The Best UHD TVs in 2021

Author: Robert Wilson

Electronics & Peripherals Expert

UHD TVs or 4k TVs currently deliver the best picture. Sure, 8k has already been introduced, but tech experts currently advise against buying it. As external practical tests report, OLED is superior to all other screens (QLED, LED).

However, our evaluation of customer reviews shows that many buyers are also satisfied with a slightly older UHD TV, because prices drop significantly after just one year.

Frequently Asked Questions UHD TVs

What is a UHD TV?

The UHD TV is a device with a very high resolution. A TV or monitor can play videos or movies with a resolution of 3,840 x 2,160 pixels. A 4K standard actually uses 4,096 x 2,160 pixels here, but most producers already speak of a 4K TV at 3,840 x 2,160 pixels as well.

The minimal difference is not visible in a practical test for most users without it. The terms Ultra HD or UHD for short are often used here. In principle, UHD TVs do not differ from classic devices in terms of higher resolution.

How does a UHD TV work?

The functionality of a UHD TV in the practical test is precisely similar to that of a usual HD TV. Besides the resolution, there can be differences in the hardware inside the TV now and then.

That is why UHD TVs often have powerful multi-core processors with enough RAM. This equipment is also found in classic TVs, but they are not as common there as in a UHD TV.

Content reaches a UHD TV via a TV connection or an external device. Additional suppliers can be connected via HDMI or Scart as desired. These include Blu-Ray players, receivers, game consoles, computers and smartphones.

In a UHD TV test, there were no differences to a normal TV. However, an HDMI input according to the 2.0 standard is necessary for content in Ultra HD resolution.

This is the only way to use the full resolution even at high frame rates, and this detail should not be neglected especially when buying a new TV.

Advantages of a UHD TV

The definitely biggest advantage of a UHD TV is the higher resolution found in the UHD TV test. Even in voluminous devices, individual pixels are no longer noticeable at short viewing distances. The picture of a UHD TV is even clearer and sharper, and minimal details are better visible in the test. This is very pronounced in sports events or panorama shots. However, all content benefits from the higher resolution.

At this point, content is still very sparse for a UHD TV. The TV broadcasters are still partly busy with the conversion to HD and an upgrade to UHD will certainly not happen that quickly. Only the public broadcasters showed selected matches in Ultra HD for the 2017 European Soccer Championship. In addition, series and movies are available in a high resolution at several streaming providers like Amazon Prime or Netflix.

Rather, Blu-rays are offered in 4K, but this requires a 4K-capable player. The new media cannot be played on old devices because they have a higher storage capacity. Fortunately, UHD TVs can also play low-resolution content without any problems. Thus, nothing stands in the way of enjoying TV channels in HD and SD as well as image information from the computer or game console.

During the external determination of the UHD TV test winner, UHD TVs often offered a function for upscaling the picture data. When upscaling, the TV’s calculation automatically provides the material in full Ultra HD resolution from a low-resolution picture.

Therefore, a UHD TV can be considered a complete replacement for an HD TV without any restrictions.

Especially when buying a new device, there is more future-proofing in contrast to a Full HD TV. 8K TVs will certainly still need a few years until they are presented.

Types of UHD TVs

UHD TVs are already presented in a wide selection. There is certainly something suitable for every demand. Classic UHD TVs only offer a higher resolution, otherwise they do not differ from conventional TVs in the UHD TV test. This might be a disadvantage since there are no current interfaces and thus not all options for the material in UHD quality can be used. The devices are already offered at a low price and are partly cheaper than some Full HD TVs with extensive features.

If preferably movies and series are watched with a UHD TV and the use of apps and similar services takes a back seat, these devices are worth a look. UHD TVs in the mid-range already have much more powerful hardware than the tested HD TVs. These are almost exclusively Smart TVs. Thus, a UHD TV, usually a smartphone, can connect to the Internet and run apps. This allows the TV to provide playback of services like Netflix or YouTube without additional devices.

The resolution is the same as in inexpensive UHD TVs, but differences in the gradients of color, sharpness and other characteristics are apparent. In this area, the price-performance ratio is balanced. In the UHD TV test, there were not only differences in the equipment in the top class, but also in the use of panels. Some producers prefer LED technology, which is already used in other TVs.

There are also models with a so-called OLED display. This technology uses organic components. They are self-luminous and background lighting is not necessary. One advantage, the black levels remain unmatched and the corresponding models are very high-priced and not interesting for every budget.

The UHD TV test showed a rich selection of different screen sizes. You can certainly find the suitable device between 50-inch TVs in the test up to 80-inch TVs. The best diagonal depends on the individual needs.

The seating distance is a particularly important issue for UHD TVs. A UHD TV tends to be sharper with a smaller screen diagonal. Individual pixels are more minimal and closer together. In the practical test, they were barely visible even at minimum distance.

Therefore, smaller UHD TVs in the test are interesting for those who sit less than two meters in front of a device. Larger diagonals for screens only make sense in correspondingly voluminous rooms and seating distances and was proven in the UHD TV test.

A UHD TV with 60 inches still shows a crystal-clear picture and a concise screen size even at a distance of four to five meters in the test.

How are UHD TVs tested?

In a UHD TV test, all devices have to pass an extensive test range. If a TV is convincing in every category of the practical test, it can compete for the coveted part UHD TV comparison winner.

