Frequently Asked Questions: Sandwich Makers

What is toast?

The toast bread is, next to the ciabatta and sandwich rolls, the most common bread to prepare a good, toasted sandwich. This is fine-pored and box-shaped cut white bread, which is bordered with a thin crust. The ingredients are wheat flour, milk, milk powder, water, sugar, fat, table salt and yeast. Other variants are made from sourdough.

Contrary to fears that toasted bread is not as healthy as other types of bread, it turns out that the difference does not exist. The fat content is also the same between multigrain, wholegrain or normal butter toast; the vitamin content alone is slightly higher in wholemeal toast.

Not only with toast, when bread or other starchy foods are excessively heated and roasted, the protein building block acrylamite can form, which is harmful to health in higher measured values. This is due to the sugar contained in the food and the high temperature that occurs during preparation, e.g. when deep-frying is necessary. Elevated values can also be found in French fries, cookies, chips, coffee or roasted nuts.

Therefore, when preparing toast, you should only avoid charring the bread, apart from the fact that toast is hardly edible under these conditions anyway. Compared to the toaster, however, there is a very low risk of burning the bread with a sandwich maker, as the devices usually have a temperature controller and overheating protection.

The questionable protein component is also contained in toast when it starts to mold and has green spots. If so, the entire package should be discarded, not just the affected disc.

If you stick to it, toast is just as healthy as normal bread. You can store it by freezing it. The toast stays fresh for a long time and can then be used for making sandwiches. Here, however, the bread should first be thawed so that the preparation works better.

What is considered a snack?

Defining what a snack is is not as straightforward as it seems. There is a multi-faceted discussion of this condition that is not only viewed in a nutritional sense, but also encompasses other areas of eating.

A snack is usually a simple snack that can be prepared quickly. This bite is then used to fill the stomach, taking place between the main meals to satisfy hunger or simply to recharge your batteries.

The body needs important nutrients and trace elements in order to be active, since it uses energy in its organism and at work. This means that it needs to be supplied with nutrients.

The snack is scientifically examined, of course, with regard to its nutrient profile, when it is consumed, the amount of energy and nutrients and the actual food group. The frequency of consumption also plays a role. The snack is viewed critically when it comes to indiscipline eating, the quick stuffing or gobbling down of a snack, but also consumption when there is actually no hunger.

The latter happens out of sheer boredom or simply because there is an appetite for something, mostly in the sweet area. These conditions mean that the snack gets a worse reputation than it offers in terms of nutritional values, that it is too fat or too sweet.

In the meantime, however, the variety of preparation also contributes to the fact that the snack quickly becomes a main meal. This can be the case, for example, with recipes for well-filled sandwiches. Hamburger or cheeseburger, pizza and similar snacks also fall into this range and achieve a more or less healthy level of satiety, which in turn depends on other conditions when it comes to health.

The term “snack” naturally also includes sweets, chips or nuts. Everything that is consumed in between, from paper plates, from hand or from bags, falls into this category. When it comes to the term “snack”, it is not just quick consumption, easy preparation and time savings that are essential, but also the disposal of leftovers.

The snack is also often not consumed while sitting, but even while standing or walking. That makes the discussion about the topic just as useful, because movement naturally has an impact on energy consumption and digestion.

The preparation of a sandwich is a little more digestible, especially if it is made at home and the ingredients can be checked. The sandwich then receives important nutrients and can be healthy.

What is a sandwich?

The sandwich as it is known today originated in England. It is now one of the widespread and international snacks and is prepared in different ways, including as a cold or warm snack. The club sandwich is usually served with additional toppings, e.g. with french fries.

The sandwich itself consists of two slices of bread that are filled and topped. Once with a spicy side dish such as tuna, ham, salami or roast, then with cheese, and finally with vegetables, e.g. lettuce, tomatoes and cucumber, and, depending on your taste, with eggs or onions. Different sauces or very simple mustard, mayonnaise, tartar sauce, horseradish and ketchup are used to round off the taste.

The classic sandwich is served roasted or toasted and divided in the middle to create two triangles. The edges of the toast or bread slices are also removed.

The special and easy-to-prepare form is the toasted or gratinated sandwich, which is eaten with melted cheese. It is pressed together during roasting and usually has ham or a similar topping as a filling in addition to the cheese, whereby the cheese then melts wonderfully during baking.

