The Best Power Strips in 2021

Author: Robert Wilson

Electronics & Peripherals Expert

Electricity is essential nowadays. Electric bicycles bring people to work, smartphones organize the lives of their users, and without a computer, email traffic would collapse, as would communication via social networks. Man has become dependent on the permanently flowing current. But there is not always a socket nearby, and if there is, then one slot is usually not enough. The power strip can help here. But which of the myriad models is the right one? You can keep track of things with a test – we have compared the best.

Frequently Asked Questions: Power Strips

What can a modern power strip do and how can you use it optimally?

Electricity has fascinated and inspired people since its discovery. Around 1900 some fantastic experiments were carried out, for example by Nikola Tesla. His famous attempt at violent lightning discharges in 1899 overloaded the Colorado Springs city generator and plunged it into darkness for several days. Today that’s an almost unlikely idea. Tesla himself had set up in the New York Hotel Gerlach in 1893 in order to be able to enjoy the convenience of an elevator and electric light – a rarity at the time.

But at the beginning of the twentieth century many private households in Europe had neither electricity nor electric light. Back then, when streets and buildings were equipped with electric lighting and cities shone in a fantastic bright light at night, people were initially fascinated. Sockets were clearly visible and often placed in the middle of living rooms and libraries. After all, they wanted to show their progressiveness.

Today, both sockets and the socket strip are housed as invisible as possible in order to make living areas and work areas appear neutral and tidy. But in many cases there is no longer any reason to do so. A modern power strip can be stylish and offer a wide range of practical functions.

In its simple design, the socket strip is nothing more than the freely positionable continuation of the socket to which it is connected due to its parallel connection. Of course, it offers additional connection options and meets people’s growing need to operate various electrical devices in parallel. However, a toggle switch for switching the electricity on and off is already an advantage in terms of energy savings. After all, laptops, radios, washing machines and power banks use electricity even when they no longer need them.

But a modern socket strip can do more. Master-slave sockets, products with USB charging options, weatherproof outdoor sockets or the wireless socket strip with remote control – today’s variety of models leaves little to be desired and offers space for individual requirements and ideas. It is therefore all the more important that you consult a test, comparison or study. Only in this way is it possible that you can actually find the best product for your requirements.

The power strip in the test - which model is the best?

First and foremost, your wishes and requirements determine what a socket strip must be able to do. It is not necessarily the best product from a test. The strip that is ideally suited to your requirements can be in the middle of a comparison table, because the ranking in a test only states how well the socket strip performed in relation to the test criteria.

If a proficiency test, experiment or survey has chosen a winner because it has excellently combined master-slave functionality and USB connections, that will not help you if you need a waterproof socket strip for outdoor areas.

Either earthing contact sockets, power switches and surge protection or a stylish aluminum finish and USB connections – the wealth of variants in terms of socket strips is so extensive that you simply have to be clear about what you actually want and need before buying.

A test and comparison can be effective in helping you with this. However, you may have to go through test for test before you discover an evaluation or comparison winner that meets your requirements. We have divided the various bars into two categories so that you can compare the most important types.

There are, on the one hand, simple socket strip models with or without a switch that only offer a certain number of sockets for Euro plugs and safety plugs. With these helpers you can comfortably operate several consumers in parallel, such as a computer and printer or several fairy lights on the Christmas tree. If a switch is integrated, you can save electricity with one movement and switch off several loads at the same time. This is a security aspect that should not be underestimated.

After all, devices without electricity cannot short-circuit or start to burn. Even with this simple variant of the socket strip, effective surge protection and child safety devices can be built in.

The prices here mostly fluctuate between five and 30 dollars. If you want a stylish aluminum version, a high-quality bar can easily cost 50 dollars. As you can see, a seemingly primitive device can have many options. It is therefore essential that you consult a comparison, test or investigation so that you choose, for example, the particularly safe and not the expensive product that might compromise on safety.

On the other hand, there is the functional socket strip. This includes in particular the master-slave socket strip, which is invaluable when operating desktop PCs with extensive peripherals. Without an active consumer at the master socket, the slave sockets are completely switched off. By switching on the PC at the master socket, you can ensure that the printer, scanner, monitor and other devices receive power.

This avoids excessive costs for devices on standby or loads that consume electricity even when they are switched off. Another functional product type is, for example, the wireless socket strip, which often even allows individual sockets to be activated or deactivated via radio remote control. The prices here are roughly between 20 and 100 dollars. Use a test or a good comparison with these variants of the socket strip so that you can correctly assess the effectiveness and safety of these products.

These five flaws shouldn’t show up in a test

It is seldom possible to identify weak points and defects before buying a power strip. Problems usually only arise during commissioning or longer periods of operation. Therefore, consult a good test before making a purchase decision. If necessary, go through test by test until you discover the test criteria relevant to your area of application. If these are met, you may have your new favorite power strip in view.

Avoid these five shortcomings:

  1. The multiple socket outlet did not work properly in the test.
  2. The parental controls are poor in the test.
  3. The overvoltage protection does not serve its purpose during the test.
  4. The quality of workmanship of the power strip proves to be inadequate in the test.
  5. During the test, it turns out that the sockets and USB slots are arranged impractically.

How to use a power strip correctly?

A socket strip is mostly low-maintenance, reliable and allows cost-intensive installation work to be dispensed with. Still, there are a few details that need to be considered. The installation location can be decisive for the smooth operation of a socket strip. For example, avoid exposing the bar to direct sunlight. It can get very warm, especially behind windows that are directly lit by the sun. Excessive heat can affect the performance of the product to such an extent that the socket strip can no longer reliably supply more powerful consumers.

If you operate adapters for laptops, scanners, printers and other technical devices on the power strip, it should not be covered or hidden in cupboards and compartments. After all, these adapters are a source of heat. If the heat from these devices cannot reliably escape, dangerous heat build-up occurs.

Either the fuses of your house electrical system intervene in good time or, in the worst case, there is a risk of fire. Ideally, you operate the power strip open on the desk or on the floor.

How to care for a power strip correctly?

  • Provide a location where the power strip can do its job without being disturbed. It should neither be too warm nor pose the risk that liquids and food could simply fall on the product – for example on the side of the dining table or directly in passageways.
  • If liquids have penetrated the power strip, ideally have them checked by a specialist.
  • If there is superficial dirt on the bar, take it off the net. Then clean them thoroughly. Make sure that no liquids get into the product. If you have used a damp cloth, it is best to wipe it dry.
  • Make sure that the sockets are not affected by dust. If necessary, remove the bar from the network and vacuum off the dust with a fine nozzle.
  • Do not store your power strip in damp rooms and do not expose it to moisture. In this way you ensure that the life expectancy of your product is not impaired by corrosion.
