Frequently Asked Questions: Milk Frothers

What is a milk frother?

A milk frother is a special kitchen appliance with which we can produce milk foam. This aid has also become very popular in households in recent years.

The reason for this is the delicious Italian coffee delights such as cappuccino or latte macchiato. While these hot drinks are prepared with a milk foam made from hot steam in the cafés, battery-operated, electric and manual milk frothers are available at home.

With the exception of the battery-operated milk frother, all other milk frothers require a container in which a certain amount of milk can be poured. In order to produce good milk foam, the milk must be warmed up slightly. A sieve or induction heat creates light air bubbles on the surface of the milk, which are later skimmed off and create the milk foam.

With the battery-operated milk frother, the warmed milk only needs to be whisked through and can then be poured off. We would like to take a closer look at the functionality in the next chapter.

How does a milk frother work?

First, we need to explain how we get milk frothy. To do this, the protein and fat molecules in the milk only need to be mixed with air. However, since these molecules are quite stubborn, we have to heat the milk. Only heated milk can be turned into milk foam.

To make delicious milk foam with a battery-operated milk frother, we first need a small jug or pot with a little milk.

We heat these at a temperature of 50 to 60 degrees Celsius. With the help of the whisk we beat small air bubbles into our heated milk.

After a few minutes, a fine foam has formed on top of the milk.

We can skim it off and use it to decorate our hot drink.

A hand-operated milk frother is usually a stainless steel jug in which the milk can be heated.

A sieve inside is set in motion by a pumping movement and creates the milk foam in this way. Electrically operated milk frothers usually work with induction.

The milk foam is created automatically due to the heated milk. These induction milk frothers have an induction motor, which is required for the frothing process. All we have to do is plug these devices into a socket.

Milk frothers with induction work similarly to a kettle, but are much quieter.

After all, the milk must not boil. After the milk foam has set, the hot milk for the drink is poured off and then decorated with the milk foam.
To get a perfect Latte Macciato, the hot espresso has to be poured into the glass at the end. It is important that the espresso is much hotter than the milk foam so that it can settle better.

What are the advantages & use cases of a milk frother?

In our milk frother test we would also like to introduce you to the applications and advantages. First of all, it must be noted that not everyone is willing to pay a lot of money for a cappuccino or latte macchiato in a café. Nevertheless, many do not want to do without these delicious coffee delights.

With your own milk frother you can easily prepare such a drink yourself. A cappuccino consists of one third espresso, one third milk and one third milk foam. The milk crown can also be dedorated with cocoa powder. The cappuccino is served in a large, thick-walled cup.

The latte macchiato is served in a glass. There we can best see the three different layers of espresso, milk and milk foam. Incidentally, most types of milk, such as whole milk, long-life milk, low-fat milk and lactose-free milk, are suitable for making milk foam. A very fine-pored foam can be derived from this.

With your own milk frother you can make Italian coffee delights at a particularly low price. We will come back to the different types of milk frothers.

Advantages of milk frothers

  • inexpensive production of milk foam,
  • easy to use,
  • Milk frothers are easy to clean,
  • fast preparation time,
  • can be used flexibly for many hot beverages

Types of Milk Frothers

Before you decide on a specific milk frother, such as the milk frother test winner, we would like to introduce you to the different types.

Battery-Operated Milk Frother

The battery-operated milk frother are among the cheapest milk frothers. These consist of a plastic handle that contains a small electric motor and the required batteries.

At the lower end there is a wire wound whisk that is set in motion by the motor. This milk frother is put into operation via an on / off switch.

We only need a small milk can with warm or hot milk and hold our whisk in it. After a short time, we can see how the milk becomes frothy on the surface.

It’s nice that we can also prepare other delicious drinks with such a milk frother.

This whisk is often used to stir cocoa powder without lumps, for example. You can also use it to prepare other mixed drinks. Even bartenders rely on these functional aids.

Another advantage is that we are not tied to a power cord and can even use this stick skimmer on the go. We can rinse the whisk under running water after each use. This ensures easy cleaning. If we have a model with an attachable whisk, this attachment can even be cleaned in the dishwasher.

Due to this simple handling alone, such a model can consistently be called the milk frother test winner.

Advantages of the battery operated milk frother

  • Can be used flexibly and not tied to a power cord,
  • easy to use,
  • easy cleaning,
  • can also be used for many other mixed drinks,
  • inexpensive

Disadvantages of the battery operated milk frother

  • batteries are required for operation,
  • Housing not waterproof,
  • Preparation is done manually,
  • a bit time consuming

Manual Milk Frother

The hand-operated milk frother is an Italian invention. The traditional models from Bialetti are particularly well known. These are usually insulated aluminum pots with a handle. The most important utensil is the lid with a movable sieve. With these milk frothers we have to move the sieve up and down using a knob on the lid. The sieve works like a cylinder in the pot and, through its movement, creates air bubbles in the hot milk.

The milk foam is created by small air bubbles and is ready after a few minutes. Some manufacturers even use a double sieve so that the milk foam can be produced more quickly.

One advantage is that the aluminum pot can also be used to heat the milk on the stove top. Basically, it is a milk pot with a lid, with which we can heat our milk on one side and create milk foam with a pumping movement.

