What is an upright freezer?

So, depending on which variant it is, you can’t always see the freezer from the outside.
How does an upright freezer work?
The operation of the freezers from a test focuses on freezing. By freezing to – 18 degrees Celsius and sometimes more, the food can be used much longer than if you store it in the refrigerator. Nevertheless, you should not rely on the fact that the food in the freezer will never spoil. For the different types of meat, there are tables that indicate how many months they can remain frozen without fear of spoilage. Basically, depending on the type of meat, we are talking about a six to eight month shelf life in the freezer.
The term frozen food refers to all foods that have undergone the freezing process. This freezing should take place as quickly as possible to prevent freezer burn from forming. If freezing is slow, instead of tiny, harmless ice crystals, much larger ice particles are formed, which can destroy the cells. While this need not affect tolerance, it definitely affects the taste of the food. In contrast, quickly frozen products are correspondingly fresher when you defrost them again and retain their vitamins.
Blast freezing is an important function, but only the modern freezer test winners provide for the particularly fast freezing. At strong minus temperatures, a layer is formed around the food, which prevents the valuable nutrients and the contained liquid from disappearing. For this reason, blast freezing is considered a particularly gentle preservation method.
Some freezers feature the innovative no-frost technology. This ensures that no layer of ice forms inside. These icy encrustations are familiar from classic freezers. They can drive up energy consumption because the ice has an insulating effect and demands more power from the appliance.

On the nameplate of the device, the climate class reveals the ambient temperature at which efficient operation is possible. The majority of freezers have the climate class SN, subnormal, for permissible operation at an ambient temperature of +10 to +32 degrees Celsius.
If the ambient temperature is below this range, the motor oil becomes viscous and lubrication is poor. Friction causes premature wear of the cooling mechanism.
Can refrigerant be refilled?
If the freezer cools insufficiently, it may have several causes. One of them is the loss of refrigerant. However, the advertising claims that the plastic mats completely prevent ice formation are contradicted by the opinions of several Amazon customers, whose tests showed that ice formation is only reduced.
What is causing the heat to build up on the back of my freezer?
Several tests indicate that when placing freezers, it is important to maintain a minimum distance from the wall behind it, usually ten centimeters. Only in this way can the air heated by the freezer flow away unhindered and be replaced by cool air. If this circuit is broken, the appliance can heat up, especially at the back.

In the compartments arranged one above the other, you can quickly find what you are looking for and, unlike the freezer, you do not need to search in the depths.
Freezing itself also has some advantages to offer. You don’t need any preservatives to preserve the food; nevertheless, the colors of the food are preserved as well as the aroma. The low effort is another good argument to buy a freezer. In fact, such a device can facilitate the work in the kitchen, because if you cook immediately larger portions to freeze part of them, you will have a delicious meal on the table at a later date in no time.
The energy efficiency of the modern refrigerator and freezer test winners also proves to be an important plus point. So you don’t have to fear high electricity costs if you choose a freezer of the A+++ class. Even the energy efficiency class A+ still convinces with its low power consumption.
In addition, many freezers from external tests are equipped with useful additional functions. For example, the no-frost technology saves you the hassle of defrosting and clever holders make it easy to keep the cold packs cold all the time and take them out with a flick of the wrist.

A built-in freezer fits perfectly into the kitchen area. It has the same front as the other kitchen cabinets and fits exactly into the corresponding recess. This creates a uniform image, from the base to the door handles. Those who buy a new kitchen, gladly choose such a built-in cabinet, because it saves possible difficulties with the installation.
Some freezers are prepared for installation and are sold as ready for decoration. They have a mounting frame, to which the appropriate decorative panels can be mounted. Here it is important to pay attention to the exact dimensions, both the width of the niche, and the height and depth. Before ordering such a device, you should accurately measure everything. A stand-up freezer can be placed flexibly, so it is suitable mainly for large kitchens. Often it finds its place relatively far from the sources of heat, that is, from the stove and heating. If you are looking for a freezer, the first thing you pay attention to is the size. Which device fits into the kitchen and how much capacity do you need? However, a freezer test should mainly explain the quality features in more detail, because most models are available in several dimensions.
The following product features show which selection criteria play a particularly important role in a test. In this course, we would like to present a kind of guide to prospective buyers and present the important test criteria from the external tests in detail.
Energy efficiency class
For many, energy efficiency plays the main role in household appliances. The corresponding classification provides information about the operating costs of the devices, which can save a lot of money depending on their classification. In the product description you can find the markings: A+++ is the highest class and indicates that the freezer consumes only about half less than a comparable appliance from the A+ efficiency class. An appliance in the A++ category is about in the middle with its consumption, so it consumes about 25% more than the A+ class.
We would like to go into more detail about the energy savings with an example calculation:

