Frequently Asked Questions: Space Heaters

What is a space heater?

A space heater is a device that is used as a direct heater. Consequently, the heat is produced immediately as soon as the device is switched on. Depending on the model, a heating coil or a heating conductor is used to convert the current, which is supplied to the space heater via a cable connected to the socket, into heat. Depending on the model, up to 2000 or 3000 watts are possible for this heating method.

The higher the wattage consumption per hour, the higher the electricity costs rise. Space heaters usually also have a fan, which evenly releases the heat from the device into the surrounding air. The room is heated quickly, so that there is a comfortable climate.

How does a space heater work?

The space heater is a device, which is usually made of plastic. Inside are the heating elements, which can be a heating coil or a heating conductor. There are models whose heating coil is made of metal or ceramic, which differs in heat output. In this regard, you will learn more afterward, when the respective different models are cut.

The cold air is led along the heating spiral, whereby this can warm up. Through a fan, the air is released from the device to the ambient air. The room is heated within a few minutes, so that the living space in a short time reaches a comfortable indoor climate.

How many watts should a space heater have?

Space heaters are offered with different power levels. The range is very wide. Devices for domestic use usually provide 500 to 2200 watts. Consequently, at the highest level, a power of 2200 watts is achieved.

But how many watts can a space heater produce? This question can also not be answered so sweepingly. Since it depends on the size of the room to be heated.

What does the wattage on a space heater mean?

Watt is a unit of measurement for the power, i.e. the energy consumption per used period of time. Thus, the wattage of any electrical device, always gives information about the respective power.

The higher the wattage, the higher the power.

With regard to the space heater, the heating power is also the heat thus generated. All models have adjustable stages, which are provided with different wattages. There are models for medium to high heating power requirements. In the lower range, for example, there are 250 watts, but this is rather rare in terms of space heaters.

Space heaters are most commonly available in the 500 to 1,000 watt range. However, it can also go up to 1500 or even 2000 to 3000 watts. Industrial space heaters deliver much more power, so models with 9,000, 12,000 or 15,000 watts are not uncommon.

The higher the wattage, the higher the power consumption.

Heating at the lowest level, for example, 500 watts, is at first glance more energy efficient, but it also takes longer to reach the desired room temperature. It is recommended that you first warm up the room at full power and then set the fan heater to the lower wattage in order to keep electricity costs low.

How many watts do you need for which rooms?

As a general rule, space heaters are only recommended for use in smaller rooms. 10 to 15 square meters can easily be warmed up with a space heater. In beer, the electric heater quickly reaches a comfortable temperature. The bathroom is the typical place of use, which is optimal for space heaters.

If the space heater has a power of 500 watts, it can be called a mini space heater. These are particularly intended for camping or even as a use in the camper. Often, these models are also called camping heaters.

Usually, due to the small size, you can conveniently place them on a table. In addition, it is possible that you can use the fan heater but also for home. In this case, a hobby room or even the bathroom can be heated.

If the room is larger than 10 square meters, the 500-watt heater can not provide sufficient power. Therefore, it makes sense to heat larger rooms with a device of 1000 watts of power. However, here it also depends on the personal feeling. If you like it very warm, it may be that a fan heater with 1000 watts is not enough power to bring the room to the desired temperature.

A device that works with 2000 watts can be an alternative, because you can adjust the power individually. However, these devices are also usually somewhat more expensive to purchase, which, however, pays off in terms of performance.

What is the power consumption?

Fan heaters are equipped with different powers. There are models that can be operated with 500, 750 or with 3000 watts and more. The heat development also depends on the power, so that the power consumption can only be calculated accurately to a limited extent.

Many models have a thermostat, which reports at a temperature and stops the heating process. During this time, of course, the fan heater requires less cost than when it is running at full speed. Nevertheless, a basic calculation can be made so that you can get an idea of what the fan heater would cost on average.

The price of electricity varies depending on where you live, so we decided to use a price of 0.30 cents per kilowatt-hour. An appliance that is rated at 500 watts will use only 500 watts in an hour, which is only half of a kilowatt-hour. Consequently, the price corresponds to 15 cents for one hour. If you use the space heater for several hours a day, the consumption will naturally be higher. If you use it for 5 hours, the result would be 15 cents multiplied by 5.