The only disadvantage is that these closed pots are opaque and we therefore do not know exactly when the foam is ready. On the other hand, these devices impress with their easy handling without mains power.

There are now some manual milk frothers that consist of a glass jug. This is of course very sensitive to shock. The milk pot is easy to clean. We can put all of the components in the dishwasher. Some of these hand-operated milk frothers can even be heated on an induction hob.

Advantages of the hand-operated milk frother

  • no power connection required,
  • Milk foam is generated by pumping movement,
  • easy to use,
  • easy cleaning,
  • Milk pot can be heated directly on stove,
  • Aluminum pots offer high stability

Disadvantages of the hand-operated milk frother

  • sometimes quite expensive,
  • Opaque aluminum pots do not show when the milk foam is ready,
  • Glass jugs, on the other hand, are sensitive to shock,
  • Preparation a bit time consuming

Induction Milk Frother

The models with induction belong to the fully automatic luxury milk frothers. These are mostly cylindrical containers that have to be connected to the nearest socket via a power cable. After filling the milk, delicious milk foam is created after a short time at the push of a button.

In the first step, the filled milk is heated. After the right temperature has been reached, milk foam production begins. With the help of induction technology, an alternating magnetic field is used to heat the milk.

This procedure is comparable to that of a modern induction cooker, only much smaller. A small frothing spiral turns inside to create the milk foam. This blows air under the hot milk.

As soon as the milk froth is ready, the electric induction milk frother switches off. Most professional devices today rely on induction technology, since only this is able to produce particularly energy-efficient milk foam in a very short time. It is interesting that these milk frothers consist of two parts. In addition to the cylinder, there is usually a base station with a power connection underneath. Similar to an electric kettle, we can lift off the cylinder after preparing the foam and easily pour the contents into a cup or glass.

We have to be careful when cleaning. Understandably, we cannot clean these electronic devices in the dishwasher. However, the mostly coated cylinders can be rinsed very easily by hand.

The on / off switch and the floor contacts should not come into contact with water. We also have to clean the foam spiral on the bottom or on the lid with particular care so as not to damage it. The cleaning effort is therefore a bit cumbersome. In addition, it must be noted that good induction milk frothers work almost silently.

Advantages of the electric induction milk frother

  • fully automatic milk foam production,
  • noiseless operation,
  • energy efficient,
  • quick preparation,
  • The device heats the milk and then produces the milk foam,
  • easy to use

Disadvantages of the electric induction milk frother

  • quite expensive,
  • Mains power connection required,
  • laborious to clean

How are milk frothers tested?

Electrically operated milk frothers require sufficient energy to heat the milk on the one hand and to produce the milk foam via the induction motor on the other. The nominal input power in watts therefore also plays an important role. Most electrically operated milk frothers have an average output of around 500 watts.

Despite this high wattage, the foam can be obtained from hot milk with modern induction technology within a very short time. In this respect, these household appliances are considered to be particularly energy-efficient.

Milk heating without foaming

In our test, we were able to determine that all electric induction milk frothers could only heat the milk without it having to be frothed afterwards. The foam function can be switched off on almost all machines. This is particularly useful if, for example, we want to prepare hot milk without foam. There are enough reasons for this, such as honey milk or warm milk for cocoa.

Understandably, the stick skimmer with whisk is one of the lightest devices. This is followed by the manual milk frothers, which only consist of a stainless steel, aluminum or glass jug with a lid. Here we come to a maximum weight of 500 g.

The electrically operated machines are considerably heavier, whereby the size and capacity must also be taken into account. Low-volume induction milk frothers weigh just under 900 g. The larger models weigh up to around 1.9 kg.

Separate milk heating

Not all milk frothers presented here are able to heat the milk at the push of a button. Separate milk heating is necessary, especially with the manual and battery-operated models, as these do not have a heating system.

In the case of separate milk heating, however, the containers must be sufficiently designed so that they can be heated, for example, on a hotplate or induction plate. Many manual milk frothers therefore have a jug or a saucepan that we can put on a hotplate without hesitation.

In the past, to use a battery-powered whisk, we had to resort to a separate container with hot milk in it.

Automatic switch-off

With the electrically operated milk frothers from our test, we made sure that the heating system switches off automatically when the desired temperature is reached. Some devices also switch off by themselves as soon as the milk foam production is reliable.

This function is particularly important as milk can boil over unexpectedly quickly. In this respect, an automatic switch-off plays an important role when buying an electric milk frother.

What do I have to look out for when buying a milk frother?

A wide variety of milk frothers are available on the market. In order to make your choice a little easier, we would like to introduce you to some important purchase criteria in our milk frother test.

Type of Milk Frother

Before you decide on a new milk frother, you should consider whether it should be manual, battery-operated or electrically operated. If you only need milk froth every now and then, a battery-operated milk frother will do just fine. But the manual milk frother with pump technology can also be used for occasional preparations.

However, if you want to produce milk froth regularly and without great effort, then it is worth considering an induction milk frother. These do this work at the push of a button and almost silently. However, you should note that the electrically operated models in particular are usually a bit more expensive. But even with the high-quality manual milk frothers you sometimes have to spend a little more money.

