Frequently Asked Questions: Tower Fans
What is a tower fan?
The tower fan is a special variant of the classic stand fan. As the name suggests, the device has a tower-like appearance, which has the advantage that little floor space is required. There are no propellers. Instead, the tower fan sucks in air through an opening on the back and then blows it out to the front.
Thanks to this principle of operation, the fans are very efficient and suitable even for large rooms. Furthermore, tower fans convince with their very modern look, which easily fits into any style of living. The tower fan is also known as a column fan or a tower fan.
How does a tower fan work?
Inside the tower fan is a blade-like impeller, which sucks in and swirls the air by means of negative pressure. The air is cooled, which improves the indoor climate. Most models also have an oscillation function, which means that they can be pivoted and thus fully ventilate even large rooms.
Technically, tower fans are so-called cross-flow fans. Here, the fan axis is perpendicular to the airflow, which is why the devices blow air into the room from the floor to the top of the device. The corner of a room is therefore the best location for a tower fan.
Does a tower fan also have disadvantages compared to a normal fan?
Basically, a tower fan is more suitable for everyday use than a conventional stand fan or table fan, because it takes up much less space and also looks very modern. Unfortunately, only a few tower fans are adjustable in height as well as in inclination. Instead, the air is almost always blown out at waist level.
Another disadvantage of the tower fans is the slightly higher price. However, since the power consumption is lower and the devices are also extremely efficient, it is still a worthwhile investment. However, just like other types of fans, the tower fan has little effect on the room temperature. The air is merely set in motion and swirled, creating a pleasant indoor climate.
Unlike an air conditioner, however, the air is not cooled down. Only when you position the fan so that it blows the air from a cool room into a warmer one does it have an effect similar to that of an air conditioner.
How do I position the tower fan correctly?
In order for the tower fan to develop its full potential, it is extremely important to position it correctly. Because: If it is positioned incorrectly, muscle tension or chills can be the result. Therefore, position the device so that the air only reaches you indirectly, so that you are not exposed to drafts.
It is also advisable not to operate the fan permanently at the highest airflow setting. If you also want to benefit from pleasantly cool air at night, go for a device with a timer function so that the fan does not run all night and drive up electricity costs. During the night, the temperature in the bedroom cools down on its own anyway, so it is usually sufficient to run the fan for just a few hours.
Basically, the tower fan is best positioned in a corner of the room, because only then it is guaranteed that the largest possible area is supplied with fresh air.
What is the power consumption of a tower fan?
Tower fans usually have an output of between 40 and 60 watts. If you want to know exactly how much power your device consumes, you can use an energy meter, which is plugged in between the socket and the power plug of the fan. The meter will show you the current consumption, so you will be well informed about the electricity costs incurred.
Regarding the power consumption of your tower fan, you should also check whether the device has a stand-by mode and, if so, whether it can be deactivated. If it is not possible to turn off the fan completely so that no electricity is consumed, we recommend that you use an outlet with a switch.
But there’s more you can do to keep your column fan’s power consumption in check: Prefer low power settings and turn the unit off when you leave the room for long periods of time. And: Place the fan where it will provide the best benefit and ensure sufficient cooling even at low speed.
Advantages of tower fans
A tower fan offers numerous advantages over a classic stand fan with propeller. For example, tower fans are extremely space-saving and can therefore be easily accommodated even in small rooms. Thanks to the compact design, the room is not too dominated by the fan – on the contrary: tower fans usually convince with a modern, appealing look and can therefore even function as a decorative object. Furthermore, the devices are characterized by a low noise level and high energy efficiency.
Therefore, they can be used for a longer period of time and even overnight in the bedroom. Most tower fans also have the distinct advantage that the user can usually choose between different settings. For example, many models have a timer function and/or are equipped with various wind programs.
To enable the user to control the various functions from the comfort of the sofa or bed, a remote control is often part of the scope of delivery. Parents of small children and pet owners also make the right choice with a tower fan, because: Since there is no visible propeller, maximum safety is guaranteed.
Types of tower fans
Tower fans with and without swivel function
When buying a tower fan, you can choose between models with or without oscillation function. A device with switchable oscillation is especially useful if you want to evenly supply a larger room with cool air. Whether in the living room, bedroom or office, a tower fan with a swivel function is able to lower the room temperature evenly throughout the room and in this way provide a comfortable feel-good climate
When it comes to the number of degrees by which the fan can be pivoted, however, there are great differences, so a thorough comparison is worthwhile here as well.
Tower fans with and without timer
If you want to use your tower fan to help you sleep easier when summer temperatures are high, you should go for a model with a built-in timer. These devices automatically turn off after a preset time – for example, after two, four or six hours – so you don’t have to worry about using too much electricity.
In addition, with a column fan with timer, it is not so tragic if you forget to turn off the device once.
Tower fans with and without wind programs
Tower fans that have different wind programs allow you to optimally adjust the wind strength to your individual needs. Most models are equipped with at least three speed levels. In addition, however, devices with a breeze function or various nature programs, in which the natural wind behavior is imitated, are also offered in the trade.
It should be noted, however, that while high wind speeds can be a real boon on hot summer days – you should not expose yourself to the strong airflow for too long to avoid health effects (colds, conjunctivitis). In addition, fans operated at the highest level are almost always very noisy.
How are tower fans tested?
User-friendliness played a major role in our large tower fan product test. Especially when a device has numerous setting options, it is extremely important that it can be operated without lengthy study of the user manual. Most models have simple switches, while some are equipped with a display.
Especially convenient are tower fans with remote control. Again, however, only a clearly designed remote control with large, smooth-running buttons is really suitable for everyday use and user-friendly.