The cost would be 75 cents per day. If you let the space heater do its work for 10 hours a day, the cost would be US$1.50 per day. Calculated over the month, 5 hours of daily use adds up to about. If you let the fan heater do its work for 10 hours, you can expect electricity costs of US$45.

So it all depends on your usage behavior how high the electricity costs are regulated. If a fan heater requires more watts and is operated with 1000 watts, a daily cost of US$1.50 is incurred for 5 hours, whereby a total cost price of US$45 would occur. If the fan is used for 10 hours a day, you would have to add US$90 to your monthly household expenses.

Advantages of a space heaters

The space heater is a device that provides quick heat. In addition, space heaters are available for a low price due to their simple design. The range of application of a space heater are large rooms as well as small ones. In small rooms, the space heater finds an optimal place due to its compact dimensions. No additional connections, such as gas or oil are necessary to operate the space heater.

A power outlet and possibly an extension cord are sufficient to connect the device to the circuit and operate it. Many models are equipped with a timer, which can be set individually, so that, for example, at night the fan heater turns off automatically.

The scope of use of a space heater is in many areas. Most often, a fan heater is used in the winter months, when it is cold outside and the room should be heated quickly. Bathrooms in particular are not all equipped with heaters today, so the fan heater provides cozy warmth there while showering or bathing.

It can also be used when camping, insofar as a power outlet or a power converter with appropriate power is available. The space heater can also be used very well in mountain huts, so that the time can be bridged until the wood stove can heat up the room.

In workshops there is also the possibility to install a space heater – here industrial fan heaters are increasingly used, which have a higher power range and are more robust in construction.

Types of a space heaters

There are quite different space heaters, which differ from the design, but not from the function. There are space heaters that are equipped with wire coils or models that work with ceramics. If wire coils are used, the price is low, because it is a simple type of space heater. Ceramic fan heaters have a better quality, which gives them a long life. It can happen that a cheap space heater with wire coils does not work after 3 to 4 years.

Ceramic models usually live longer and are therefore more robust. Differences can also be seen in the housing finishes. There are simple devices that have a plastic housing. However, since these also have some disadvantages such as reaching the melting point of the plastic when the heating power is too high, these models are often replaced with metal housing space heaters.

If a metal housing is chosen, the service life is also increased, the device itself turns out to be more robust and can also withstand the heat generated. In addition to these factors, there are also other models, which we would now like to present to you in more detail.

Car space heater

Especially when the heating fails in winter, it is good if you have a space heater, which can also be used in the car. In the vehicle, the space heater can replace the parking heater, which can be pre-programmed and thus the fogged and icy windows free of it.

The advantage is that you neither have to scrape off the ice nor freeze in the vehicle. The control is regulated via the 12 volt connection, i.e. the cigarette lighter.

So if your vehicle is not equipped with a parking heater, you can use the car heater fan, which provides a preheated and ice-free car. 10 to 20 minutes are usually sufficient to warm up the small interior of the vehicle.

Bathroom space heater

Another variant of space heaters is the model, which was designed for use in the bathroom. Today there are still bathrooms that do not have heating, so the bathroom space heater was created precisely for this area. The bathroom is a wet room, where the use of electrical appliances is actually not suitable.

Therefore, the space heaters that can be used in the bathroom are specially designed. They have a splash guard, which protects the interior from water splashes. However, the space heater should not be placed near the shower or bathtubs, as danger to life lurks in case of indefinite use.

Place the space heater in a safe place, where it can not in any case come into contact with water. The advantage of using a fan heater in the bathroom is that the room will be warm and cozy within minutes. Showering or bathing will be more fun and you will not have to freeze in the process.

There are also models that have a towel holder, so the towel is also well preheated, which prevents freezing. Bathroom space heater can also be mounted on the wall, which is a useful solution, insofar as it will not be used for other rooms.

Industrial space heater

If a space heater is used on a construction site in the winter, it must perform quite a bit more than a normal device for the home. Therefore, these models have a more solid construction. The materials used are just as robust, so it is not uncommon for the industrial space heater to be integrated into a housing made of metal.

In addition, industrial space heaters are larger and produce more wattage. Workshops that have to manage without heating in winter will also find this model a perfect alternative for not having to do without a warm environment in winter.

How are space heaters tested?

