FAQ - Prepaid SIM Card in Thailand

Can I use my existing SIM Card?

Our advice: You should not use your local SIM card in Thailand. The roaming rates are so high that you could get rid of a small fortune within minutes. It is better that you will get a Thai SIM card either directly at the airport after passport control or purchase one online before you travel. The offers are aimed directly at tourists.

Alternatively, you can strike later in the city. In addition to official and free mobile phone shops, SIM cards are also available from large supermarkets such as 7Eleven and Family Mart.

The SIM cards are inserted, activated and set up directly by the seller. You do not have to worry about anything and you can start using the mobile internet directly.

The prices are very cheap compared to other markets. Depending on the rates, you get 8 GB for 15 days for the price of 599 baht or for 8 days 3 GB for the price of 299 baht. Local Calls usually cost 1 baht per minute. For calls to Europe you will pay 5 baht per minute. With very reasonable rates, you can browse the internet unlimited for one month for 499 baht. 100 baht corresponds to the equivalent of around US$3.

The network coverage is generally solid with all providers. If you are traveling for a long time in a more remote region, it may be worthwhile to check the network coverage beforehand.

Can I get a Thai SIM Card at the Suvarnabhumi Airport?

When you arrive at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport, the first shops you will see are for rentals (Avis, Sixt, Budget, etc) at the exit after baggage claim, then currency exchange. Afterwards, you will find the shops and service centers of the mobile phone providers AIS, DTAC and TrueMove.

It is advisable to buy your SIM card for Internet and telephone directly from the mobile service provider in the Service Center right after you arrive at the airport.

There you will get good advice about the available offers in English and you can insert the SIM card in your smartphone or tablet free of charge and get it configured.

Can I buy a SIM Card for Thailand in the shopping malls?

In Thailand, you can buy a SIM card practically anywhere. SIM cards for calls and mobile internet access are available in every 7-eleven or FamilyMart shop. Every shop or convenience store near hotels also has SIM cards on sale.

Beware that in the small shops, you will receive a blank SIM Card, which you then have to install and charge with credit yourself. This is not always that easy, although the enclosed descriptions are always available in English. The staff in these shops often speak little English.

Watch out for the stands on the street. These SIM Cards are mostly invalid and cannot be used anymore. Therefore, it is best to buy SIM cards in the service centers or online.

What happens to my mobile phone contract?

Most mobile service providers outside of Thailand can no longer fulfill their service. In addition, you may face expensive roaming charges in Thailand. So it makes no sense to continue your existing contract.

Prepaid SIM Cards for Thailand are best purchased in the service centers at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi or in a service center in the big shopping malls. But first you should decide which network provider you want to choose. To do this, check network coverage maps which are available online to make sure you pick the right one.

Which provider did you choose and why? Let us know in the comments.
