How does an SSHD work?
As the name suggests, the SSHD is a mixture of the functions of HDD and SSD hard drives: flash memory and magnetic disk.
Just like a conventional HDD hard drive, the hybrid has one or more rotating disks, the platter, on which data is stored and retrieved with a read / write head. This part of the hard drive forms the greater part of the memory.
The other part of the hard drive, like the SSD, consists of flash memory chips. This much smaller part of the medium stores or pushes data that is used frequently. The overall performance is increased by the faster data rates and access times on the flash memory.
The entire SSHD appears to you as a logical drive on the computer. That means you don’t sort your data and operating system manually.
The sorting is done automatically according to an algorithm that observes which files are used frequently. So you will often find system files and operating system on the SSHD.
What are the advantages over conventional HDD hard drives?
Compared with an HDD, the Solid State Hybrid Drive can accelerate the operating system somewhat overall. That means shorter boot times, faster program starts. The best way to enjoy the performance of flash memory is with repetitive applications.
Sensitivity: If you have to remove or transport your hard drives frequently, this factor can also be important. Can I upgrade my computer / laptop with an SSHD?
Yes you can. In almost every case it makes sense to replace the internal HDD with an SSHD. So you can get a speed increase even from older computers.
The function and construction of the SSHD is so similar to the HDD that it can be easily exchanged in any laptop or desktop computer. When replacing, be sure to pay attention to size, form factor and connection.

How do I switch from an HDD to an SSHD?

Types of SSHDs
SSHDs are available from different manufacturers in different designs. Although there are SSHDs with different storage capacities, the main difference between the various models is their RPM number or revolutions per minute.
The memory size only determines how much data can be stored on the hard disk. The two most common RPM sizes are:
- SSHD 5400RPM
- SSHD 7200RPM
SSHDs combine the advantages of fast SSD hard drives and large HDD hard drives in one hybrid hard drive. Since the SSD share is usually eight GB, most of an SSHD still consists of conventional HDD hard drives. These HDD hard disks have to rotate in order to read data.
The number of RPMs indicates how many revolutions the hard disk rotates per minute. The SSHD models differ due to the RPM numbers, which also have certain advantages and disadvantages. Therefore, not every SSHD is equally suitable.
In addition, SSHD hybrid hard drives also differ in their size. They are available in sizes 3.5 “and 2.5”. The only difference is that the 3.5 inch models are intended for the desktop area and the 2.5 inch models for use in notebooks.

SSHD 5400RPM: Advantages & Disadvantages
Basically, the more RPM a hard drive has, the faster it is. This means that the files can be copied to, moved to, or copied down from the hard drive faster. So the only advantage of 5400 RPM models is the price.
These models can be purchased a little cheaper than models with higher RPM numbers. This makes SSHDs with low RPM numbers interesting for budget PC builds, for example.

The interface specifies the speed limit. Faster here means less waiting time, faster access, faster work.
In the case of the SSHD, it means that you have to wait less long when copying files, when starting your system or when opening programs.
In most cases, SSHD are used as an internal hard drive and have a SATA interface. The latest SATA type is Serial ATA-600, also known colloquially as SATA III.
A theoretical speed of 6.0 Gbit / s is possible over this connection. The SSHD hard disks do not achieve these transfer rates, however
Write & Read Speed
The specification describes the speed at which the magnetic disk rotates in the hard disk. The faster the platter spins, the faster data can be accessed or written.
The smaller 2.5-inch disks tend to rotate more slowly at 5,400 rpm than the larger 3.5-inch disks at 7,200 rpm.
The write and read speeds are values that describe the data rate of the disk. The speed says something about the general performance of the disk. Faster is better. Most SSHD are faster than conventional HDD hard drives but slower than SSDs.
More storage space means you have more space for your files. In most cases, of course, more is better. However, the models with larger storage also consume a little more energy.
The flash cache does not grow with the mechanical disks. Most hybrid models have 8 GB of memory. That is completely sufficient for the average application.
SSHD are sold at 2.5 “or 3.5”. As a rule, the smaller panels are more suitable for notebooks, while the 3.5 inch models are primarily for older desktop computers.
The form factor does not necessarily have to describe the overall height of a model. The inches usually refer to the diameter of the platter, the rotating disk in the hard drives. The form factor says nothing about the flash memory.
The dimensions are decisive for the successful installation of the storage medium in a device such as a laptop or game console.
With desktop computers there is usually a little more room for installation. In any case, it is advisable to measure the hard disk slot exactly or to research the dimensions for the device.
Weight can also be important with SSHD panels. For example, if you prefer a very light notebook because you travel a lot with your computer, you should also take a look and compare.
Usually 2.5 inch hard drives are installed in mobile devices. These are inherently lighter than the larger 3.5 inch hard drives.
The moving parts in the SSHD make noise. Sometimes this can be a nuisance when working. Or in mobile devices it can happen that work is carried out in places where it has to be very quiet.
Fortunately, the volume levels are no longer the same as with HDD hard drives a few years ago. It is now very quiet overall. There is still a little difference between the individual models.
Here the noise level is given in decibels during operation and while idling. The values are all quite close together. You have to cope with between 22 and 27 decibels. As a comparison: a refrigerator is considered a “quiet” device with a noise level of up to 35 decibels.
