup that has been in use the longest. Good monitors with the right size and equipment can be found on the market for as little as 150 dollar. If you can live without individual gimmicks and features, it gets cheaper.
2. How big should the monitor be?
As with all technical devices that come with a screen, the diagonal is specified in inches. The exclusion criterion for many gamers today is a screen size of less than 24-inches. These models are no longer considered competitive.
Screens with a size between 24 and 27-inches are best suited for gaming, since they allow for an optimal seating distance to the screen. It is best to determine from the start whether you want a 24 or 27-inch gaming monitor. Anything bigger (31-Inch Monitor or 34-Inch Monitor) could be a strain on eyes and neck. Make sure that the height of the device in the product description is given once with and once without a stand.
Whether a curved gaming monitor is right for you depends primarily on whether you like the shape at all. However, immersion starts with curved monitors. A curved monitor puts less strain on the eyes during long sessions in front of the screen than on conventional models. In terms of price, they are usually above the “normal” screens. However, the prices continue to go down.
3. What about the refresh rate?
You should not underestimate the effectiveness of the monitor’s Hz. The refresh rate ensures a fluid-looking image and is therefore essential for a good game flow – especially in fast games. The trend is in the direction of 144 Hz monitors. The 60 Hz variant is still often offered and also bought, but is being pushed out of the market bit by bit.
4. The response time
The response time describes the speed at which the LCD crystals can build up a new image on your screen. In technical jargon, it is called image formation time.
For gamers, the response time is an extremely important criterion, especially in fast shooters like Counter Strike, Overwatch, Battlefield or Fortnite. With a slow response time, frustration is inevitable with such games. The good thing is that today’s monitors with their modern panels have fast response times.
Most gaming monitors have a response time between 1-5 ms.
It is often the case that a lack of response time is confused with the input lag, which, however, has almost no meaning with this type of monitor. The input lag stands for the time delay from the input of a signal to the construction of the actual image and occurs primarily in TVs and old monitors. This makes it more important for consoles like PlayStation 4 or Xbox One.
5. The type of panel makes a big difference (TN, PVA, MVA and IPS)
The heart of every monitor is the panel (the actual display). There are four different basic types:
- TN panel (twisted nematic)
- IPS panel (in-plane switching)
- PVA panel (patterned vertical alignment)
- MVA panel (multi-domain vertical alignment)
A TN panel (twisted nematic) is inexpensive, which is used in both monitors and televisions and has dominated the market for a long time. In the meantime, however, it has got company. This is due to the somewhat higher quality PVA (patterned vertical alignment) and IPS (in-plane switching) panels, which have a significantly lower viewing angle dependency. This means that with these types of panels it is not so important which position you look at the screen to get a good picture.
The MVA panels (Multi-Domain Vertical Alignment) offer not only excellent viewing angle stability, but also excellent contrast and good color reproduction. However, they usually have a slower response time and are therefore only suitable to a limited extent for fast games.
6. The interfaces on the monitor
The standard VGA input is hardly used anymore. This was increasingly replaced by digital connections such as DVI, HDMI or display port. While the display port is mainly used in the IT industry, the HDMI connection has largely been developed only for consumer electronics. Almost all graphics cards now have a DVI and HDMI connection. As far as picture quality is concerned, there is hardly any difference between the two connections. If a screen has only VGA connections, you should avoid it. With this analog interface, you would get a poor response time and a lower image quality.
What resolution should a gaming monitor have?
Ideally, you should always try to operate the monitor in the maximum possible resolution and keep the frame rates as high as possible (60 frames per second and higher). If you don’t own a very strong gaming PC, the full HD standard (1,920 x 1,080 pixels), which has been common for many years, is currently recommended.
Full HD is still sharp enough, especially with screen sizes up to 24-inches. Most current graphics cards already have enough power for the next higher step, WQHD (2,560 x 1,440 pixels), which ensures a sharp picture with 27 and 30-inch monitors. Games in UHD or 4K are still very performance-hungry and require a strong graphics card.
The Ultrawide format with the aspect ratio of 21: 9 is also popular with players, but is not yet fully supported by all games.
How far should I sit from the monitor?
The bigger the monitor, the farther away you should sit to be able to view the whole area of the monitor display without moving your head.
In general, we recommend a minimum distance of 50 cm for comparatively small diagonals such as 24-inches. As a rule of thumb for determining the ideal seat distance, the display diagonal in inches multiplied by 1.2 to 1.5. With a 27-inch display, this results in a distance of around 80 cm.
What are AMD FreeSync and Nvidia G-Sync?
More and more gaming monitors have in-built FreeSync or G-Sync image synchronization techniques. These ensure that the refresh rate is always compared with the calculated frame rate of the graphics card. The advantage of the technology is immense, because with activated synchronization the scrolling always looks smooth, even if the frame rate fluctuates, as it happens in many video games.
Weaker computers also benefit from this – the tearing of the image is prevented, which is usually remedied by V-Sync and often accompanied by a slight input delay.
The crux of the matter: FreeSync only works with AMD graphics cards and G-Sync only with Nvidia graphics cards. Nvidia users are hit harder because G-Sync monitors are always more expensive than the FreeSync equivalent.
How are gaming monitors checked?
In recent years, more and more manufacturers have entered the gaming niche. Accordingly, more and more dedicated monitors for players can be found in the test laboratories. Overall, game monitors are not judged differently from conventional office or multimedia monitors.
The image quality is the basis and therefore crucial for the final evaluation. A good gaming monitor must offer a good ratio of resolution and screen size. In addition, colors must be reproduced realistically and with high contrast. There are also smaller aspects such as the visual stability when viewed from the side, the luminosity of the panel and the uniformity of the illumination, which can vary from device to device even with the same model number.
If the image quality is right, the performance of the monitor becomes the focus of the testers. A good game monitor should have the shortest possible response time. Most cheaper gaming monitors rely on the somewhat dusty, but rapidly fast TN (Twisted Nematic) panel technology. However, this is usually accompanied by compromises in terms of color representation and viewing angle stability.
Gaming monitors with an IPS panel perform much better in terms of colors, but react more slowly. With clever hardware tricks like Overdrive, the response times are extremely fast and no delays can be determined.
While the response times are generally at a high level, the differences in the refresh rates are large. Most gaming monitors up to 300 dollars use 60 Hz panels just like conventional displays. However, more expensive models and those with AMD FreeSync or G-Sync already achieve significantly higher frame rates up to 240 Hz. If the connected PC is able to calculate the corresponding frame rate, 120 Hz and more are in the eyes of the testers a strong plus for the gaming experience. The image simply looks smoother and mouse movements far more precise. In addition, the annoying motion blur is greatly reduced.
The ergonomics of game monitors are important, which is why gaming models without an adjustable stand are criticized by many product reviewers. Electricity consumption is measured and evaluated. Compared to office monitors, gaming monitors are often neglected here, but still remain within a tolerable range.