The bread can of course also be varied. Small and elongated rolls are called “panino” and are filled with different toppings, then pressed together and roasted by the sandwich maker. The typical shape is not so well suited for this, however, and should be replaced by the grill shape, i.e. simply placed between the ribbed heating surface. Ciabatta has also proven itself for the roasting process with filling and tastes a little different.

What is a sandwich maker?

A sandwich maker is a kitchen appliance for preparing sandwiches, i.e. open sandwiches. Unlike a toaster, the device not only heats the bread, but also all the ingredients it contains. This makes it possible, for example, to melt cheese on a sandwich.

How does a sandwich maker work?

The functional principle of a sandwich maker is not unlike a waffle iron. The sandwich can be opened and has heating elements on both sides. These are usually coated so that nothing sticks to them and the sandwiches can be easily removed after preparation.

In the vast majority of devices, the sandwich makers also have a special shape of the heating elements. This pre-forms the bread during preparation. It is divided in half diagonally, creating the classic triangular shape of sandwiches. Sandwich toasters for home use are only operated electrically.

What are the advantages & use cases of a sandwich maker?

Probably the biggest advantage of a sandwich maker is the speed with which sandwiches can be prepared. Preheating, as with an oven, is not necessary. Due to the small surfaces, a sandwich toaster reaches its operating temperature after a very short time.

Depending on the model, this can be the case after a few seconds. This enables a user to prepare sandwiches spontaneously and without any significant preparation.

At the same time, the functional principle also creates a clear advantage in terms of power consumption. Even when compared to small ovens, a sandwich uses far less electricity to prepare a sandwich.

Compared to toasters, sandwich makers convince in that they also heat the topping and not just the bread itself. This is the only way to make a classic cheese sandwich that many know and love. If you just put cheese on a heated toast, you cannot completely melt it.

An oven would also be required for this, and the entire preparation process becomes much more time-consuming and complicated. With the sandwich maker, however, it is sufficient to simply heat the bread that has already been filled for a short time. Incidentally, any ingredients can be used. If you want, you can also prepare a sandwich with ham or tomato and mozzarella.

Sandwich makers are useful wherever sandwiches are eaten. If these are regularly on the menu as a snack or main meal, it is worth buying them for your own home. Users enjoy easy preparation and high quality at the same time.

Sandwich makers are also popular in gastronomy, albeit mostly in a slightly different form. The devices have now established themselves as the standard for preparing sandwiches.

What types of sandwich makers are available?

Sandwich makers are available in different versions, which differ mainly in terms of their functionality. The simplest models only offer the preparation of sandwiches and dispense with timers or similar aids. If you really only expect sandwiches from your sandwiches, you will make a good choice with such a device, because you do not have to pay for features that are ultimately not used anyway.

If you like to use one device for several tasks, you will also find multifunction devices with a sandwich function. Such kitchen appliances often combine a waffle iron and a sandwich maker. This has the advantage that fewer devices have to be accommodated in the kitchen.

The inserts of some of these toasters can be exchanged so that the shape is always correct. Multifunctional toasters are useful for everyone who likes to and often prepares different dishes. The only disadvantage is the slightly higher price compared to less well-equipped devices.

How to clean a sandwich maker?

With the sandwich maker, cleaning has a major impact on the functionality of the device. For cleaning after preparation, the device should always be switched off and allowed to cool down first. Due to hygienic conditions, the sandwich maker should be cleaned regularly after each use and all food residues or grease residues should be removed. These ensure that the sandwich maker can overheat or smoke develops. Inadequate care can even pose a fire hazard.

Since the device is a grill, it can of course not simply be cleaned in the sink or even put in the dishwasher. A damp cloth is sufficient to clean the inner heating surfaces and the outer area. The use of aggressive cleaning agents is unnecessary, as they damage the coating and can also leave otherwise toxic residues.

Instead of abrasive, you can simply use some oil for more stubborn residues, which works on the heating surfaces for a while and then is removed with a soft cloth. Sodium is also ideal for cleaning such deposits.

Once the device has been wiped off, it should dry out thoroughly and cannot be used until it is completely dry.

For quick cleaning immediately after preparation, the heating plates can also be wiped out while they are still warm. This is particularly recommended if some cheese or topping has leaked and shouldn’t stick to the heating plate. Here, too, warm water is completely sufficient.

How nutritious is a sandwich?

