Frequently Asked Questions: Waffle Makers

What is a waffle maker?

Anyone who loves desserts knows how versatile a waffle iron can be. A waffle iron is a device that is used in private kitchens as well as in gastronomy and with which you can make wonderful waffles and similar pastries “on your own”.

Waffle irons, with which you can even make the popular New Year’s croissants, which – similar to an ice cream cone – are crispy in consistency and peppered with aniseed grains etc., are just as popular.

No matter whether waffles, croissants or other delicacies: There are now numerous names for this kitchen appliance, with croissant irons, cake irons or clamp irons being the best known. As a rule, the waffle iron can be opened and collapsed, so that the user gives the dough on the lower side – this is made of iron just like the upper side, after which the upper side is then placed over it.

After the waffle iron is folded up, both sides of the batter mixture are heated and exposed to a mostly constant high temperature until both the top and bottom are of a pleasantly firm consistency and a golden brown color.

How does a waffle maker work?

The way a waffle iron works is very simple. A waffle iron has a top and a bottom, each made of iron. Behind the two iron discs – by the way, these can be round, angular or polygonal – there is a cable system that is supplied with energy via the power source.

In this way, the two plates heat up immediately after the power is supplied, with the heat being distributed very evenly. In this context, the corrugated structure of the iron plates is of great importance. Because there are round or angular recesses over the entire surface of the two iron plates, the heat can penetrate into these areas.

In the course of the heating process, the mostly viscous dough also gets into these depressions and experiences a change in the dough structure due to the high temperature. The dough is baked, the protein it contains changes and becomes firmer, more handy and changes from a liquid to a solid aggregate state.

Depending on the quality of the waffle iron, it can happen that the structure of the iron plates leaves something to be desired, with the consequence that the dough often sticks. In the event that the finished dough is difficult to lift off the iron plates or even bakes or burns, it may be advisable to use another, higher quality waffle iron.

Another helpful alternative is to rub the iron plates with some oil or fat before wetting them with the batter. This is to prevent the dough from burning.

In general, the way a waffle iron works is quite simple, and people made use of this “technology” as early as the Middle Ages. However, this technology has developed almost continuously over the centuries, so that today it is no longer “only” possible to use a waffle iron to make waffles from a pre-made dough, but rather the so-called waffle is now enjoying steadily growing popularity.

What are the advantages & use cases of a waffle maker?

Over the years, numerous uses have become established, and we are sure to find interesting things that can be made with a waffle iron in the future. In any case, a waffle iron is characterized by the fact that it is very easy to use and also easy to handle.

There are now countless waffle recipes, all of which can be prepared individually and as required with the waffle iron. The special thing about the application is that you only have to fold up the waffle iron and wet both iron plates with a little vegetable fat or oil.

Tip: If coconut oil is used instead of traditional sunflower or olive oil, the risk that the waffles will burn or that the dough can no longer be removed from the iron plate is reduced by around 70 percent.

As soon as the plates are hot enough, the batter is poured onto the lower plate with a large spoon. For each waffle you calculate about one to one and a half tablespoons, although this amount can vary greatly depending on the different recipes. The consistency of the dough also plays an important role in this context. After the dough has been applied in the right amount, the lid of the waffle iron is closed.

Then it is only necessary to wait about two to four minutes – depending on the device – until the dough has baked on and has reached a solid state. Ideally, the result is soft, fluffy and golden brown. When the desired consistency of the dough is reached, the lid of the waffle iron can be folded up and the finished waffle removed.

What types of waffle makers are available?

Real connoisseurs believe that the world would only be half as beautiful if it weren’t for the popular waffle irons. And they are right. How good that there are now several types of waffle irons that discerning waffle fans can benefit from. Not to mention that there are also different irons or shapes in traditional kitchen appliances.

For example, you are “spoiled for choice” between round and square waffles and there is also the option of choosing between classic heart-shaped, thinner waffles and thicker, so-called Belgian waffles. Of course, customers today can also choose whether they want a waffle iron in which they can insert the iron accordingly.

Sometimes he inserts the iron plates for the heart-shaped, sometimes the plates for the Belgian waffles. In this context, there are virtually no limits to creative power.

There are also numerous differences today when it comes to the quality or the visual properties of waffle irons. In general, however, the indispensable kitchen appliances in this category can be divided into four basic types. On the one hand, the classic waffle irons should be mentioned in this regard, on the other hand, the waffle pan is enjoying an almost constantly growing popularity.

Furthermore, the traditional moving irons are available in well-stocked specialist shops and, last but not least, there are the innovative waffle machines, where you don’t have to do anything other than fill in the batter.

Classic Waffle Makers

Commercially available waffle irons are available in different qualities. While the particularly inexpensive models, for example, still have a small drain under which a small container must be placed so that the grease and other liquids can drip into it, modern devices “can” do much more.