In the following, we will share with you the important features that occur in a UHD TV test:

Image Quality

When buying a UHD TV, the user usually expects an excellent picture quality. Therefore, this area is undoubtedly one of the most important in the UHD TV test. Every single UHD TV is subjected to an in-depth test in a practical test.

The illumination, color values, black levels and numerous additional details play a special role. The devices were not only tested with material in UHD quality, but also the content with lower resolution was checked.

Sound Quality

Numerous users do not need their own home theater and rely on built-in speakers in a TV set. In a UHD TV test, the sound is precisely tracked and it is determined which device is actually convincing in this respect.

Various sources like movies, music and games are used in the practical test. There should be a clear difference between trebles and mids. At no time should there be any overdrive, while basses have to produce a powerful sound.

In addition, a corresponding volume level is required to understand everything without problems in busy areas with open windows.

Operation

Even a top-of-the-line UHD TV is of little use if the buyer does not know how to use the device. Analyzing the menu navigation and other components is also on the agenda in the test. At best, we simply find our way around and the help of the user manual is completely dispensed with. A good translation is important here, which does without incomprehensible expressions.

Connectivity

In this area, the focus is on connecting a UHD TV with external devices. That’s why suitable connections are especially necessary for this goal. Even inexpensive devices should have at least two HDMI ports. The more connections, the better.

Built-in tuners for cable and satellite are also a plus. This eliminates the need for an additional receiver. It is also checked whether a smooth function between the connection with set-top boxes, Blu-Ray players , game consoles and other devices is given and thereby the quality of the picture turns out.

In addition, the question of how a certain UHD TV can be connected to the home network and thus to the Internet is answered. For example, WiFi or Ethernet are available for this.

Features

UHD TVs rarely do without additional functions to ensure the TV experience. Smart TVs, for example, offer the user numerous apps. Other models offer built-in functions like picture-in-picture. This allows two different programs to be watched at the same time.

The UHD TV Test not only shows the functionality of these features, but whether it makes sense to use them at all. Another feature is the good or bad integration of the features.

Power Consumption

Of course, a UHD TV requires more energy than a Full HD TV in comparison. Nevertheless, a UHD TV should use electricity from the socket sparingly. Not only the environment is spared, but also the user’s budget. The UHD TV test precisely determines the amount of power consumption in different use cases.

Quality & Design

In this area, the display does not play a role and the case is focused on. Particular emphasis is placed on the noble materials here. Good and robust workmanship with minimal gaps is also documented. Excellent values in this area not only show a positive visual effect, but also extend the lifespan of a UHD TV.

Many an inexpensive TV turned out to be an expensive bad buy when workmanship flaws cause a malfunction after a short period of time. Therefore, no one should not consider the point when buying.

Brightness

Brightness is an important factor, especially for TVs with LCD technology. Users only benefit from a good picture quality and a high resolution when the picture is really perceived.

For trouble-free operation in a bright room on a cloudless summer day, every UHD TV must not fall below a certain value. If the TV automatically assimilates its brightness to the environment, there are plus points.

This eliminates the need for readjustment and makes handling significantly easier and more convenient for the user.

What should I look for when buying a UHD TV?

The main thing is that a UHD TV should be geared to the personal needs. There is no device available that is definitely best suited for every type of user. A high picture quality should be available. However, those who do not want to invest too much have to live with a middle ground. In a UHD TV test, the screen diagonal and especially the sitting distance are interesting. The greater the distance to the TV, the higher the screen size can be.

On the other hand, it makes no sense to use a 65-inch UHD TV when the sofa is only two meters away from the TV. In terms of features, everything is based on personal needs. Smart TVs show their versatility during daily use. Nevertheless, it is not worth paying a higher price for such a UHD TV if the features are not actually needed. If a Blu-Ray is played with a UHD TV every now and then, a tradition-bound device is best served and this is reflected in lower acquisition costs.

Before making a purchase, you have to make sure that a UHD TV can work with all devices without any problems. Here, receivers, Blu-Ray players or older devices like VHS recorders are up for discussion. If the connection to a new UHD TV is missing, the user is immediately frustrated. When checking the product reviews and data sheets, it should be ensured that all components from one’s own living room can be connected to the intended UHD TV.

Finally, price is a significant issue when buying a UHD TV. In the meantime, some models are already available for a low price and the technology is only reserved for users with a corresponding wallet. Caution is advised, especially with cheap UHD TVs. Partially, the picture quality of UHD TVs is not recommendable and the advantages of UHD are almost imperceptible due to negative color characteristics and a less than optimal illumination.

Nevertheless, there are also some UHD TVs available that have completed a remarkably good picture in different UHD TV tests despite a low price.

It is important to read product reviews carefully, and only UHD TVs that meet a certain minimum of quality should make the shortlist.

UHD TV Accessories

A useful companion for the UHD TV is a Blu-Ray player with support for native movie a 4K. This will play the content in the best quality.

Some content in UHD quality is already available on the Internet. Without additional hardware, a Smart TV can retrieve the content and are not comparable with a Blu-Ray Regarding quality.

The purchase of a universal remote control is recommended for simple operation. An advantage, this remote control can be configured freely according to individual wishes. This also allows several devices to be operated at the same time. Only one remote control is necessary in the living room.

For the right connection, a suitable cable is necessary. If HDMI cables are already available, they are actually sufficient to connect old TVs with Full HD specifications.

The sound plays a special role next to the picture. A good surround system is an excellent companion for an HD TV and the overall sound quality is improved.
