What is a top load washing machine?

How does a top load washing machine work?
A conventional Central European top-loading washing machine has a water-permeable single or double bearing drum, a waterproof housing, a pump for pumping the water in and out, and a motor for moving the drum.
The soiled laundry is loaded dry into the drum from the top. The detergent and, if desired, fabric softener or other additives are placed in a specially provided compartment. The settings for the wash program are usually made from the top of the top loader, as is the loading of the laundry.
Where the display is at the front of the front loader, it is at the top of the top loader. Mostly also still increased to the filling hatch. Here the temperature and wash program are set and started.
After starting the washing machine, water is pumped into the machine via this compartment to produce a suds for cleaning the laundry. With the help of the drum movement, the laundry is moved in the suds and thus cleaned. Who should use a top load washing machine?
Basically, a top-loading washing machine can be used by anyone. They are narrow, have a good washing capacity and can already be found in many households. However, this type of washing machine is rarely found in large-scale commercial use. There are a few reasons for this:
Top load washing machines in private households
The advantages of a top-loading washing machine are that it takes up little space and has a small load volume. This means it is often found in households of singles, seniors, or even as a second machine in larger households.
Because these households simply don’t have as much laundry that needs to be washed as something like a household with several children. Every now and then, a model with something like 7 kilos of load volume can be found in a household with little bathroom space.
In addition to this, top-loading machines are often found in communal laundry rooms of apartment buildings or in basements where there are several private washing machines. This is because the nature of their opening simply allows them to be better secured than washing machines with portholes. Special locks for this type of use can be found in stores.
Industrial top load washing machines
Top loaders tend not to be found in large commercial operations. If you are looking for a top loader for commercial use, then it is more likely to be found in small businesses. This is partly due to the comparatively high purchase prices, and partly because top loaders are rarely offered with a large wash load volume.
For hotels, bathhouses or laundries, they simply do not have enough washing capacity. From time to time, a top loader can be found in the storerooms of restaurants, beauty salons or hairdressers who want to wash some towels with it.
As soon as larger quantities of laundry are involved, most businesses opt for a front loader despite higher maintenance costs.
Industrial washing machines or washing machines in laundromats are almost always front loaders.

Even though top-loaders are probably the exception in households, they certainly have their reasons to exist. They save space and have a reputation for being more durable. Bending and stooping when loading the washing machine is no longer necessary, and the small washing volume is more of an advantage than a disadvantage for some households.
A top loader is the usual washing machine for placement in the bathroom. The width of top-loaders is usually much smaller than that of front-loaders. They usually have a height of 85 cm, a width of 60 cm and a depth of 55 or 60 cm. Top loaders are usually a little taller (90 cm), but a lot narrower (40 or 45 cm). This is due to the way both models are integrated into a kitchen unit. A built-in front-loader is integrated under the countertop.
Top-loading washing machines are usually not fully integrable. Some models have the option of blending with kitchen fronts, making them partially integrable. However, placing it under the countertop never works because the opening of a top loader is naturally upward.
Fill from above
Filling the washing machine from above has a decisive advantage: it is very easy on the back. The mere fact that modern washing machines for private households have a capacity of up to 12 kilos suggests that filling the washing machine can be laborious work, especially for older or, for example, pregnant people.
Most people find filling from the top without bending over and crawling halfway into the drum to perhaps find a lost sock or two after all, more pleasant. However, very short people who have difficulty reaching the bottom of the top loader will still prefer to choose a front loader for this type of filling.
There is always a rumor that top loaders require less maintenance than front loaders. However, this has not been statistically proven. Of course, the load on the bearings is distributed when the drum is mounted on two sides. Companies like Miele, for example, cannot confirm this when asked.
This is because top loaders from Miele, just like front loaders, are only attached with one bearing. However, there is a real difference between wash tubs and top loaders with a moving drum. This is because wash tubs do not require bearings and weights at all. While this reduces washing efficiency, it also reduces maintenance intensity.
A top loader can only be opened upwards. Nowadays, many households have both a washing machine and a dryer. If both can be loaded from the front, the dryer can easily be placed on top of the washing machine. This is not possible the other way around, as washing machines are much heavier than a dryer due to the weights they contain.
A top loader must always stand alone. Even placing shelves above a top-loading washing machine can be problematic due to the fact that the flap takes up space.
Placing a changing pad on top of a top loader is also limited. For one thing, the surface area is often not identical to standard front loaders, and for another, the changing pad would have to be removed every time the machine is washed. Top loaders can certainly be placed on wash platforms.
However, it must be noted and taken into account that the loading height will then also increase not insignificantly. This will not be tragic during filling. However, it can become a test of nerves when unloading if there is still a single sock at the very bottom of the drum.
Small load volume
Of course, top-loading washing machines with comparatively large load volumes (kilograms of dry laundry per wash cycle) can also be found on the market. However, most top-loaders are aimed at the target group of small households and therefore have a load volume of 4.5 or 5.5 kilos.
This means that users in a small household do not have to collect laundry forever before it is worth firing up a washing machine. Of course, large washing machines now have the ability to accurately measure and dose the amount, soiling and detergent consumption.
But who never gets 12 kilos of laundry together, for which is also not worth such a huge washing machine.
Difficult to plan into the kitchenette
Top loaders cannot be easily planned under a countertop due to their upward opening. Since they cannot be “placed underneath” like front loaders, they have to be placed in the kitchen next to the kitchen unit or individually. This quickly makes them look like foreign bodies in the kitchen planning.
Since the connection points are often located in the middle of the kitchen unit, a top loader is often not even possible. This is something that should be considered before making a purchase. Otherwise, the worktop would have to be cut out at this point, or the washing machine would not open at all.
Nevertheless, top loaders can also be found in kitchens. They stand alone or next to a free-standing refrigerator and are planned separately from the kitchen unit.
No shelf space on the washing machine
Many front-loader owners have all their detergent stored on a shelf above the washing machine, or place it directly on top of the washing machine. This works great for modern machines, which themselves don’t move as much when they spin. However, this does not work with top-loaders.
This should be taken into account when planning, because here you need a shelf or storage space next to the machine. What seems logical at first can quickly negate any calculated space savings.