Such a spout is no longer available with the higher-priced waffle irons, because thanks to the innovative technologies it is no longer necessary. In addition, on the older models, as soon as the waffle is ready, a light comes on to indicate that the lid needs to be raised.

On the other hand, waffle irons are available whose lid pops open by itself as soon as the waffle has reached the desired consistency. In this respect, waffle baking is becoming easier and more time-saving than it was a few years ago.

Waffle Pan

Waffle pans are quite practical helpers in a good kitchen. They too offer attractive options for preparing waffles, although these devices do not require you to fold up a lid in order to fill in batter. Rather, you simply heat some butter in the pan and wait until it has melted.

The base has a special pattern that can vary depending on the pan model. Once the fatty liquid has heated up adequately and spread in the pan, the finished waffle batter can be added. Now you have to swivel the pan until the batter has spread all the way to the edges of the pan base.

Then you have to wait about one to two minutes before turning the half-cooked waffle with the spatula. In view of the fact that waffle baking is an extremely popular activity to make children happy or to bake something with them, the classic waffle iron offers a decisive advantage over the waffle pan: the waffle does not have to be turned first.

If children’s hands were to complete this step, there would be the risk of scalding themselves from the splashing fat or possibly dripping pan batter.

Waffle Machine

A waffle machine can be compared to a waffle iron, although it is a bit easier to use. Depending on the model, the baking time is calculated independently, even taking the volume of the dough into account. A light emitting diode provides information about the end of the baking time and the lid of the appliance rises automatically.

In addition, the nature of the iron plates is designed in such a way that the surface almost completely prevents the dough from sticking. In this respect, you benefit in many ways when using a waffle machine. However, the small drawback with these devices is the comparatively high energy consumption.

However, before purchasing the relevant products, you can explicitly find out in advance in our product reports how the power consumption of the waffle machines you are considering is actually going.

Not to be forgotten is the fact that there are now a number of practical waffle irons or waffle machines with which you can make donuts, crepes or even muffins.

The so-called double waffle irons are also worth mentioning. This means you can bake two waffles in just one baking process. In this way, the baking time can be reduced by half. A decisive advantage when it comes to making a large number of connoisseurs or waffle fans happy.

What functions do I have to look out for when buying a waffle maker?

The more functional a waffle iron – regardless of what type – is, the more attractive it becomes in terms of usability. Certainly, particularly inexpensive devices are particularly interesting at first glance.

However, the performance of these devices often leaves something to be desired. And when it comes to functionality, too often you have to compromise. Ideally, the modern waffle iron is characterized by these functions:

Dough collecting channel

There is always a “hint” of fat in the dough. In the course of heating, this melts and becomes liquid. In the case of cheap appliances, this liquid leaks out all too often on the sides or even gets into the area of the power connection, which incidentally is associated with a not inconsiderable danger.

Modern waffle irons, on the other hand, are equipped with a dough collecting channel that can be placed either over a plate or a bowl so that the liquid can drip into it. Or the dough collecting channel ends in its own container, which you only have to empty after the baking process.

Signal Lights

Many waffle irons have signal lights in three colors. The first lamp indicates that the warm-up phase is still in progress, the lighting up of the second lamp indicates that the baking temperature has now been reached.

As soon as the third lamp starts to glow, you know that the waffle is now ready and can be removed. That makes it easier and you don’t have to regularly check how far the baking progress has already progressed.

Non-stick coating

To prevent the dough from sticking to the iron plates, it helps to coat them with a little fat. Modern waffle irons have long been equipped with a non-stick coating, which, however, can vary in robustness depending on the product. The more valuable it is, the higher its durability. Sometimes this even makes brushing with calorie-containing fat superfluous.

Temperature control

With conventional waffle irons, the temperature is always the same when baking waffles or other delicacies. Depending on the wattage of the device, this does not always reach the right temperature, so experience has shown that the waffles remain soft with waffle irons with a low wattage.

However, if a waffle iron has a temperature control, the heat can be set higher and the baking process can be shortened.

Double baking surface

With normal waffle irons you can make a waffle with every baking process, whereas with waffle irons with two baking surfaces it is possible to produce two pieces at the same time. So you save time and can enjoy earlier.

Removable iron plates

Ideally, modern waffle irons have removable waffle irons. This is particularly important with a view to the care and cleaning of such a device. While classic waffle irons are usually only laboriously removed from dough residues and fat with a cloth, which incidentally also get stuck in the depressions and on the edges, removable iron plates can simply be removed and cleaned in the dishwasher if necessary. That saves time and certainly also nerves.

Different uses

With a view to your conception, you can not only bake waffles with a waffle iron, but modern devices with additional features are even able to produce muffins, donuts or New Year’s croissants, etc.

The fact that the so-called waffle is also enjoying increasing popularity in this country also contributes to the fact that the functional waffle irons are particularly popular.

How are waffle makers tested?

