This is how a VPN connection works:

- This creates a so-called tunnel. A tunnel is an encrypted connection between a VPN server and a VPN client.

There is, for example, the alternative Open VPN, which is a free software used to create a virtual private network.
It works over a TLS connection and both OpenSSL or mbed TLS can be used for encryption. Open VPN is platform-independent and supports, for example, operating systems such as Linux, Solaris, Windows and macOS.

Even experts are often afraid of the correct installation of a VPN router, as there are a multitude of settings, variants, standards, protocols and providers.
The correct way to connect a VPN router depends on the device and the brand. Some VPN routers require complicated interventions in the operating system or an additional installation of additional software.