Less stress on the seals
The seals of a top loader are not only smaller than those of a front loader (the seal of a porthole is also more elaborately manufactured). They are also exposed to less stress. By closing from the top, less pressure is exerted on the seals and they are subjected to less stress.
This increases their durability. In addition, the seals of a top loader are much cheaper when replaced. This is because the porthole seal, for example, is much larger, requires more material and is more elaborately manufactured.
Types of Top Load Washing Machines
The types of top-loading washing machines differ in the type of drum. In tub washing machines, which are mainly found in Australia, New Zealand, North America and parts of Asia, the container remains unmoved and the laundry is virtually agitated.
If you find a top loader in Central Europe, it usually has a moving drum that is held and rotated by one or two bearings during the washing process.
Tub washing machine
Tub machines consist of a tub and a stirring bar mounted in the center, which moves the laundry in the suds. The tub itself, unlike models with a moving drum, is firmly attached to the housing. At the same time, they have the advantage and disadvantage that there are fewer centrifugal forces in the machine itself during washing. This makes the machines incredibly light, because weights can be largely dispensed with.
At the same time, however, it also makes washing efficiency and, above all, spin-drying programs comparatively inefficient. Tub washers consume a lot more water and electricity compared to a standard top loader or even front loaders because of their design.
Since the laundry is moved less than in a drum washing machine, more time and water is needed, often in combination with more aggressive detergents, to achieve the same washing results.
In addition, the mechanical action of the wash arm puts more strain on the laundry than a moving drum washing machine. In the case of bras, garments with ribbons and long tails, the use of a laundry bag is necessary here, as such items otherwise quickly become caught in the washing arm.
Top load washer with moving drum
The disadvantages of tub washing machines are at the same time the advantages of a top loader with moving drum. Because of the high physical effect on the laundry, usually less detergent, water and electricity is needed. This is also the reason why, especially in regions with a high level of environmental awareness, more top loaders with a moving drum are traded and sold than those with a fixed tub.
Top loaders with moving drum use the same technology as front loaders with and without porthole. The drum is rotated on bearings and the laundry is thus moved through the suds. To pre-dry the laundry or prevent it from coming out of the machine dripping wet, centrifugal forces are used during spinning to drive the water out of the laundry and out of the holes in the drum.
The laundry moves completely freely in the drum, can get tangled if necessary, but has no washing arm or the like around which tights and ribbons could wrap.
Both tub washers and top loaders with moving drums have countless variations on the market. Thus, the agitator arms and their agitating technology are just as different as the various types of drums, some of which have small holes, while others have a permeable membrane or slots for water drainage.
How are Top Load Washing Machines tested?
Top-loading washing machines are subjected to the same or similar test criteria as other washing machines in general tests. There may be some differences in the handling or operation category. Otherwise, the criteria are actually almost identical:
The energy efficiency classes A+++ to D are intended to enable customers to compare energy efficiency on the basis of a uniform scale in addition to the manufacturers’ promotional designations. European manufacturers of large kitchen and household appliances are obliged to stick such a scale, including the categorization of their own appliance, on the appliances for sale.
A+++ is currently the best energy efficiency class, D the worst. The graphic representation of the energy-saving classes is based on the traffic light system in various colored gradations.
Green saves energy (A+++), red is an energy guzzler (D). Dishwashers and washing machines now have to be at least class A+ to obtain market approval.
In addition to the energy efficiency classes, the water consumption is also indicated on the washing machines. Here, however, comparison is actually more difficult. This is because the manufacturers sometimes give annual data, sometimes data per wash load or average data.
If you are interested in a specific manufacturer and its models, you can certainly use the data as comparative values, but they are often just confusing and have to be extrapolated by test portals or independent testers.
Modern washing machines are able to estimate the laundry so well that the water consumption is reduced once again. This is done by weighing the laundry and scanning and estimating the degree of soiling. Depending on how much laundry and how dirty it is, it can then automatically decide whether and how much water and detergent to add. Although this is specified in tests, it is usually not additionally taken into account.
Similar to water consumption, energy consumption is not indicated uniformly on all appliances.

