What is a Thermal Carafe?

If you want to keep drinks warm for a long time, an insulated carafe is ideal for you. This is a sealable vessel that reduces heat transfer between the environment and the contents.

In this respect, insulated carafes, often called thermal carafes, are suitable not only for warm but also for cold liquids. For optimal insulation, the carafes usually also have an appropriate closure. This makes them suitable for use on the road.

How does a Thermal Carafe work?

The principle of operation of the thermal carafe  is very simple. It consists of two housings. The outer casing, as a rule, does not contribute to thermal insulation and serves mainly to protect the inner casing. This consists quite classically of a double-walled vessel. The space in between is evacuated here and thus prevents heat conduction. The wall facing the liquid inside usually has an additional coating or is mirrored.

The resulting reflection also minimizes heat or cold loss to a certain extent. All in all, the thermal carafe reduces not only the heat balance caused by conduction and convection, but also that caused by thermal radiation.

Originally, thermal carafes were sealed by a large cork. In the meantime, however, plastic closures are used almost exclusively. Instead of the double-walled glass jar, a stainless steel jar – also double-walled, of course – is also used today. However, a vacuum for insulation is still present here, of course. The outer casing is often made of stainless steel. In other cases, however, a plastic cover is also used here – it provides a more appealing exterior.

Advantages of Thermal Carafes

Thermal carafe rarely differ in their construction. As you already know, a double-walled stainless steel housing and another outer housing made of plastic or also stainless steel are now mainly used. Real differences usually only exist in terms of the shape of the carafes.

While they are primarily intended for home use – for example, to keep coffee warm longer while eating cake, insulated bottles were designed for mobile use. Thus, they do not fall into the category of thermal carafes, but are still worth a mention.

The clear advantage of the thermal carafe is, of course, that it keeps drinks – whether hot or cold – in the desired temperature range for longer. While coffee in a conventional porcelain coffee pot experiences severe temperature loss within a few minutes, it can be enjoyed quite warm in the thermal carafe even after several hours.

The same applies, of course, to cool lemonades in the summer. In a glass container, they would quickly take on the outside temperature. If they are in a thermal carafe, they are a welcome refreshment throughout the day.

Types of Thermal Carafes

There is a big difference between the thermal carafes and the insulated cups.

It mainly refers to the visual appearance and the transportability of the object. If you want to carry hot or cold drinks with you on the go, you should go for an insulated cup. On the living room table with coffee and cake, thethermal carafe looks much better.

Among the thermal carafes, a distinction is also made between those with glass inserts and those made of stainless steel. The thermal carafe with glass insert has good insulating properties and does not release any flavor to the beverage. However, they are very sensitive to falls. Significantly lighter than the glass carafe, is the one made of stainless steel. It is also much more robust, but does not keep drinks hot or cold for quite as long.

How are Thermal Carafes tested?

Of course, you want to buy the perfect thermal carafe that not only meets your personal requirements, but is also very high in quality. In tests, therefore, particular emphasis is placed on some attributes. You can find out what these are in the following. Use these criteria also when you perform a test yourself.

Material
As you already know, the material of the carafe not only determines its break resistance, but also its insulating properties. Basically, you have the choice here between:

  • Stainless steel
  • Stainless steel / plastic
  • Glass / Stainless steel

Ultimately, the chosen material affects the price, but also the taste and design.

Shape
Thermal carafes should always have a wide base. Only in this way do they have a stable stand. Towards the top, they can then become quite a bit narrower. Ultimately, however, it depends here on your personal taste.

Closure
The closure of thermal carafes is almost always a screw cap. So that you don’t have to unscrew and re-screw it all the time, a screw cap with a portioner is recommended. Here, you do not have to unscrew the cap, but press a button, a pusher or operate a lever. The beverage can then be poured quite easily.

Pourer
The thermal carafe usually has a spout. It is located opposite the handle and ensures that you can fill your coffee cup or glass precisely. In the test, make sure that the spout does not drip. After all, in some cases, this poses a major problem. After all, you don’t get anything out of a spout if you have to wipe the table again after each pouring because liquid has dripped beside it.