In the space heater test, several models were examined very closely. We have already presented several models in the comparison table at the beginning. There is also a detailed product report, in which we evaluated and noted down data as follows. First, we dealt with the purchase of the devices and a price comparison.

The purchase cost of a space heater is much lower on the net with a higher quality. Due to the fact that we purchased the fan heater on the net, there was a test point describing the delivery and packaging.

To put a space heater into operation, it is often only necessary to plug the cable into the socket and turn on the device. However, some models may require prior assembly or adjustment. We will show you how the commissioning is done and which requirements still have to be met.

After we have explained this point as well, we will move on to the data comparison. We present all the important data so that you can keep track of everything. In addition, there is a practical test that provides information about the actual power consumption and also describes how long the space heater needs to heat up a room of the corresponding size.

We subjected all fan heaters to the same conditions so that fair results could be identified in this way. At the end, there is a conclusion with a recommendation for which area of application the fan heater is suitable and where it should rather not be used.

What should I look for when buying a space heater?

Before buying a space heater, it is necessary to pay attention to some details. The models differ in their features as well as design. Since the purchase also results in different price structures, it is advantageous to determine in advance how much you can spend on the device.

There are inexpensive models that are available for as little as US$10. If you want a higher quality space heater, it can cost US$100 and even more. Therefore, it is advisable that you already know in advance in which price range you want to move.

Another consideration is the intended use. For what should the fan heater be used. Where should it be used. In the vehicle, in the workshop or in the bathroom, there are differentiated models. Consequently, you can choose from the area in which you would like to integrate a space heater.

Also note that there may be different performance of the devices. Also, for use in the bathroom, it makes more sense to purchase a suitable device with a splash guard. In addition, protection against the condensation is also given.

How long will the space heater be used. If a long period of use per day is planned, the more important is the power consumption. In addition, if the space heater will be used for a long time, it should have a higher quality. If you want to use the device only a few hours a day, you can switch to a model in the low price range.

Power consumption is a fundamental component of fan heaters. A device that has 500 watts, of course, requires much less power than aGerät, which applies 2000 watts or more. In this case, the purpose of use also arises.

For a room of 50 square meters, it makes more sense to purchase a device with more power. 30 square meters, however, can already be heated with a model that only brings 1000 watts. For the bathroom, even less powerful models are available.

The space requirement still plays a significant role. In the bathroom, it is advantageous if the device is mounted on the wall. In the hobby room, the fan heater can also be mounted on the wall.

If the fan heater is to be placed in a room, the size that the fan heater brings up is crucial. There are very long but thin models that fit into corners or narrow areas. Large industrial fan heaters, of course, require more space than the small 500 watt heater.

Determine in advance what area the heater will be used for. Based on this determination, you can also determine the space requirements so that you do not have to make do with a model that is too large or too small later on.

Fan heaters are also equipped with extras. Some models have a timer, where you can regulate the heating time individually. Furthermore, there are fan heaters that are equipped with a remote control, so that the device can be conveniently controlled from the sofa.

Space heater accessories

No matter which heating system is used to heat a room, dry air always occurs during the heating period, which is not healthy for the human organism. Dry air can cause eyes to become dry or mucous membranes to dry out. They become more susceptible to bacteria, which can ultimately trigger colds and infections.

Therefore, it is recommended to purchase a humidifier in addition to the heater. Placing water near the heater turns out to be less useful, as the warm air would hardly reach the water. Therefore, if you switch to this alternative heater, it makes sense to use a humidifier.

Furthermore, it is advisable to think about protecting the walls or furniture. Heaters can also remove moisture from the walls, wallpaper and furniture, and then make the material look brittle. To prevent damage, it is advantageous to place a suitable shelter that will protect the surrounding furniture and walls from the heat radiation.

Space heater alternatives

An alternative to a space heater are, for example, infrared heaters. These models have light sources that emit heat. However, there is a significant disadvantage with this heating method. Only objects and bodies are heated, so there is hardly any heating of the air in the room.

The so-called radiant heat is more suitable if you are outdoors and are warmed up by the direct radiation of the radiator. If you wish to increase the temperature of the room, either only a heater or a space heater can help.

The regular heating method is also an alternative to the space heater. However, a heater can only be installed in workshops and warehouses to a limited extent, so there are almost no alternatives for this area.