The sandwich falls under the term “snack”, so it is primarily a quick snack. Snacks have a worse reputation than necessary, including being unhealthy, causing weight gain, being too sweet or too fat.

In fact, the nutritional value of a sandwich or similar snack is higher than expected. It’s all about the preparation and doing it yourself to get all the important nutritional values out of the sandwich.

Ready-made products are the real problem, as they are not only actual fat makers, but also contain a number of additives.
The snack is not a phenomenon of modern times. As early as the Stone Age, there was a kind of snack between meals, which was then eaten directly at the site, including fruit and berries, as an evolutionary meal from hand to mouth.

In all cultures, the snack between meals was as important as the actual meal. Eating main meals falls at certain times and parts of the day, and is usually accompanied by certain rules, e.g. the menu or some rules of behavior at the table. Of course, this does not apply to snacks between meals, which can be consumed without hesitation, which is why they are nevertheless wholesome food.

Interestingly enough, a new eating habit is developing in modern society, with its diverse food cultures flowing into one another or being combined from different areas and countries, which increases the snack as a meal.

The snack is better adapted to everyday life and the habits of work, family, friends, leisure time, partnership and household, and can be consumed more individually.

This applies to single households as well as to families, since most people are employed and therefore divide their time differently. Eating is no longer the main part of the daily routine.

Where the housewife used to wait to eat, today not only food but also appliances designed for this food have enriched the household. The sandwich maker is just as important as the microwave, toaster or coffee maker.

Snacks are therefore by no means unhealthy simply because they are snacks. Here, too, the only thing that matters is the right preparation. If you pay particular attention to health aspects, you can use use mixed bread instead of wheat bread or toast.

Rather, the finished or pre-made snack with high sugar, fat and salt content is not particularly healthy. A sandwich does not fall into this category because it is topped and prepared independently, so the ingredients can be controlled and tailored to your own needs.

It also hardly allows it to be consumed carelessly in between, i.e. it determines eating behavior as an unconscious act, which is another prejudice against the snack.

A sandwich fills the stomach and doesn’t make you feel hungry again too quickly, unless it is prepared on its own as toast with cheese.

The fact remains that the body also needs to be supplied with energy in between and that snacks, distributed throughout the day, are a better way of eating than three large main meals that are very generous and make digestion particularly difficult.

The snack is consumed quickly and, as an interim solution, can bridge the feeling of hunger, which gives the body what it craves. The headless eating without feeling hungry is a bit more worrying and leads to the accusation of indiscipline and the risk of being overweight.

In the end, health always depends on the total amount of energy supplied and, of course, on the quality of the ingredients. In addition, hardly anyone feels like eating the same thing every day. The versatility of the diet determines the quality of the meals, which can be wonderfully complemented by making a sandwich.

How are sandwich makers tested?

In our sandwich maker test, each device has to prove itself in different categories. Only if a model does not allow itself to make significant mistakes in any of these points does it have a chance of the title Sandwichmaker comparison winner. You can find out below what we attach particular importance to.

Preparation time

When a sandwich maker is used, it should usually be quick. In the test, we therefore take a close look at how long it takes for a device to deliver a ready-to-eat sandwich. In addition to the actual time for preparation, we also take any preheating into account.

Preparation quality

Of course, a sandwich from the sandwich toaster should not only be prepared quickly, it should also taste good. In the test, we make sure that the sandwiches are heated as evenly as possible. The topping on the inside has to be hot before the bread becomes too dark or dry.

In this category everything revolves around the simplest possible operation. In the best case scenario, all operating elements are self-explanatory so that the user does not have to refer to the manual at any time. We also pay attention to how easily a prepared sandwich can be removed from the toaster. With a good coating, this can be done quickly and without leaving any residue.

Power Consumption

At this point we measure how much electricity a sandwich maker needs to prepare a meal. The following applies: the less, the better.

Build Quality

In the sandwich maker test, it’s not just the inner values that count. The case must also be convincing in terms of materials and workmanship. We expect high-quality materials that are carefully processed. We unmask inferior devices based on creaking noises, gaping gaps and similar information.

Scope of Delivery

Is there everything we need to run a sandwich maker in the packaging? Can you find useful additional things such as different inserts? We pursue such and other questions in this category.

Price-Performance Ratio

The sandwich makers must also be able to convince us in terms of price. Even a model that is completely convincing in terms of quality cannot be recommended without hesitation if the manufacturer is asking far too much money for it. For a realistic assessment, we compare the prices of a sandwich maker with similarly equipped models and take into account both the manufacturer’s recommended retail price and current street prices.