With a waffle iron, it’s not just about the quality, but also the range of services, usability and the price-performance ratio. In our institute, we have made it our task to inspect waffle irons and put them through their paces. The focus is on different factors, both in terms of theoretical tests and in terms of practical investigations.

On the one hand, we receive the products to be tested directly from (online) retailers, on the other hand, the manufacturers provide us with their waffle irons for testing. Of course, absolute anonymity is guaranteed in every respect.

First of all, our test experts create a questionnaire, which is based, among other things, on what special features are currently available on the market with a view to waffle irons. Current technical refinements as well as empirical values and “must-haves” also play an essential role.

Among other things, there is talk of taking into account the aspects that a waffle iron generally “can” or must do. After the compilation of the detailed questionnaire, the practical investigations follow. In this regard, the delivery conditions or the nature of the outer packaging, the operating instructions, the plastic content, etc. in the cardboard boxes come into play.

In addition, we evaluate the services of the manufacturer, the professional competence, the modalities with regard to the processing of returns and above all the quality and the handling of the waffle irons. The visual quality, the conceptual design of the control elements, the functionality, the respective features as well as the cleaning and maintenance aspects and also the price factors are just as important.

It is important to our test team that our product reports provide consumers with comprehensive information on the respective desired product. This means that every analysis is carried out with the highest level of professionalism and at the same time a maximum of objectivity is guaranteed.

Product reports thus represent a well-founded basis for decision-making with which the consumer can actually make something. In view of the fact that some of the waffle irons are also provided directly by the manufacturers, it is worth mentioning that a maximum of objectivity and anonymity is guaranteed right from the start.

Not only the retailers themselves benefit from this, but the consumers in particular. In the event that our testers identify potential for improvement in the products made available to us, this is an opportunity for the providers to rework this and then bring the revised and improved products to the market.

In this respect, customers ultimately benefit from waffle irons that have been carefully and retrospectively revised and improved in their functionality by our professionals.

Finally, it is not worth knowing that each individual product report is free of cumbersome technical terms and foreign words, but that all information is consumer-oriented and easy to understand.

The facts are always to the point without being permeated by technical jargon or incomprehensible terminology. Another decisive advantage from which the “average consumer” and “Lieschen Müller” benefit to a great extent.

What are the alternatives to a waffle maker?

What should you do if you feel like having delicious golden brown waffles again, but no waffle iron is available? Under these conditions, helpful alternatives are required. However, a waffle iron would not be so much in demand for nothing if there were actually equivalent compromise solutions.

In this respect, it makes sense to focus on classic methods and, for example, pull out the “good, old” pan. Without a good batter, nothing works when it comes to making waffles. However, because this is evenly distributed in the depressions of the iron plates in a waffle iron and, among other things, this is what gives this special taste, special craftsmanship is required if you want to prepare the waffles in a pan.

That is definitely a workable solution. However, experience has shown that discerning connoisseurs have to do without this popular “fluffy” taste, as virtually no pan is equipped with the corresponding recesses.

Quick Tips for Better Waffle Quality

Ideally, these should be coated with a little fat before heating. Certainly most recipes for waffles, New Year’s croissants, etc. always contain a little butter or margarine, so that a certain fat potential is distributed each time a new portion of dough is applied.

Nevertheless, experience shows that it does not hurt to help out a little and apply a few brushstrokes of butter, margarine or oil to both surfaces. Incidentally, what many users do not always consider is the fact that there are some types of fat or oil that cannot be exposed to excessively high temperatures.

It is therefore important to check these conditions and to check the maximum temperature of the waffle iron beforehand. Well-stocked specialist retailers are sure to have numerous waffle irons ready, which do not necessarily require greasing the iron plates before use. For this reason, it is all the more important to study the operating instructions included in the scope of delivery before using it for the first time.

Other factors that make it easier to use a waffle iron are the quality of the device and the nature of the technology as well as the surface design of the iron plates. This value alone can make a significant contribution to making the application less complicated and preventing the waffle batter from sticking. Therefore, it is definitely worth spending one or two additional dollars to prevent the waffle quality from burning or being reduced in advance.

As much as the quality of a waffle iron is relevant to the exquisite quality of the waffles, it is also important that you apply the right amount of batter to the iron plates. If the amount is too small, the waffle will be pitted and it can even burn. The edges of the waffle also often become hard as a result and lose their taste and appearance. The situation is similar if too much liquid dough is placed on the plate.

Although the top and bottom of the waffle bake with it, the inside of the food remains soft, sticky and tasteless. Not to mention the fact that it simply feels uncomfortable when thick pieces of dough spread in your mouth when you eat the waffle that is too thick.

Last but not least, you should make sure that the dough is by no means too runny. Because then you can generally assume that the waffle will bake quickly or that the mass will be unsightly, dark and bitter.

If you take these tricks into account when using the waffle iron, which usually literally “passes into flesh and blood” after the first use, you can be sure that the following waffle baking projects will succeed.
