Frequently Asked Questions: Rat Cage

Rats are considered to be very agile little animals, so before you buy a rat cage, you should look at the most important facts to find out which cage, which size and which furnishings fit your rat and your living situation.

In the following, we will briefly explain the meaningfulness of a rat cage and show you where and from whom you can buy it cheaply.

What is a rat cage?

A rat cage is not to be understood as a form of torture or a cage with which you can catch rats, but is merely a living space for a domestic rat.

It is not uncommon for people to buy a mouse or a rat as a pet, but care should also be taken to ensure they are kept appropriately.

Just because these little animals may not be very big, they need a relatively large amount of space because they are very active and need to be run. But more about that now.

How big should should the rat cage be?

Especially when keeping rats, one has to be aware that these animals need a lot of space or enough space to climb or walk around.

It is therefore important to pay attention to the size of the base, but also the height of the cage.

As a rule, it is recommended not to hold just one, but two rats at once, otherwise they can easily feel very lonely. With 2 rats, the basic dimensions are usually around 100 x 60 x 200cm.

In principle, however, the larger the cage, the better. A rat cage can never be too big.

What does a rat cage cost?

The prices naturally differ depending on the quality and design of the individual cages. The costs depend mainly on the material of the cage and its nature, but more on that later.

Where can I buy a rat cage?

Since rats are kept as normal pets in many countries and regions, it is not that difficult to find a rat cage that can be bought.

Depending on where you prefer to shop, you can get such cages either in an animal or zoo shop, zoo or pet shop, from the breeder or in the online shop.

What are the alternatives to a rat cage?

Basically, there are hardly any alternatives to the classic rat cage when it comes to keeping a domestic rat.

Rats are very angled animals and can quickly get through some hole or grid if they are not properly sized for a rat.

We therefore recommend that you purchase a rat cage if you are considering buying a rat.

These cages are uncomplicated, can usually be set up anywhere and there is also a large selection of different types of rat cages.

What types of rat cages are there and which one is right for you?

There are a few things to consider when buying a rat cage. Therefore, you should inform yourself in advance about all possibilities to find the right rat cage for you and your house rat.

As with most products, there are different materials from which rat cages can be made.

In the following we will list the different types and materials as well as their advantages and disadvantages.

Plastic Rat Cage

Basically you can say that plastic rat cages are the cheaper option. They are also lighter and easier to clean.

However, it can happen that your rodent begins to gnaw at the enclosure and, in the worst case, even nibble a hole in the cage. This can have serious consequences if your rat breaks out and you can no longer find it.

  • Cheap
  • Light
  • Easy cleaning

  • Dangerous for rodents
  • Not environmentally friendly

Due to the risk of breaking out, we especially recommend wooden rat cages, which are reinforced with a wire mesh. The bars of the cage should be rather dark so as not to blind the animals and thus make observation more difficult.

But you should make sure that the paint is not too toxic, because the little ones cannot be prevented from nibbling on it one time or another.

Wooden Rat Cage

If you compare the two most popular cages with each other, you can say that the wooden cages, provided they are reinforced with a wire mesh, are more recommendable because they are not only made more environmentally friendly and sustainable, but also much more natural for the little ones are.

However, it is essential to pay attention to the additional grid or wire, because without this reinforcement the rats can nibble through without problems – a disadvantage of wood.

But usually the wooden cages for rodents are only offered with wire reinforcement anyway. With the wire mesh there is only the right size to consider, but more on that later.

Here we just want to show you briefly the advantages and disadvantages of the rat cage made of wood with wire compared to that made of plastic:

  • More robust
  • More environmentally friendly
  • More natural
  • Less harmful

  • Expensive
  • Heavier
  • Often more difficult to clean

Factors to decide on a rat cage

We will then show you which aspects you can use to choose between the multitude of possible rat cages.

Here are the criteria that help you differentiate between different rat cages:

  • Size
  • Grid Size
  • Material
  • Furnishing

Rat Cage: Size

There are two different categories of size. First the size of the cage (base area and height) and once the size of the distances between the bars.

Of course, the size of the entire cage depends on how many rats you hold, how big they are / how big they are and how big the space you have is.

As a rule, however, a rat cage cannot be too large, since rats are very active little creatures and move around the room as much as possible.

The minimum size for 2 rats (rats should not be kept alone) is approximately 100 x 60 x 200cm for the base. The height of the cage is also very important, especially for rats, as they are mainly in the higher areas.

Rat Cage: Grid Size

In principle, the grid spacing should not be more than approx. 1.2 cm, since rats are very clever animals and can easily snake through anything. Therefore, you have to make sure that the rat’s head does not fit through the grid, because then it has no chance.

Rat Cage: Material

As mentioned in the decision section, there are mainly two materials from which rat cages are made. Plastic or wood with wire reinforcement.

The variant with wood is preferred, however, because it is not only more environmentally friendly and sustainable, but also contributes to a natural habitat.

Rat Cage: Furnishing

When buying a rat cage, you should also make sure that the cage is, for example, equipped with several floors, maybe has any connecting conductors and bridges.

But simple ramps, ropes and tubes are also welcome. The more active the rat can be, the better.

What is the best way to set up a rat cage?

Since the rat cage is a rat’s habitat, you must of course properly equip it with the most important things.

First of all, a so-called nipple drinker and a feeding bowl are required. This feeding bowl should, if possible, be attached quite stably, otherwise it can be knocked over very quickly.

Also make sure that these two containers are so large that all animals could eat and drink from them at the same time. (Or you can get several vessels at once)

In addition to these two essential elements, you can otherwise live out creativity. No matter if any bridges, ropes, hammocks, caves made of different materials or a box for digging, your little ones are guaranteed to be happy!

How often does a rat cage need to be cleaned?

In order to be able to properly clean a rat cage, it is first important to use the correct bedding.

Most pet traders do not recommend small animal litter, as this is mostly very dusty and can endanger the small lungs of the rats.

Therefore, they advise above all to use bedding made from hemp, corn or beech wood granulate. However, if you’d rather just lay out newspapers, that’s perfectly fine.

If you want to do something good for your little ones, you can also buy them hay or straw and line the cage with them. But make sure that these are organic products, as these dried grasses often contain traces of mold.

For cleaning: We recommend cleaning the cage (depending on the size and number of rats) 1-2 times a week. You can either let the rats run free for a short time or put them in a transport box.

It is best to remove the old litter first, wash the enclosure with water and then sprinkle it back in again.

What other accessories for rat cages are there?

When we talk about accessories, we are simply talking about additional furnishing elements for the rat cage. So there are of course different food bowls, drinking containers or climbing devices that can be bought with the cage.

This means that you can always add or exchange a little something and ensure variety.