This starts the process of shock freezing.
Depending on the type of freezer, supercooling can also be started automatically: It starts as soon as the food is placed in the freezer. The particularly innovative refrigerators use a sensor to measure the amount of food placed in the freezer and switch off the automatic superfrost freezing function themselves when the food has frozen through after a certain time.
In a freezer test, external testers also checked the defrost function, among other things. In contrast to the earlier devices, the newer models often have integrated no-frost systems. These prevent the formation of ice in the interior of the freezers from the outset.
So it is no longer necessary to perform the time-consuming defrosting manually. Instead, the automatic defrost function ensures that the air inside remains dry. This prevents frost and ice from forming. There is also similar equipment for freezers, but here you usually can’t completely avoid defrosting. However, due to less ice formation, you don’t have to defrost the freezers as often.
With their modern technical equipment, the test winners of the freezers offer very good convenience functions. With the convenient operation, the effort can be reduced, be it during the freezing itself, the retrieval of the frozen goods or the daily handling. Among the important features in the equipment, in addition to energy efficiency and optimal storage, is good control. With a special display, you can immediately see how the temperature is set and whether you should adjust the energy consumption if necessary. Some devices have an electronic setting. Here, if necessary, a thermostat helps to control the temperature.
This regulation is particularly easy when the control panel is located on the outside of the freezer. This allows you to adjust the temperature without having to open the door.
Some freezer test winners are also equipped with preset error messages. If the temperature is too high or extremely lowered, a warning sound is triggered. Also, if the door is left open for too long, a signal may sound to remind users to close the freezer properly.
What should I look for when buying an upright freezer?
When deciding to buy a freezer, many features play a role. First of all, you need to find the appropriate size, so that the freezer fits well into the kitchen. The coordination with the other kitchen furniture also depends on the external design. In addition, the consumption balance should be right: If the freezer is often only half full, the energy consumption increases accordingly. Nevertheless, the volume should not be too small, because otherwise you can not store enough supplies.
In order to determine which volume size is suitable for the respective household, one should look into the various freezers to determine the individual space requirements. From mini freezers to XXL models, there are numerous versions to choose from. Large freezers naturally consume more electricity than the smaller versions, but they can also hold a lot more frozen food. But how much volume do you actually need?
For a single household or for two people, a compact freezer from a test is usually sufficient. If necessary, a fridge-freezer combination is also a smart choice. If you rarely reach for frozen products and freeze relatively small amounts of food, you should be able to get by with 40 liters of usable capacity per person. So for two people, a freezer with 80 liters of capacity is sufficient. However, if cooking and freezing is done frequently with more people, this should be taken into account in the usable capacity and a larger appliance category should be selected that holds 100 to 150 liters.
For a family with two children, 40 liters per person can be a bit tight, especially if the preferences are frozen pizza, French fries and ice cream. Depending on the storage, you should therefore expect 80 to 100 liters of usable capacity. Freezers up to 349 liters in size are generally large enough.
A large family will need even more volume. From 350 liters, however, there are hardly any built-in appliances for the kitchen, so you often switch to the freezer. Especially for hunters and for people who grow a lot of things in their own garden, a correspondingly large upright freezer or chest freezer is worthwhile.
Depending on the existing needs, it may also make sense to choose a device with particularly high freezing capacity. The higher the freezing capacity, the more food can be cooled down from room temperature to -18 degrees within 24 hours. This is especially important if you want to freeze a lot of things at once.
Furthermore, you should also consider your own height. If the freezers are very high, smaller people may not be able to reach the upper compartments. This means that you need a step in the kitchen if you want to get something out at the top. If a smaller cabinet is integrated into the kitchen a little further up, this problem also exists.
Energy saving use of an upright freezer
To ensure that the freezer does not consume too much electricity, you should first calculate exactly how much usable capacity you need. How many people are in the household and how high is the actual demand?
Maybe a compact appliance is enough for a family of four, if you do not have something for freezing all the time. The larger the freezers are, the more energy they consume, even if they are A+++ class appliances.
Checking the energy efficiency class is an important point anyway. Since the end of 2011, manufacturers are only allowed to sell refrigerators and freezers with the current EU energy label. This indicates how energy-efficient the appliances are through the different classes. In general, it is recommended to choose at least A+. A++ and A+++ work even more economically, which has an effect on the electricity bill on the one hand and soothes the green conscience on the other.
For particularly energy-saving operation, the modern freezers are equipped with special functions. The no-frost system prevents ice from forming on the interior walls. In some cases, manufacturers also call this function Stop-Frost or Low-Frost. Without a layer of ice, the energy-efficient cooling performance improves. That’s why it’s important to keep the humidity inside the freezer low, because increased humidity increases the risk of frost buildup.
Typically, no-freeze freezers work with cold air, which is distributed by a fan integrated inside. In addition, there is a kind of heater that provides de-icing on the cooling fins. This results in slightly higher energy consumption, but this is already taken into account in the energy efficiency class. In the end, the no-frost devices cool better and more efficiently than the comparable freezers without such a function.