The noise level of tower fans is usually lower than that of classic pedestal fans. This is mainly because there is no external propeller and the impeller is housed inside the fan’s casing instead. However, tower fans can also get quite loud from time to time – especially if the user opts for the highest speed setting.
Our big tower fan test therefore also took a look at the decibel levels of the various devices. Especially all those who want to use the tower fan while concentrating on their work in the office or in the bedroom should go for a model that is as quiet as possible. However, it should be noted that while some tower fans are exceptionally quiet during operation, they emit a beeping sound when switched off.
So, if you want to use the device while falling asleep and have programmed the timer, the beep may wake you up again. However, this is only the case with some devices. Others emit sounds during operation, for example when the speed of the airflow is adjusted.
Tower fans are usually a little more expensive than normal fans with propellers. Therefore, it is especially important that they are robust and durable so that they provide the user with fresh air for many years. In the course of our large tower fan product test, the materials used were therefore scrutinized just as much as the workmanship.
After all, only a tower fan with high-quality workmanship can withstand the demands of everyday use for as long as possible. Most manufacturers use high-quality plastic for the casing, but aluminum is also often used.
What should I look for when buying a tower fan?
The power of a tower fan is usually between 40 and 60 watts. How powerful the device should be ultimately depends on the size of the room in which the fan will mainly be used. After all, a low-power model will have little effect in a large room. On the other hand, the wind caused by a very powerful device could be perceived as unpleasant in a rather small room.
In addition, it should be remembered that a tower fan with a high wattage will also consume more electricity. Especially if the device is to run regularly for several hours or even all night, it is sometimes worth giving preference to a fan with a lower wattage. Often, the higher the quality and price of a tower fan, the lower the power consumption.
The air circulation of a tower fan is specified by the manufacturer in cubic meters per hour. The value tells how much air is moved by the fan per hour. For satisfactory room ventilation, multiply the room air volume (room width x room length x room height) by four.
Example: If you want to ventilate a room measuring 3 x 3 x 3 meters (= 27 cubic meters), you should go for a tower fan whose air circulation is at least 108 cubic meters per hour. However, the values are usually much higher: some high-performance models even circulate more than 3,000 cubic meters of air per hour.
The differences in noise levels are generally not very great. However, an increase of three decibels is already perceived as a doubling of the volume. Especially if you want to use the tower fan in the study or in bedrooms, it is therefore worth looking for a device with the lowest possible dB figure.
The same applies if you want to listen to the radio or watch a program on TV while the fan is running. Here are a few values for orientation: A normal conversation corresponds to about 60 dB, a hair dryer, on the other hand, is already 90 dB loud. The decibel level of most tower fans is between 50 and 70 dB.
However, the actual volume also depends on the selected airflow setting: While most models are pleasantly quiet at low speed, they can quickly be perceived as annoying when the highest power level is selected.
Oscillation is a practical additional feature of many tower fans. What is meant is the automatic pivoting in a range between mostly 60 and 90 degrees. Some models can even be swiveled by up to 180 degrees, so that even large rooms can be reliably supplied with fresh air.
The oscillation function can usually be deactivated at the touch of a button or with the help of a remote control, so that the wind is then only blown out in one direction. Unfortunately, swiveling the fan is often accompanied by annoying squeaking and rattling noises.
If you want to buy a device with a swivel function, it is therefore worth paying special attention to the workmanship.
Most tower fans have several speed levels, so you can vary the wind strength depending on the temperature and individual preferences. In addition, specialty stores offer models with various additional functions. For example, there are tower fans with integrated timer, with overheating protection or with the possibility to adjust the device in height.
A child safety lock is also useful. Often, the remote control is already included in the scope of delivery, so that you can control the fan comfortably from your desk, sofa or bed. However, only you can decide whether or which additional features are useful for you personally.
Material & Workmanship
Tower fans are usually made largely of plastic. This material has the advantage of being durable and at the same time very long-lasting. High-quality workmanship is at least as important as the material used. Thus, a good tower fan is characterized by stability and a high degree of ease of care.
All elements of the fan should be easily accessible so that they can be easily cleaned of dust and dirt when necessary.
Dimensions & Weight
If you have decided on a particular tower fan, check before buying whether it also fits your ideas in terms of size and weight. Is the dimensions of the device such that it fits well into the intended space? Is the tower fan lightweight and portable so that it can be used on the go?
Most models weigh between 2.5 and five kilograms – however, tower fans are also offered in stores that weigh seven kilograms and more, making them relatively heavy and therefore difficult to transport.
Tower Fan Accessories
Tower fans are often equipped with a remote control. This makes it possible to operate the device comfortably from the sofa, desk or bed and, for example, to adjust the air speed individually to one’s own wishes. If the remote control is not part of the scope of delivery, it can be retrofitted by many manufacturers.
If you decide on a model with remote control, pay attention to the user-friendliness: the buttons should be clearly arranged and sufficiently large. It is also useful to check where the sensor for the remote control is located on the fan. If it is too low on the device, you must take this into account when positioning the fan so that the remote control actually serves its purpose.
Buying an additional protective cover is especially useful if you plan to use your tower fan exclusively in the summer months. The cover allows you to store the device protected from dust, so that it is immediately ready for use again next year.
However, even with a protective cover, you should only store your tower fan in a dry place.
Some tower fans have a filter that must be replaced at regular intervals. You can find out whether this is the case with your favorite device from the respective manufacturer. It’s also best to find out what the filters cost before you buy, to avoid any unpleasant surprises.
However, most tower fans are equipped with a permanent filter anyway, which only needs to be cleaned every now and then.