What do I have to look out for when buying a sandwich maker?

A wooden spatula for removing the finished sandwich is recommended for every sandwich maker. This will help you avoid damaging the coating. If you remove your sandwiches with a metal fork, you can quickly scratch something off the coating. This ensures that these will burn in the future and that some very strong encrustations will form. If you buy a wooden spatula right away, you can avoid such phenomena.

Sometimes there are also various uses for sandwich makers, but the device must explicitly support this. Our tip: When buying interchangeable inserts, make sure that they are dishwasher-safe. In this way, cleaning by hand is not necessary and handling is even easier.

Every now and then, a dough scraper is a suitable addition to a sandwich toaster, preferably made of plastic. If a sandwich is filled too generously, it tends to swell around the edges, just like a waffle iron that is too full. In such a case, the residues can be removed quickly and cleanly with a dough scraper.

Sandwich maker accessories

Anyone planning to buy a sandwich maker should first make sure that the device is the right size. The most important thing is whether someone wants to use the sandwich alone or whether it is intended for a whole family. In the latter case, models that can prepare up to four sandwiches at the same time make sense.

This avoids long waiting times and allows several people to enjoy fresh sandwiches at the same time. For a single kitchen, however, a smaller model is also suitable, with which only one sandwich can be prepared.

You shouldn’t be too impressed by the manufacturer’s specifications. These say next to nothing about how well sandwiches turn out in a sandwich maker or how long it takes to prepare.

Many a device with 800 watts can achieve better results in these matters than a model with 1,200 watts or more.
Ultimately, lower wattages are even an advantage, as less electricity is used during preparation. So study product reports before you buy to get information about the preparation quality and don’t be blinded by any barely informative key data.

In any case, you should make sure that the heating elements of a sandwich maker are well coated. If this is not the case, this leads to several problems. The sandwiches are then difficult to remove because they stick to the sandwich. In addition, ingredients like cheese like to leave traces that can only be removed with great effort.

If you don’t pay attention at this point, you have to clean your sandwich maker very often and make a lot of effort. Unfortunately, it is difficult to tell with the naked eye how good the coating is on a particular sandwich maker. Don’t be afraid to read our product reports carefully to get a good impression of them.

Of course, the price always plays an important role when buying. Sandwich makers are already very cheap, some of them are offered for less than 20 dollars. Such models are really only suitable for those who do not have high demands on their sandwiches and just want to heat them.

On the other hand, those who value a tender, yet crispy crust and an evenly heated interior should expect costs of around 50 dollars. Luxury models for 100 dollars or more, on the other hand, only make sense if they combine several devices and are to be used frequently. In our tests, by the way, we always reveal whether a sandwich maker is worth the money or not.

Sandwich maker alternatives

Those who simply cannot get used to the sandwich maker have only a few alternatives to choose from, but we would like to briefly introduce them. First of all, there is the classic toaster that can be found in almost every household. This also heats bread in no time and thus ensures a better taste and a crispy consistency.

However, it cannot be used to heat bread and topping at the same time. The finished bread is only topped afterwards. While doing so, it gives off some heat, but it’s not enough to actually fry cheese or ham, for example. But if you don’t want that, you won’t miss anything with this type of preparation.

The classic toaster has the advantage that it is already available in almost every household and therefore no new purchase is necessary. In addition, it can be used a tad faster than a sandwich toaster and thus also allows a quick slice of bread in between meals.

The preparation of sandwiches in the oven is also very popular. Here, too, there is the advantage that no further devices are required. However, the results cannot be compared with one another. Normal toasted bread dries very quickly in the oven and has an unpleasant consistency.

When using cheese, it runs very quickly and simply drips down from the bread, as it is not sealed, unlike with the sandwich maker. After all, spontaneous enjoyment is only possible to a limited extent, as the oven first has to be preheated for preparation, which can take half an hour. As if all of that wasn’t enough, the power consumption is also significantly higher.

In principle, sandwiches can also be prepared in various other ways, for example in a pan or even in the deep fryer. The sandwich maker has proven to be the best method. We can only recommend such a device to everyone who likes to eat sandwiches regularly. If, on the other hand, sandwiches are only on the menu once a year or not at all, purchasing them naturally makes little sense.