Even if they are modern freezers, the ambient temperature affects the performance and energy consumption. Although the insulation is very reliable, nevertheless, with increased room temperature, the need for cooling increases. So, the appliance has to cool more often to ensure sub-zero temperatures and consumes more power accordingly. Therefore, it may make sense to place the freezer in the cooler pantry or in the basement. Right next to the stove or even next to the dishwasher, the freezer would start more often to maintain the freezing temperature.
So, on an outside wall and in the shade, far from the various heat sources such as heater or oven, the freezer is best placed. However, even if it sounds contradictory, the environment should not be too cold either.
That’s why the unit should definitely not be placed outside in the garage if you expect high sub-zero temperatures. If the ambient temperature drops below the minimum temperature of the cooling unit, the energy consumption will increase, as the cooling system will not be able to work properly. Possibly even thaw the contents, because the lubricant in the compressor can become viscous and damage the device.
An easy tip to follow to save energy is to leave no gaps if possible, but fill the freezer well. The less empty space inside the cabinet, the more power consumption is reduced because the freezer system doesn’t have to provide power to cool the empty space.
There are a few other tricks to saving smart. For example, frozen foods defrost well in the refrigerator. This takes more time than defrosting at room temperature, but the gradual defrosting in the refrigerator is very gentle. In addition, the ice-cold food cools down the temperature in the refrigerator, so it consumes less energy.
The coldness of frozen goods makes it easy for the freezer to cool: if you transport the frozen products with an insulating cool bag, the cold chain is not interrupted. At home, you pack the frozen food straight into the freezer, which does not have to provide any extra power because the products have hardly changed their temperature.
Tips for the careful use of the upright freezer
Careful treatment of the freezer ensures that it will do its job for a long time and will not show any weaknesses. Care begins with the installation of the device. The freezer must be well ventilated, i.e. have enough space to dissipate the heat it produces itself.
Therefore, the existing ventilation slots and other openings must not be covered. In addition, they should be easily accessible so that you can clean them occasionally.
If the freezer dissipates its heat via one of its outer walls, there should be enough space here. In the manufacturer’s product description, you can find the corresponding instructions for installation or positioning. Of course, the appliance must be perfectly straight. This can be easily checked with a spirit level. The freezer must not tilt to the side or forward. Even a minimal slant may cause the door to no longer close one hundred percent, and it may also cause malfunctions. If you live in an older house with slightly sloping walls, you should therefore ensure that the basic level is horizontal. This applies not only to the freezer, but also to the other kitchen appliances.
Careful handling of the freezer also refers to daily use. If the air exchange is minimized when taking out and putting in food, it will improve the energy efficiency. So you should think in advance what you want to take out or in which compartment something should be stored. Opening the cabinet door for no reason should be avoided altogether. Open it briefly, remove or store something quickly, and close the door again immediately: In this way, hardly any room air gets inside the freezer. With clever sorting, the opening time can be shortened even more. Nevertheless, you should not open and slam the door too hard, so that the seal does not suffer.
Food that heats up for a long time needs more energy later to be cooled again. That’s why you should only take them out for a short time and soon put them back in the freezer. Food that is still warm should never be placed in the refrigerator: On the one hand, this is an unnecessary waste of energy, and on the other, it creates higher humidity, which promotes the formation of an ice layer.
Whether you have an older model or a new freezer test winner, you should not neglect to check the device for possible ice deposits. It may be possible for ice to form even on the new appliances. Then it is time to defrost the freezer completely to achieve the optimal cooling performance.
In extreme cases, the ice layers can otherwise become so thick that the door seal no longer closes properly. This creates even more ice: however, you can break this vicious circle.
In certain situations, you should turn off the freezer completely. This is not only the case when defrosting. Even if you clean it, it should not continue to cool: After all, it would be nonsensical to cool the whole room while cleaning the inside walls of the freezer.
If you are going away for several weeks or even months, it is best to completely empty your refrigerators and unplug them. To prevent mold from forming, keep the door open. Wiping down the inside surfaces also helps prevent an unpleasant odor.
For cleaning the outside, a general-purpose cleaner is usually sufficient. Depending on whether it is a floor-standing unit or a built-in model, there are the appropriate cleaning agents for the respective surfaces.
Upright Freezer Accessories
For the daily use of a freezer you need certain accessories. Especially helpful is a small thermometer that displays the degree digitally or analog. With a special freezer thermometer you can be sure that the correct temperature range is displayed. With the help of such a thermometer, you can specifically control the temperature of the various foods and adjust it if necessary. If you look closely, you will notice the difference between the upper and lower compartments.
If the temperature is lower than necessary, it may be possible to reduce the freezer’s capacity in order to save energy. However, it must not get too warm, so that the frozen dishes do not thaw and possibly spoil. Some of these refrigerated thermometers come with an attachment so you can easily hook them to the inside of the door. Other models are simply placed inside the compartments. If the thermometer has a color scale, you can tell even faster if the temperature is correct.
Other important elements for the freezer are secure door seals, the right handles, matching compartments and, if necessary, edge protection and front panels. Above all, the visible parts should be matched to the design of the kitchen.
There are also various accessories for the care of freezers. Special cleaning agents can be used to gently clean the appliances. In addition, utensils such as a plastic scraper and a defrosting tray help with the occasional defrosting. With these tools, you can make this job easier.
Insulation panels can be useful to reduce the interior space. If you have a relatively large freezer that is only partially filled, they ensure that the empty space is not constantly cooled. In this way, the insulation plates reduce energy consumption.