First of all, you need to ask yourself how much frothed milk you need. Single households or couples get by with a smaller container volume, while families or people who have frequent visitors should prefer larger containers or machines. The capacity of the electric and manual milk frothers is on average between 200 ml and 1,000 ml.

Only the stick skimmer with whisk is not tied to any container size. Understandably, however, this should not be too large, as you will then need all the longer to create milk foam.

It is very practical if you can easily remove the container and pour the milk foam directly into the cup or glass from there. When making your selection, make sure that the capacity refers to the entire vessel size. If the airy milk foam is produced, the milk can of course take up a lot more volume.

Modern induction milk frothers can be used for many delicious drinks. For example, if we want to prepare hot honey-milk, we need more heat than with milk foam. For this reason, machines where we can set the temperature individually are advantageous.

This is where the induction devices show their strengths. Thanks to the quick preparation time, we can choose between the desired heat levels within seconds. The generated magnetic field cannot store any heat and does not require any warm-up time. It always offers exactly the right warmth that is desired.

The cold foam function can also be used for a few beverages, such as cocktails or cold cocoa. Unfortunately, the result of this foam consistency is rather satisfactory, as the necessary heat is always required for correct milk foam.

As we have already explained above, the easiest way to clean the battery-operated whiskers or the manual milk frother. While we only have to rinse the whisk under warm water, we can often put the containers of the manual devices in the dishwasher.

It gets more difficult with the electric milk frothers. The electronics must not come into contact with water. For this reason, we have to carefully clean the containers without watering the contacts or switching elements. Likewise, the internal foam spiral or the foam sieve of a milk frother always poses a problem, since it is very sensitive.

Before you buy, find out exactly how much cleaning your milk frother requires.

Of course, handling also plays an important role when buying. Unfortunately, many manufacturers promise a lot more than they can actually deliver. It is important to have a good milk frother

  • has clearly labeled controls,
  • is self-explanatory,
  • can stand safe and stable,
  • works quietly,
  • creates milk foam reliably and quickly,
  • has insulated handles because of the heat,
  • is easy to clean and
  • does not spill when pouring.

Milk Frother Accessories

If you are interested in a milk frother, you will certainly want to know whether you still need one or the other accessory. These accessories are primarily aimed at the type of milk frother.

Important spare parts

If you have an electric milk frother, some components can become damaged over time. You can find replacements for this at most renowned brand manufacturers. These include, for example

  • Replacement whisk,
  • Sieve inserts,
  • Replacement lid,
  • Foam nozzles,
  • Inlet hoses or
  • Replacement milk container.

Before buying, make sure that the replacement parts really fit your electric milk frother. Incidentally, you will also find a similar contingent of spare parts with the manual milk frothers. The lids with pump sieves played an important role here. Well-known brand manufacturers also offer these as spare parts.

Cups and glasses

A delicious cappuccino or a latte machiato should be served appropriately. These include, for example, large, thick-walled cappuccino cups and elegant latte machiato glasses. These are available from many well-known manufacturers and in a number of attractive design proposals. If you have visitors or have to entertain a larger group, then you should better stock up on these dishes.

If you have the opportunity, you should perhaps ask in the catering trade. This crockery is available there at particularly good prices. But there are also many ways to order these cups and glasses online at low prices.

Detergents for electric milk frothers

As we mentioned before, cleaning an electric milk frother is often a problem. In particular, integrated milk frothers with a suction hose must always be hygienic. Otherwise bacteria can grow in it. You can purchase a special cleaner for milk frothers and fully automatic coffee machines. In accordance with the enclosed instructions, the milk containers, supply lines, hoses, steam nozzles and beaters can be cleaned particularly thoroughly.

Stand for milk frother

The battery-operated milk frothers usually consist of a motor housing and a whisk. It is very practical if these devices can be stored upright. For this reason, special feet are ideal for such stick frothers. Because it is stored vertically, the whisk can best dry after cleaning.

Milk jug with graduations

The separate milk jugs that can be used for different milk frothers are useful accessories. These jugs have a practical pouring spout and internal graduations. So you can always measure the right amount of milk.

These vessels are made of stainless steel, plastic or glass. The milk foam can be poured in particularly well from there. Even creative foam works of art can be created in this way.

Milk Frother Alternatives

It doesn’t always have to be state-of-the-art milk frothers if you want to create a milk cream for your coffee. The easiest way to create milk foam is to whisk the heated milk in a saucepan with a whisk.

The whisk transports air under the hot milk, which turns into milk foam on the surface. The battery-operated stick skimmer with whisk, for example, takes the same procedure. You don’t have to swing a whisk with this one.

The Pannarello can also be called an alternative to a milk frother. This is a milk foam nozzle with a plastic handle that is mounted directly on a high-quality espresso machine. The milk is frothed in a vessel using hot steam.

Another alternative is the cappuccinatore. This is a milk frother integrated in a fully automatic coffee machine, which sucks up the milk from a tetrapack or a bag via a separate hose. In this process, too, the milk foam is produced using hot steam.