The information is given in kilowatt hours (kWh). Since approximately 5% of household electricity consumption is due to washing clothes, small differences in consumption per wash load actually make a notable difference in annual consumption.
This means that it is well worth taking a look at the energy consumption of the washing machine. It’s just important to consult the right numbers when comparing.
In tests, these are either all calculated down or up to an annual consumption or the consumption per wash load.
Wringing out during machine washing is done by the spin cycle. The water is spun out of the laundry drum by fast revolutions. The faster the revolutions, the greater the centrifugal forces that push the water outward, the drier the laundry.
However, the higher the speed, the higher the load on the laundry. Therefore, it is not always advisable to spin at full speed. Especially for delicate materials such as wool or silk, the spin cycle may be omitted completely.
Most washing machines that can be found in stores today have spin speeds starting at 1300 revolutions per minute (rpm). It is not uncommon to find models up to 1600 rpm. High spin speeds are particularly important if the laundry is to come out of the machine as dry as possible.
Dry laundry saves time when air drying and energy when using the dryer. The higher the possible revolutions, the less water or moisture the washed laundry will still contain.
The load volume or capacity of top-loading washing machines is rather small compared to front-loaders or other washing machine models. One reason for this is that top-loaders are often placed in the bathroom, where the available space is limited. From a purely technical point of view, top loaders are certainly possible with a capacity of 8 or 9 kilograms of dry laundry.
However, such models are rather rare or even impossible to find, simply because they are not or rarely in demand on the market. Not everyone needs a large washing machine. Therefore, the load volume in tests is difficult to compare 1:1. It is included to make it easier to choose the right washing machine. However, a larger load volume does not simultaneously mean a better rating in washing machine tests.
The volume in operation is specified in decibels and measured according to certain criteria in tests. The manufacturer’s specifications can be used or the user’s own measurements can be taken. In the case of the latter, however, it must be ensured in tests that measurements are taken under the same conditions and at the same intervals.
Two volume levels are often specified: one for washing and one for spinning. The quieter the washing machine is during both, the better the rating in tests. However, it must be taken into account that the volume increases somewhat with the age of the washing machine.

- Eco mode: through this mode, the machine is supposed to work more ecologically. The eco mode is usually adjustable by an additional button. In some models, it does not work with every program. The various manufacturers have not always implemented the Eco mode technically 100% the same. Basically, this button extends the washing time in order to not have to wash at such high temperatures overall and still achieve the same washing result.
- Automatic volume control: Not all automatic volume controls are the same. Washing machines from high-priced manufacturers, for example, sometimes analyze to within 500 grams how much laundry is in the washing machine. Detergent and water are then metered according to this. - Unbalance detection: If the drum has an unbalance, the noise level during spinning is increased many times over and the engine is overstressed. This is because even rotation is simply no longer possible. Since an unbalance usually develops insidiously, the user does not always recognize it immediately, because the associated noise level also becomes louder insidiously and sometimes unnoticed. To prevent major damage to the bearings and the motor, many washing machines (for example, those made by Miele, Bosch and Siemens) have an unbalance detection function and an associated error display.
- Start time preselection: The start time preselection is a very practical special function, especially for working people. Because if the washing machine is turned on in the morning, the laundry will still be wet in the machine for 6 or 7 hours in the worst case during an eight-hour workday. This can lead to musty odors and loss of the cleanliness feeling of the laundry. Colored laundry can still stain in this way. That is why many washing machine models offer the option of setting an individual start time. - Aqua Stop: The Aqua Stop is a safety feature and is now not only desired but required by many landlords and homeowner’s insurance companies. An Aqua Stop is supposed to automatically stop the feed to the machine in case of problems with the water drainage in order to prevent water damage. This stop can be retrofitted. Most manufacturers deliver it however meanwhile directly integrated into the washing machine.

Of course, the washing result is not undecisive for the purchase decision. What good is the most fantastic and modern washing machine if it does not clean the laundry satisfactorily. In order to make an accurate comparison, however, some parameters have to be right.
For a fair comparison, the detergent, the degree of soiling of the laundry and the dosage according to the instructions must be right.
This is because different detergents would definitely result in different washing results. Many testers count efficiency as part of the washing result and then summarize these results in the rating. Basically, it can be said that the cleaner the laundry with the same detergent and wash program, the better the rating in the test.
What should I look for when buying a top load washing machine?
In general, when buying so-called “white appliances”, i.e. large kitchen appliances, you have to pay attention to a few things that you could well disregard when buying a TV set, for example. The reason for this is that these large appliances simply have a longer service life on average and therefore also require longer maintenance:
What do I really need?
Bigger, faster, better … a washing machine should be one thing above all: tailored to the user. It’s no use if the top loader has a huge capacity, but a single household only has 7 kilos of laundry once a week, which also has to be divided into cooked, colored and white laundry.
On the other hand, it doesn’t make sense to buy a tiny washing machine when you know that curtains and bedding won’t even begin to fit inside. Needs should be carefully assessed and evaluated before buying.
After all, family circumstances change and it makes little sense to buy a new washing machine every two or three years because of a new living situation. Usually it is the healthy middle course that brings a good solution.
The available space
A washing machine can be located in different places in the house. Some households have a utility room or a laundry room. Then the size and even the appearance of the washing machine almost does not matter. However, if you want to put the machine in the bathroom or kitchen, you should first measure exactly where it will stand and consider which model is suitable.
Of course, some parameters can be changed. For example, additional space can be created in the bathroom by adding a platform. But if the floor space for the washing machine is limited, it makes no sense to buy a device that is larger than the available space.
To the top should be measured accurately. For example, if the machine is to be located on a sloping roof or under the therme, it is necessary to take into account the space for opening the flap.
Spare parts availability
At first glance, this sounds banal. But it is a problem worth mentioning for washing machines of all kinds. As a basic principle, if a model or brand is widespread and has been on the market for a long time, you can assume that enough spare parts have also been produced and can later be taken from old appliances. The more exotic the manufacturer and the machine itself, the more difficult it will be to obtain spare parts in a few years.
In terms of budget, construction and planning, washing machines, dryers, refrigerators and freezers are designed to have a longer service life than, for example, a console, a television or a laptop. On the one hand, this is due to the fact that the intervals in which there are decisive innovations and new developments in this area are significantly longer.
On the other hand, the replacement of these devices is always associated with a logistical effort, which one is reluctant to accept more often than really necessary.
However, this also means that it is all the more annoying when one of these devices is defective. The guarantee and warranty given on individual devices actually varies greatly, despite legal requirements. Connections and length of hoses
A washing machine needs a fresh water and a waste water connection. The fresh water does not have to be warm, because the washing machine heats the water itself. If you do not have such a connection in the bathroom, you can pull connections from and to the sink.
The length of the supplied connection hoses is usually limited by default. Of course, they can be extended by additional purchase or simply replace them with longer hoses. However, it makes little sense to extend the hoses endlessly.

Only a few people have the opportunity to buy a washing machine in a specialty store and simply take it with them, like other devices. The only major differences in accessories are between industrial machines and those for private households.
The detergent is probably a matter of taste. Meanwhile, both powder, liquid detergent, as well as tabs and so-called pods can be found on the market. When using liquid detergents alone, you should be careful, because they usually leave a layer in the hoses and seals, which does not occur with pure powder.
Otherwise, the decision depends on the color of the laundry (detergents for white, dark, black and colored), the material of the laundry (for example, wool, cotton, synthetic), the personally preferred smell (now there are almost all odors on the market (from fresh to bubble gum and floral fragrance), the price and handling (measure and dose or just open and throw in).
Not only is the type of detergent important, so is the amount. By the way, the dosage of the detergent is very crucial for the washing result. Unfortunately, using too much detergent per wash cycle is not only expensive, but also harmful to the environment.
Also for this reason, pods and tabs are not always recommended when washing, because they are simply very often overdosed, because they must provide a good washing result in any case. Both liquid and powder detergents should therefore be measured at least once exactly how much detergent is needed. Statistically, most households use significantly too much in every wash cycle.
Laundry that is washed without fabric softener gets a kind of drying rigidity during drying. Fabric softeners are chemical agents to prevent this rigidity and keep the laundry flexible and soft.
Fabric softeners belong to the so-called washing aids. Some of them contain additional agents that are supposed to prevent static electricity and prevent or mask odors.
The disadvantage of fabric softeners is mainly experienced when using towels that have been treated with fabric softeners. This is because fabric softeners are made from vegetable and animal fats and are therefore water repellent. This means that although the towels are soft, they are nowhere near as absorbent as they would be without fabric softener.
